All I Want For Christmas

Saturday 26th July 2014
Pre-Season Friendly
Glencruitten 1
Kick off 1.45pm
Oban Saints AFC 3 - 2 Greenock High School Former Pupils AFC
Referee Mr John Scott

Saints line up:-

Graham Douglas (GK), David MacPhee, Alex Craik, Marc MacCallum (Captain), Roy McLuckie, Scott Maitland, Paul Kerr, Donald Campbell, Craig MacEwan, Lewis Cameron, Allan Mackay.
Substitutes: Stuart Alexander, David Beaton, Martin Bonar, Shaun MacIver, Dean Smith

Saints and old friends Greenock HSFP served up a very competitive and highly entertaining pre-season friendly on the rugby pitch at Glencruitten last Saturday afternoon. Thankfully the searing heat of the previous few days was replaced with something far more typical of the Oban summer i.e.heavy rain. The cooler temperature and slick playing surface helped the players keep up a tempo more reminiscent of a cup tie than a friendly much to the enjoyment of the Saints faithful who had turned out in reasonable numbers for this eagerly anticipated annual match.
The High started brightly and tested Saints keeper Graham Douglas twice in the opening two minutes. Saints were forced into an early change when central midfield linch-pin Paul Kerr sustained a nasty facial injury. It may only be July but unfortunately for Paul he already knows what he wants for Christmas! Acting Management duo David Buchanan and Peter MacCallum introduced substitute Stuart Alexander to the right of midfield switching Roy McLuckie to the central role vacated by Paul Kerr. Saints soon weathered the early Greenock pressure and began to fashion a few chances of their own. A quickly taken short corner with Craig MacEwan gave Donald Campbell a scoring opportunity but his right foot drive from the corner of the six yard box flew inches past the junction of post and bar. Allan Mackay had the ball in the Greenock net calmly slotting home when one on one with the keeper but was adjudged by referee John Scott to be offside. Saints took the lead in the 23rd minute when Craig MacEwan's low cross from the left wing picked out Stuart Alexander's run into the box. The youngster's perfectly placed finish into the bottom corner of the net gave Greenock keeper William Swan no chance. Donald Campbell's afternoon came to a disappointingly premature end in the 26th minute when he received a kick to the outside of his left foot and was replaced by Martin Bonar. Donald's injury was later diagnosed as a broken metatarsal which will mean a spell in plaster and a lengthy lay off for the inspirational Saints midfielder. Winning In The Rain wishes both "Wee Fella Don" and "The Real Paul Kerr" a speedy recovery.  This substitution brought about another reshuffle with Craig MacEwan moving infield and Martin Bonar taking up the wide left berth. Saints continued to press forward and should have increased their lead after 35 minutes when Martin Bonar headed over from close range after a Stuart Alexander cross from the right wing. Martin fared better two minutes later when his late run into the box was picked out by Lewis Cameron allowing him to squeeze home from inside the six yard box. The High were disappointed to go two down after having started so well and quickly forced Saints back after the restart. Graham Douglas in the Saints goal was again forced into action and with the Greenock pressure building was eventually beaten on the stroke of half-time by a well struck Gary Loughran strike from the edge of the box.
Saints opened the second half strongly with the pace and trickery of Lewis Cameron giving the High defence plenty to think about. A surging run and cross from Lewis in the inside right channel only narrowly failed to pick out substitute Dean Smith at the near post on the 50 minute mark. Scott Maitland then made a surging run into the Greenock box but his shot went wide of the keeper's left hand post. Saints made more changes as the half progressed withdrawing first half substitutes Stuart Alexander and Martin Bonar and replacing them with David Beaton and Shaun MacIver. Saints appealed for a penalty on the hour mark when the High's Gary Loughran appeared to bring down Dean Smith just inside the box but referee John Scott was unimpressed. Dean then came close to restoring a two goal margin for Saints but his glacing header from six yards again finished wide of the goalkeepers left hand post. Greenock also made a number of good opportunities with Gary Loughran in particular creating problems for the right hand side of the Saints defence. The High equalised in the 75th minute when Alan McCabe took advantage of some uncharacteristically sloppy Saints defending to poke the ball home from close range following another attack down the Saints right. Despite this being a friendly there was no question of the sides settling for a draw and the high intensity of the play continued as both sets of players probed for a winner. Saints came close again in the 82nd minute when Craig MacEwan's perfectly timed goal bound near post header from a Lewis Cameron corner was cleared off the line by the Greenock defender guarding the right hand post. The winner came with just 5 minutes remaining when David Beaton made good progress up the right wing before delivering an inch perfect right foot cross onto the forehead of Allan Mackay. The header from last season's top scorer looped over the fingertips of goalkeeper William Swan and crept under the crossbar to extend Saints run of victories in this fixture to four in a row. Referee John Scott who had handled the match in his usual unfussy style brought an excellent workout for both sets of players to a close without any further scoring.

The build up to the new season continues for Saints this coming Saturday with the visit of the High's fellow Central Scottish Amateur Football League club Ashvale Victoria.

Holidays In The Sun

Saturday 26th July 2014
Friendly
Oban Saints AFC v Greenock High School Former Pupils AFC
Glencruitten 1 (Rugby Pitch)
Kick Off 2pm
Referee Mr John Scott

Following another hugely enjoyable D&K Cup friendly tournament Saints play their first pre-season 90 minutes on Saturday with the visit of Greenock High School Former Pupils. Saints will be without several regulars who are making the most of the holiday period before the league season starts on 16th August. The absence of some of the regular starters will give Manager Iain Jackson a good opportunity to run the rule over the club's new signings who all made very impressive debuts in the D & K Cup tournament. Hopefully the new boys will continue to shine in the coming weeks giving the Manager a few selection headaches for the new season.

Saturdays visitors are of course no strangers to Oban having crossed swords with Saints many times since Saints first joined the Scottish Amateur Football League in 1976. At that time GHSFP had already been members of the SAFL for 52 years and had clinched four Division One titles, three West of Scotland Cups and two Scottish Amateur Cups in what were halcyon days for the club. Saints and the "High" have enjoyed a healthy rivalry over the years with many closely contested matches where away wins have been at a premium. You have to go back to the High's centenary year of 2007 for their last victories in Oban when a 1 - 0 win on 6th May helped them clinch the SAFL Premier Division title in what was to prove their last piece of silverware as SAFL members. This victory for the High was closely followed by a 3 - 0 win at the start of the 2007/08 season however Saints regained the upper hand in the remaining competitive fixtures in Oban before the High departed for pastures new.

Greenock HSFP Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions 2006 - 07

GHSFP left the SAFL in 2011 for a new challenge in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League where they progressed to the Premier Division after clinching the Division 1A title and winning the 1st Division section winners trophy in 2013. Last season saw the High finish 6th in their first season in the CSAFL Premier division with 31 points from 20 games 15 points behind champions Bannockburn.

Since leaving the SAFL the High have continued their rivalry with Saints with an annual pre-season friendly which is now in it's 4th year. All three previous encounters have been won by Saints:-

Saturday 6th August 2011 Oban Saints AFC 4 - 2 Greenock HSFP AFC
Saturday 4th August 2012 Oban Saints AFC 2 - 0 Greenock HSFP AFC
Saturday 3rd August 2013 Oban Saints AFC 2 - 1 Greenock HSFP AFC

On the score sheet for Saints in last year's match were Brian Mackay and Donald Campbell

The High have a 100% record in their three matches so far this pre-season. A comfortable victory over a Legends XI was followed up by an impressive away win over Ayrshire Cup holders and Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Premier Division runners-up Clark Drive. On Thursday night GHSFP faced Thorn Athletic at the McMaster Sports Centre in Johnstone again coming out on top. Greenock's free scoring forward line will provide a stiff test for Saints notoriously obdurate defence in what promises to be a good workout for both sets of players. The High will renew more old Scottish Amateur Football League acquaintances when they open their Central Scottish Amateur League campaign with matches against Aikenhead Thistle and Postal United on 9th and 13th August respectively.

Greenock HSFP pre-season results so far:-

Saturday 5th July Greenock HSFP AFC 5 - 1 Greenock HSFP Legends
Saturday 19th July Clark Drive AFC 2 - 4 Greenock HSFP AFC
Thursday 24th July Thorn Athletic AFC 2 - 4 Greenock HSFP AFC

Greenock HSFP Captain and Scottish Amateur International Jamie Bradley

Other news:-

Mattie bows out a double winner

Former Saints striker Mattie Rippon has signed for Fort William of the Highland League. Mattie left Saints at the end of last season when he relocated to Inverness. With Fort William already having a number of players based in Inverness they were quick to seize the opportunity to snap up Mattie's signature. Winning In The Rain wishes Mattie all the best with his new club.

D&K Cup 2014 Round-Up

Match Officials:-
Donnie Brooks, Jim Pearson, John Mackie, Stuart McLearie, Peter McCallum, Archie Mitchell, Jimmy Litster, Tim Woodcock and Thomas Sharp

Saints run of good fortune with the notoriously unpredictable Oban summer weather finally ran out on Saturday when the D&K Cup tournament was played amidst heavy showers rather than the bright sunshine enjoyed in the last few years. Despite the weather the large crowd of spectators was treated to another spectacle of top class football synonymous with this tournament over the years.

Dundee United under 20's and defending champions Hamilton Accies got proceedings underway on pitch1 at Mossfield with Accies immediately showing they were in no mood to relinquish their crown. Goals from Ziggy Gordon, Jesus Garcia Tena and Crawford gave the SPFL Premiership new boys a convincing 3 - 0 win to set them up nicely for what was to prove a successful day's work.

Over on pitch 2 at the Rugby Club St Johnstone under 20's took on three times champions Alloa Athletic where first half strikes from Greig Spence and Ben Gordon were enough for the SPFL Championship side to ease out their development league opponents by two goals to one.

Oban Saints AFC D&K Cup 2014 Squad

Back row left to right: Iain Jackson (Manager), Myles McAuley, David MacPhee, Craig MacEwan, Allan Mackay, Daniel Cassells, Thomas MacCulloch, Donald Campbell, Jamie Graham, Martin Bonar and Peter MacCallum (Coach)
Front row left to right: Shaun MacIver, Paul Kerr, Dean Smith, Dougal Graham, Lewis Cameron, David Beaton, Scott Maitland and Marc MacCallum (Captain)

Saints first match of the tournament came against Alloa Athletic on pitch 1. Saints boasting a number of new faces amongst their ranks took to the perfectly prepared Mossfied surface resplendent in their new navy blue kit kindly supplied by kit sponsor D&K Lafferty Contractors. In a goalless first half the Saints defence of Marc MacCallum, Jamie Graham and debutant David MacPhee coped well with the Alloa attack but still had goal keeper Daniel Cassells to thank for a couple of fine saves. At the other end Saints best effort of the half came from a rasping Dean Smith strike which just cleared the cross bar. Dean is making a welcome return to the Saints fold after a spell with Oban Athletic. Saints continued to give a good account of themselves in the second half but slack marking at set pieces was to prove their undoing. Alloa trialist Liam Buchanan found himself unmarked in the Saints box to power a right wing corner past a helpless Daniel Cassells to give the Wasps the lead. Saints immediately struck back through guest player David Beaton who rounded off an excellent Saints move to level the scores. Alloa took the lead for a second time with a goal almost idedntical to the first. From a needlessly given away corner kick Alloa player of the year Daryll Meggat found himself unmarked in the box to power a downward header into the Saints net. The scoring ended there and Saints left the field disappointed that an otherwise excellent performance had been undone by two lapses in concentration.

On pitch 2 a successfully converted Jason Scotland penalty kick was all that separated Hamilton Accies and St Johnstone under 20's.

St Johnstone then took the short trip across the burn for the battle of the Saints on pitch 1. Oban Saints opened the scoring early in the first half through debutant Martin Bonar. The tall defender made an excellent run into the Perth Saints box to head home a left wing cross much to the delight of the home fans in the large crowd. Saints held onto the lead until the half time interval but a Jason Kerr strike soon after the re-start brought St Johnstone level. Both sides pushed for a winner but anything that got past the well marshalled defences was comfartably dealt with by the respective goal keepers. Referee Tim Woodcock brought the match to an end with no further scoring.

Shaun MacIver is foiled at the near post by the St Johnstone keeper

On pitch 2 Alloa Athletic maintained their 100% record with a 1 - 0 over Dundee United under 20's thanks to a second half Greig Spence goal.

Saints then moved over to pitch 2 to face defending champions Hamilton Accies. Saints took an early lead through another of their debutants Scott Maitland. Scott made a perfectly timed run into the box to get on the end of an excellent left wing run and cut back by Craig MacEwan. Accies replied immediately through Craig Watson before Saints again took the lead this time from a glancing Craig MacEwan header from a Lewis Cameron cross. Unfortunately for Saints this provoked Accies to raise their game a notch or two to which Saints had no answer. An unsavable 30 yard rocket into the top corner by Darren Lyon brought Accies level. This was quickly followed by a Mikael Antoine Curier penalty to give Accies a 3 - 2 half time lead after Craig MacEwan had clipped the heels of an Accies player in the box. Accies added a further three second half goals with an Andy Ryan goal sandwiched by two unstoppable Grant Gillespie 25 yard free kicks. Referee Archie Mitchell from Campbeltown put Saints out of their misery with the score standing at 6 - 2 to Accies.

On pitch 1 Dundee United won the battle of the under 20's defeating St Johnstone by three goals to nil. On the score sheet for United were Ola Adeyemo, Brad Smith and Chris McLaughlin with a stunning 35 yard strike.

Saints final match of the competition was on pitch 2 against Dundee United under 20's. Saints created several good chances in a goalless first half without managing to find a way past the Arabs keeper. In the second half 140 minutes of football was beginning to take it's toll on the small Saints squad and it was United who were finishing the stronger of the two sides. The Saints defence of Jamie Graham, David MacPhee and Dougal Graham coped well with the United attack but keeper Thomas MacCulloch who had made an impressive debut for the Saints was finally beaten in the dying minutes by Jordan Moore. Moore who had been out of action for some time was delighted to mark his return to the United line-up with what was to prove the winning goal. The Saints contingent then retired to the Rugby Clubhouse for a few well earned refreshments and to reflect on an excellent afternoon's work against quality opposition.

The final match on pitch 1 proved to be the title decider the tournament organisers has hoped for when holders Hamilton Accies and three time winners Alloa Athletic went head to head for the coveted trophy. The sides were level on nine points each going into the match but Accies' superior goal difference gave them the edge. A share of the points would therefore be sufficient for Accies to retain the trophy but only a win would do for Alloa. The Wasps took a first half lead through Ben Gordon before a Mikael Antoine Curier goal restored parity just before half time. Alloa pushed hard for a winner in the second half but the Accies defence held firm for a final score of 1 - 1 handing the title to Accies on goal difference.

21 Today

The Oban Saints pre-season tournament comes of age on Saturday when the eagerly anticipated annual event is played for the 21st time. The enduring popularity of the event is exhibited in the top class opposition which the tournament continues to attract. All four of this years visitors are regular attenders and can boast 37 appearances between them. The late withdrawal of Heart of Midlothian has reduced the number of competitors to five but the format remains the same with the teams playing each other once. Despite the competition being principally designed to aid in the building of pre-season fitness it is keenly contested and victory is greeted with as much celebration as any other trophy win. The tournament has been blessed with some excellent weather over the years but unfortunately tomorrow's forecast is for rain. Whatever the weather the anticipated large crowd is sure to be entertained to a feast of quality football.
Saints were delighted last year when shirt sponsor D&K Lafferty Contractors agreed to sponsor the event following the withdrawal of Keyline Builders who until then had sponsored the event in every year since it's inception. D&K Lafferty are fantastic supporters of local sport and it's great to see them getting the exposure that sponsorship of this prestigious tournament can offer.

Accies make their 12th consecutive appearance at the tournament and they do so for the first time as holders of the trophy. Accies already have one pre-season match under their belt where they enjoyed a 1 - 0 victoty over Heart of Midlothian at New Douglas Park. Accies will bring a squad of at least 22 players which will be split in two with each team playing two matches. After narrowly missing out on the SPFL Championship title to Dundee last season, Accies secured promotion to the Premiership with a thrilling 4 - 3 penalty shoot out win over Hibernian at Easter Road.

Making their 9th consecutive appearance three time winners Alloa Athletic are bidding to become the tournament's most successful competitors with a record breaking fourth win. The Wasps have already played two matches this pre-season recording home victories over Montrose and East Stirling 1 - 0 and 2 - 1 respectively. The Wasps finished 8th in last season's SPFL Championship, level on points with Cowdenbeath but with a marginally better goal difference which spared them the agony of a relegation play off against Dunfermline Athletic whom they had defeated the previous season to secure promotion to the Championship. It's an early start tomorrow morning for the tournament regular Wasps fans with their supporter's bus leaving Alloa at 6.30am. I'm willing to bet that they'll be even more bleary eyed when the bus leaves for the return trip at 12 noon on Sunday!

Dundee United have an excellent record of three wins from their ten previous appearances. Carrying United's hopes for the honour of being the first club to record four victories this year are the under 20's. United's under 20's finished in 12th place out of 16 in last season's highly competitive SPFL under 20's league.

Unable to take part last year Saints are delighted to welcome back the Perth Saints for their 9th tournament appearance. Like Dundee United St Johnstone will be represented by their under 20's who will be desperate to record a first tournament success for the Sottish Cup holders. St Johnstone under 20's finished 11th in last season's SPFL under 20's league one point ahead of Dundee United.

Saints enjoyed an excellent 2013 - 14 season losing only two matches, a Scottish Amateur Cup 7th Round defeat to eventual losing semi-finalists Eastfield and a West of Scotland Cup 4th round penalty shoot-out defeat to eventual losing finalists Giffnock North. An undefeated league campaign, culminating in a last day winner takes all victory over closest rivals Haldane United, saw Saints crowned Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions to add to the Jimmy Marshall Trophy secured against Inverclyde just three days earlier.

The famous "one nil to The Arsenal" chant is alleged to have been born at half time in the Parcs de Princes where Arsenal held a slender 1 - 0 advantage over Paris Saint Germain in the 1994 UEFA Cup Winners Cup semi-final first leg. Legend has it that Go West was played by the stadium DJ during the half time interval to which the assembled Gooners sang along using their own words and a classic football chant was born.
