Saints warmed up for their crunch Scottish Amateur Cup first round tie against Finnart with a hard fought league win against against old rivals Inverclyde at Glencruitten last Saturday. Manager Alex Craik named ten of the starting eleven that had let a two goal lead slip against Motherwell Thistle the previous week with Dene Cassells dropping to the bench in favour of Craig Campbell. With competition for starting places hotting up the Gaffer was able to include a further six substitutes and Paul Carmichael, Daniel Croarkin, Matthew Kelly, Scott Maitland, Fraser MacFarlane and Dean Smith joined Dene on the bench. Sticking with their favoured 4-3-3 formation Saints lined up with Thomas McCulloch in goal; a back four of David McArthur, Craig Campbell, Marc Maccallum and Jamie Graham; a midfield of Myles McAuley, Paul Kerr and Willie Gemmell; and a front three of Ross Maitland, Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan.

Inverclyde's new black and red strip was too similar to Saints navy blue ensemble forcing Saints Secretary David Buchanan to dig into the kit bag for the 2014 double winning kit of white shirts, black shorts and white socks. The visitors kicked off attacking the Mossfield end with only four of the team that lost 4 - 1 on their last visit to Glencruitten remaining. The much changed 'Clyde line-up, including five of the new signings that has taken the Greenock club to the quarter final stage of the Scottish Amateur Football League Centenary Cup, were quick to settle in an even opening five minutes. Saints were first to threaten in the fifth minute when Donald Campbell sent a cross from the right into the 'Clyde box looking for Craig MacEwan. 'Clyde skipper Greg Wilson got to the ball first but sliced his attempted clearance behind for the first corner kick of the match. Ross Maitland's delivery from the left was forced clear but only as far as Willie Gemmell whose return ball into the danger area won a second corner. Ross Maitland picked out the head of Donald Campbell on the corner of the six yard box with Donald's downward header eventually breaking to David McArthur at the opposite end of the six yard line from where the Saints right full back fired a shot narrowly wide of the keeper's left hand post. The Saints defence was carved open in the seventh minute with new signing from Dunoon Amateurs Guy Finnegan rounding off an excellent move from the left with a thumping finish past a hopelessly exposed Thomas McCulloch to give the visitors the lead. A tenth minute foul on Myles McAuley by Steven Morris just inside the 'Clyde half gave Saints the chance to combine the dead ball accuracy of Willie Gemmell with the aerial threat of Craig Campbell. The pair duly delivered unfortunately there was no Saints player on hand to capitalise of Craig's well won knock down and 'Clyde keeper Michael Ptolomey was able to gather comfortably. From Ptolomey's clearance 'Clyde threatened again on the left wing with goalscorer Finnegan drawing a good tackle from Marc Maccallum to halt the move on the edge of the Saints box. Play returned swiftly to the other end with Craig MacEwan jinking along the eighteen yard line and laying the ball off to Paul Kerr whose well struck shot from twenty yards was deflected behind for another Saints corner. Ross Maitland again provided a good delivery from the right however the 'Clyde defence stood firm to head the danger clear.

Saints equalised in the seventeenth minute from a well worked move on the left. Willie Gemmell threaded a pass through the inside left channel which Craig MacEwan allowed to run past him for the overlapping Jamie Graham. The visitors appealed for offside against Craig MacEwan but Referee John Scott correctly allowed play to continue. Jamie drove on towards the bye-line and sent a low cut back to Willie Gemmell who fired a first time shot into the bottom corner past Michael Ptolomey's left hand. Inverclyde were again left screaming in vain for an offside decision just one minute later when Willie Gemmell's raking pass found Ross Maitland wide on the right and in behind the 'Clyde back four. Ross measured a cross into the box for Donald Campbell who had to take a touch to control the ball which allowed Michael Ptolomey to narrow the angle and make a good save. Saints continued their good spell forcing Ptolomey into action once again in the twentieth minute however Ross Maitland's low shot from eighteen yards lacked power and provided the 'Clyde keeper with a simple task to scoop up the ball. Jamie Graham's powerful running from left back almost unlocked the 'Clyde defence again in the twenty third minute with Ptolomey making a vital interception to cut out Jamie's cross before it could reach Myles McAuley at the back post. The pressure eventually told for Saints on the half hour mark when Donald Campbell pounced on a moment of hesitation in the Inverclyde back four. Donald robbed Fraser Gunn ten yards inside the 'Clyde half and sent Ross Maitland off on a run up the right wing leaving 'Clyde left back Robbie McAlpine trailing in his wake. Ross produced another excellent delivery picking out Craig MacEwan at the back post who beat Christopher McGivern and Greg Wilson turning the ball into the net to give Saints the lead. Saints maintained the upper hand until the interval without seriously threatening the visitor's goal until the forty fifth minute when Willie Gemmell flashed a drive wide of the upright after Michael Ptolomey had punched clear a Ross Maitland corner from the left.

Slack passing ensured a poor start to the second half for Saints with only a forty sixth minute cross along the six yard line from Paul Kerr posing any kind of threat to the visitor's goal. At the other end Inverclyde were looking dangerous with Jamie Graham relieved to see Marc Maccallum coming across to cover at the expense of a corner after a slip almost let in Darren McGregor for a shot on goal. The Saints skipper made a spectacular diving headed clearance from the corner from the 'Clyde right but the respite was only brief and the visitors deservedly drew level in the fifty seventh minute. A cheaply conceded free kick on the 'Clyde right gave Robbie McAlpine a chance to put the ball into the danger area which he gladly accepted. The left full back whipped an excellent delivery into the box meeting Greg Wilson's well timed run past a static Saints defence to head the ball into the net for the equaliser. This was just the wake up call Saints needed and they struck back almost immediately from the restart. Craig MacEwan and Donald Campbell linked up well on the edge of the 'Clyde box with Craig's quick pass sending Donald in behind the defence and through on goal. Keeper Ptolomey once again got his angles spot on coming out at his near post to close Donald down and turn the ball behind for a corner. Donald also got on the end of Ross Maitland's corner from the right with his downward header causing all sorts of confusion in the 'Clyde defence which David McArthur capitalised on to sneak the loose ball in at the back post to restore Saint's lead. The goal kick started a much improved spell for Saints where Craig MacEwan was unlucky to see a lob beat the 'Clyde keeper but bounce off the top of the crossbar and Ross Maitland's follow up overhead kick land safely in the Michael Ptolomey's arms. Jamie Graham's afternoon as a makeshift left back came to an end just after the hour mark when he was replaced by Scottish Amateur International left back Scott Maitland. Scott was immediately into the action making a strong run up the left wing before fizzing a dangerous cross into the box which Craig MacEwan was unfortunately unable to divert on target sending a difficult chance wide of Michael Ptolomey's right hand post. Guy Finnegan posted a reminder of the danger he poses skinning Marc Maccallum on the left wing in the sixty eighth minute and cutting inside to get a good shot away which Craig Campbell defelected behind for a corner kick. Thomas McCulloch calmed the nerves on the touchline by gathering the corner kick from the left cleanly but put hearts back in mouths just sixty seconds later. The big keeper scuffed a seemingly straight forward clearance off the shins of Guy Finnegan before recovering in the nick of time to pluck the ball from the toes of the 'Clyde danger man much to the relief of the home support. At the other end Paul Kerr popped up in an unlikely position climbing well at the back post to head a Ross Maitland cross wide under pressure from Christopher McGivern. The Saints goal continued to lead a charmed life with Thomas McCulloch pulling off a fine save at his near post to deny Finnegan a second goal after more good work on the left and Darren McGregor firing a shot wide of McCulloch's right hand post after Craig Campbell had been left man for man with McGregor. Manager Alex Craik made his second change of the afternoon replacing Ross Maitland with Dean Smith at the same time dropping Donald Campbell a little deeper to form a four man midfield. Initially the change did little to change the pattern of play with Saints still wasteful in possession leaving the visitors hopeful of snatching an equaliser. Relief however was close at hand with a well worked move from Saints own box leading to the killer goal in the eighty sixth minute. Thomas McCulloch threw the ball out to David McArthur with the Saints right back able to carry the ball forward unchallenged to the half way line. David found Craig MacEwan who in turn laid the ball off to Donald Campbell for a defence splitting pass for Dean Smith to spin in behind the 'Clyde defence only for Fraser Gunn to clip his heels before he could get a shot away. Referee John Scott immediately pointed to the spot from where Donald Campbell sent Michael Ptolomey the wrong way with an emphatic finish. The Gaffer made one final change for the closing minutes bringing on Daniel Croarkin to replace Myles McAuley in the middle of the park. Thankfully there was no repeat of the previous week's dramatic late collapse and Saints comfortably saw out the remainder of the match before Mr Scott's final whistle brought an entertaining afternoon to a close.

Next up for Saints is an extremely tough Scottish Amateur Cup first round tie away at former Scottish Amateur Football League rivals Finnart who currently lead Caledonian League Division 1B with maximum points from their opening two matches.

Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division
Oban Saints AFC v Inverclyde AFC
Glencruitten 2
Mossfield Avenue
Oban
Argyll

Kick Off 2pm
Referee Mr John Scott

In match three of their assault on this season's Premier Division title Saints welcome long time Scottish Amateur Football League rivals Inverclyde to Glencruitten. "The 'Clyde's" last visit to Oban was just three months ago on Sunday 22nd May and resulted in a 4 - 1 win for Saints setting them up nicely for the Jimmy Marshall Trophy final against St Joseph's FP five days later but leaving 'Clyde thankful that their superior goal difference would keep them out of reach of fellow relegation battlers Alba Thistle. Having narrowly escaped an immediate return to Premier Division One with last season's seventh place finish the 'Clyde will now look to consolidate their position in the Premier Division. However, this season's campaign for the 'Clyde got off to an inauspicious start last Saturday with a 4 - 2 home defeat at the hands of bogey team Shawlands FP their fifth consecutive defeat at the hands of the Warriors. The 'Clyde have fared infinitely better in their Centenary Cup group section matches where convincing wins against Broomhill, Dunoon and East End United have secured a quarter final tie against either Motherwell Thistle or East Kilbride YMCA.

Saints hold the upper hand in their home fixtures against the Inverclyde winning five of the last six however they can take nothing for granted against a side which has rattled in twenty goals in their last four matches. Saints are also in excellent goal scoring form with thirteen goals from their two games which bodes well for an entertaining encounter between the two old foes.

Team News

Scottish Amateur international Scott Maitland should be available for selection following his return from holiday which caused him to miss last weekend's trip to Motherwell. Skipper Marc Maccallum continues to suffer from toothache but should be ready to play through the pain barrier once again. Definitely missing are long term injury victims Martin Bonar and Dougal Graham who remain several weeks away from a return to action. On a brighter note Paul Carmichael came through this midweek's training session and will soon be pressing for a place in the squad.

In Other News

Scott Maitland has been included in National Select Manager Bruce McNaught's twenty nine man squad for this Sunday's trial match at Lesser Hampden. Scott will hope to convince Mr McNaught and his coaching staff that he is worthy of a place in the squad to face England, also at Lesser Hampden on Sunday 4th September. Scott's good showing in the UEFA Regions Cup last season should stand him in good stead however, with competition for places in the squad likely to be keen, Scott will have to maintain the high performance levels which brought him to the National Manager's attention in the first place.

Saints conceded two sloppy goals inside a minute right at the end of last Saturday's first ever league encounter with Motherwell Thistle to gift their hosts an unlikely share of the points. Second half goals from Craig MacEwan and Donald Campbell added to Willie Gemmell's first half opener had the visitors coasting towards victory until the late rally from the Premier Division new boys stunned their more experienced guests.

Manager Alex Craik stuck with ten of the starting eleven from the previous week's demolition of Campbeltown Pupils with the only change being Jamie Graham coming in at left back to replace holidaymaker Scott Maitland. Keeping their places on the bench were Daniel Croarkin,Fraser MacFarlane and Dean Smith who were joined by the returning Craig Campbell and Matthew Kelly.

Saints skipper Marc Maccallum won the toss and elected to play into the stiff breeze and driving rain in the first half. The hosts kicked off on the excellent Daisy Park Community Centre 3G surface and were first to settle forcing a corner kick on the left in the first minute which Thomas McCulloch held well in the tricky condtions. As was the case against Campbeltown Pupils Saints were slow to get started with the hosts having the better of the early exchanges. In the thirteenth minute Saints injected a little bit of urgency with Marc Maccallum making a good interception on the half way line to feed the advancing David McArthur. David measured a good ball up the right wing for Ross Maitland who flashed a cross into the box which Thistle keeper Paul Aiton couldn't hold. Fortunately for the Jags keeper his spilled catch fell behind Donald Campbell where he was able to gather at the second attempt. The Jags front pairing of Ombeni Ruhanduka and Mark Begg were showing good movement and giving the Saints back four plenty to think about. Begg could possibly have done better in the fifteenth minute when he peeled away from Marc Maccallum to meet a William McMaster cross from the right but could only cushion his volley from fifteen yards over the crossbar. David McArthur and Ross Maitland then combined well again on the right this time with David getting in a tempting cross which only just evaded Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan on the six yard line.

Saints took the lead in the eighteenth minute when Ross Maitland finished off a good move through the middle holding the ball up well on the eighteen yard line and rolling a short pass into the path of Willie Gemmell who fired a shot into the bottom corner from twenty four yards. Four minutes later Paul Kerr tried his luck from a similar distance and was unlucky to see his powerful shot deflected over the crossbar with the keeper well beaten. Ross Maitland sent in another good delivery from the corner kick which Jags skipper Stuart Hunter headed clear however Saints kept up the pressure with Jamie Graham picking out Willie Gemmell with a raking diagonal ball from the left. Willie advanced up the right wing from where he spotted Paul Aiton off his goal line and successfully lobbed the goalkeeper only to see his effort hit the top of the crossbar and bounce behind for a goal kick. Saints looked to be getting into their stride now with Donald Campbell heading inches wide after beating Stuart Hunter to a Craig MacEwan cross from the left and Ross Maitland seeing another dangerous cross from the right turned behind for a corner. At the other end Antony Mitchell came in from the left wing to carve out a twenty ninth minute chance catching out David McArthur and Marc Maccallum before shooting narrowly wide of Thomas McCulloch's right hand post. Two minutes later Dene Cassells found himself caught in two minds on the halfway line eventually standing on the ball and being robbed of possession by William McMaster. The Jags midfielder drove at the heart of the retreating Saints defence but with four players in support decided to go for goal himself. Thomas McCulloch advanced to narrow the angle and made an excellent save smothering McMaster's shot from eighteen yards. Ross Maitland kept up the excellent form he showed against Campbeltown Pupils linking up well with David McArthur and Myles McAuley before sending in another tempting cross which David Knight defended well nipping in ahead of Craig MacEwan to clear the danger. Jamie Graham picked up a silly booking for dissent in the forty second minute after he had been harshly adjudged to have fouled Ombeni Ruhanduka on the half way line. Thistle took the free kick quickly working it forward to first half substitute David Forrester in the inside left channel who snatched at the chance slicing his left foot shot well wide of target. In the final minute of the half Donald Campbell blazed a Ross Maitland cutback over the crossbar from eighteen yards after a Willie Gemmell pass had set Ross off on another run on the right wing.

Impossible as it may sound, Saints made an even slower start to the second half than the first with the hosts forcing two corners in quick succession the first of which being won almost immediately from Saints kick off. Saints defended the corners and, after some vocal encouragement from the touchline, forced their own first corner of the second half in the fiftieth minute. Craig MacEwan flicked on a long Thomas McCulloch clearance and harried Jags left back Scott Watson into knocking the ball behind. Ross Maitland's outswinger from the right was knocked down by Dene Cassells to Donald Campbell who saw his first time shot blocked on the goal line by Scott Watson. Craig MacEwan was first to the loose ball but sent his effort high over the crossbar. Paul Kerr joined Jamie Graham in Referee Alan Smith's notebook for a foul inside the centre circle in the fifty fourth minute. On the hour mark a foul on Ross Maitland two yards from the byeline on the left brought an audacious free kick effort from Willie Gemmell. From this extremely narrow angle Willie decided against a cross and curled a shot narrowly wide of the junction of post and bar. That was Willie's last meaningful contribution and he was replaced five minutes later by the fresh legs of Matthew Kelly. The hosts drew level in the sixty seventh minute when Ombeni Ruhanduka peeled off the shoulder of Marc Maccallum and tucked a neat finish beyond Thomas McCulloch at his near post. Referee Smith harshly booked Marc Maccallum for an accidental handball in the seventieth minute having only moments earlier not produced a card for an identical infringement by a Jags player. Mr Smith did however take the name of David Knight in the seventy second minute for pulling back Craig MacEwan in the centre circle. With fifteen minutes remaining Dean Smith entered the fray to replace Ross Maitland and had an almost instant impact on proceedings. Dean's perseverance forced a corner kick on the right starting a period of pressure leading to Saints second goal in the seventy seventh minute. Matthew Kelly's corner was forced behind by the Jags defence giving young Matthew another chance to put the ball into the danger area. Matthew's second corner was glanced on by Dene Cassells and broke to Paul Kerr on the edge of the D. Paul's shot on the half volley was blocked with David McArthur latching onto the rebound and firing a dangerous low ball across the box which took the slightest of deflections off a Jags defender for another corner kick. Craig MacEwan made a near post run and, with the outside of his right boot, flicked Dean Smith's cross into the net finding the gap between keeper Paul Aiton and full back Scott Watson guarding the back post. Before the restart Mr Smith took the name of the Jags keeper who had continued his protests about the award of the corner too long for the Referee's liking. Saints eagerness to bag what they hoped would be a killer third goal left them short at the back with the dangerous Ombeni Ruhanduka getting in behind Marc Maccallum but firing over from a tight angle. Donald Campbell's clipped ball into the box found Craig MacEwan in a good position but, under pressure from Stuart Hunter, Craig was unable to get the ball properly under control and the chance was lost. An eighty fifth minute lob from Dean Smith almost caught Paul Aiton off his line but the Jags keeper managed to get finger tips to Dean's effort to deflect it over the crossbar. Dean was in the thick of the action again just one minute later when he was hauled down in the box by Stuart Hunter earning Saints a penalty kick and the Thistle Captain's central defensive partner James Gibbons a yellow card for his protestations. Donald Campbell emphatically hammered home the spot kick to give Saints a two goal advantage going into the last four minutes of the match and that really should have been game over. Unfortunately for Saints the hosts had other ideas and refused to accept defeat. Ombeni Ruhanduka edged the hosts ahead in the bookings stakes for a foul on Marc Maccallum and during the stoppage Saints Manager replaced Myles McAuley and Craig MacEwan with Daniel Croarkin and Fraser MacFarlane. The young Saints substitutes had no time to settle as Thistle pushed forward looking for a way back into the game which they duly found in the ninetieth minute. Thistle substitute Christopher McEwan got a run on Jamie Graham beating the stand-in Saints left back on the outside and sending a low cross into the box which Saints failed to deal with allowing Ombeni Ruhanduka to lash a right foot shot past Thomas McCulloch. Saints were rocking now and switched off again immediately from the restart again allowing Christopher McEwan too much space this time to measure a diagonal ball to the left flank looking for Antony Mitchell. The Thistle man appeared suspiciously offside however Mr Smith, under scrutiny from a Scottish Football Association Referee's Assessor, waved play on allowing Mitchell to send a cross into the box where a pack of Thistle players were now waiting. Christopher McEwan continued his run into the box to join the throng and got the vital touch past the helpless Thomas McCulloch sending the home bench into raptures of joy and having the polar opposite effect on the Saints bench. There was barely any time left on the watch and Mr Smith blew for full time almost immediately after the restart leaving Saints to reflect ruefully on two dropped points. Full credit to hosts Motherwell Thistle who kept plugging away right to the end for which they deserved their share of the points.

Next up for Saints in the Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division is a home match against old rivals Inverclyde.

Saints take their first away trip of the new season this Saturday when they make a first ever visit to Daisy Park Community Centre to face newly promoted Motherwell Thistle in a Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division clash. The Premier Division new boys secured promotion to the Scottish Amateur Football League top flight with a third placed finish in Premier Division One when Finnart's defection to the Caledonian League opened up an additional promotion spot behind Champions Drumchapel Amateurs Colts and runners up Ferguslie Star. The Jags recovered from a shaky start to life in Premier Division One where they lost four of their first seven matches before embarking upon a terrific run losing just one more match to clinch a third successive promotion on the last day of the season with a 2 - 1 win over Lochgilphead Red Star at the Ropework.

Previous Encounter

Although they have never previously met on league business Saints and Thistle did come face to face last season in the Jimmy Marshall Trophy semi-final at Millburn Park, Alexandria where Saints won an entertaining encounter by three goals to nil. Ross Maitland's fourth minute opener was added to in the second half by Willie Gemmell and Dene Cassells to see Saints through to their third final in four seasons where they would eventually wrestle the trophy from holders St Joseph's FP.

Saints began their Premier Division campaign last Saturday with an emphatic 10 - 0 Argyll Derby win over Campbeltown Pupils while Thistle were on Centenary Cup duty against Strathaven Dynamo of Premier Division 2B. The Jags raced to the top of group section five with a thumping 10 - 1 win over their old rivals which they followed up on Wednesday night with a 5 - 2 over Premier Division One East Kilbride Rolls Royce. The two home wins put Thistle top of the section ahead of away ties against Busby and East Kilbride YMCA and leaves them well positioned to seal a place in the knockout stages of the competition.

Saints Team News

Martin Bonar, Paul Carmichael and Dougal Graham remain sidelined through injury however, with the exception of those three, Manager Alex Craik will have something close to a full squad available for selection for what promises to be a tricky opening away fixture.
