Oban Saints returned to Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division action last Saturday when they welcomed 2015-16 Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs to a cold but sunny Glencruitten. Extended runs in the both the Scottish and West of Scotland Amateur Cups had restricted Saints to just six Premier Division fixtures so far with this being being their first league outing for almost four months.

The return of six players afforded Manager Alex Craik the rare luxury of leaving himself out of the match day squad which lined up with Graham Douglas in goal behind a back four of Jamie Graham, Steven MacLeod, Marc Maccallum and Scott Maitland. Keith Millar anchored a midfield diamond flanked by Paul Carmichael and Willie Gemmell with Skipper Donald Campbell at it's point. Up front were Lewis Cameron and Craig MacEwan. On an extremely youthful bench were Ruaridh Horne, Connor Howe, Daniel MacCuish, Shaun MacIver and Craig MacMillan.

The visitors arrived missing five regulars including Skipper Gavin Thomson and goalkeeper Ross Meldrum forcing midfielder Jamie Innes between the posts where he acquitted himself very well.

East Kilbride kicked off attacking the Mossfield end where their top marksman Johnny Diack forced an early corner kick after a sprint on the right with Scott Maitland. Paul Carmichael headed clear Reiss Tallon's delivery before Scott Maitland's tight hamstring forced him to call it a day after just ninety seconds.

Maitland's departure forced a reshuffle in the Saints ranks with Jamie Graham moving to left back, Steven MacLeod to right back, Paul Carmichael dropping back to partner Marc Maccallum in the centre of defence with Carmichael's midfield berth being taken up by substitute Shaun MacIver.

MacIver's first involvement was to send over a deep cross from the right looking for Craig MacEwan in the fourth minute which Chris Philbin intercepted before launching a swift counter attack up the right wing. Jamie Graham, making just his second start of the season, matched Johnny Diack stride for stride eventually forcing the Kilby striker to run the ball out for a goal kick.

East Kilbride central defender Craig Scott did equally well moments later when he matched the run of Lewis Cameron to snuff out the danger after Craig MacEwan and Donald Campbell had combined to send Cameron racing through the middle.

Jamie Graham showed his willingness to get forward with an overlapping run on the left to fire over a cross from Willie Gemmell's through ball which unfortunately swung too close to stand-in keeper Jamie Innes.

The visitors were missing their dead ball expert Gavin Thomson so it was leading goal scorer Diack who assumed responsibility for an eighth minute free-kick on the corner of the Saints box. This came after a high line from the East Kilbride back four had caught Willie Gemmell offside just inside the Kilby half. Marc Maccallum headed Gary McDowal's long straight delivery out to  the edge of the box where a stretching Shaun MacIver caught Mathew Meechan on the edge of the box. Diack took aim for the top corner with Saints keeper Graham Douglas happy to see his effort fly wide of the junction of post and crossbar.

At the other end it was Saints turn to try and exploit a dead ball opportunity after Craig Scott had felled Lewis Cameron twenty eight yards out. Willie Gemmell succeeded in curling the ball up and over the East Kilbride wall but unfortunately also over the crossbar.

Reiss Tallon had another chance to swing over a corner kick from the right in the twelfth minute which Willie Gemmell headed out for a throw-in on the opposite flank. Marc Maccallum cleared spectacularly setting up Shaun MacIver for a counter attack and a cross from the right which Bob Thanda turned out for a throw-in. Willie Gemmell's throw from the left was partially cleared by the Kilby defence and as Saints tried to keep up the pressure Gemmell completed an unlikely double of being caught offside for the second time in four minutes.

Saints slow start to the match continued and only an uncharacteristically wayward finish from Johnny Diack spared Steven MacLeod's blushes after an equally rare mistake from the usually dependable Saints defender. MacLeod's under hit pass to Marc Maccallum in the nineteenth minute allowed Diack to intercept and race through for a shot from the left of the box which, from a good position, only succeeded in finding the side netting.

The compliment was returned at the other end two minutes later when Jamie Innes sent a clearance straight to the feet of Craig MacEwan. Innes however quickly redeemed his error backpedalling to his six yard line to reach up and pluck MacEwan's attempted lob from the corner of the eighteen yard box out of the air.

Saints opened the scoring in the twenty third minute after a good passing move on the left involving Willie Gemmell and Craig MacEwan fed Donald Campbell on the edge of the D. Campbell held the ball up well and laid off to Shaun MacIver who fired a low shot across Jamie Innes and into the bottom corner to give Saints the lead.

Two minutes later Willie Gemmell was presented with another opportunity to display his talents with the dead ball when Craig Scott sent Donald Campbell tumbling on the edge of the box. Gemmell curled the ball around the five man Kilby wall but was denied a third set-piece goal in two games when Jamie Innes dived to his left to make an excellent stop.

After taking the lead Saints strangely seemed to drop out off the game with the visitors enjoying a good ten minute spell. However, despite playing some good passing football, Kilby were restricted to shots from distance by the experienced Saints back four marshaled in typically dynamic and vocal style by the returning Marc Maccallum. Gary McDowal and Craig Mackie both failed to trouble Graham Douglas with efforts from distance which flew high over the crossbar.

Saints shook off their lethargy with a late flourish which saw Willie Gemmell crack a thunderous twenty yard shot off the crossbar. Donald Campbell picked out Craig MacEwan on the left who jinked into the box but was forced inside by Chris Philbin. MacEwan then rolled the ball back to Willie Gemmell on the edge of the box who beat Jamie Innes all ends up but was foiled by the frame of the goal.

A perfectly weighted Willie Gemmell ball through the inside left channel opened up the East Kibride defence for Craig MacEwan to race into the box only for Jamie Innes to come out and make a good block at his near post before Referee Matthew Dickinson blew for half-time.

Saints opened the second half brightly with Craig MacEwan winning a corner on the left inside the first minute. Jamie Innes clawed away Willie Gemmell's inswinger however the Kilby defence couldn't fully clear their lines and Donald Campbell dribbled his way into the box before getting the ball caught under his feet and being closed down on the six yard line by Mathew Meechan and Craig Scott.

Graham Douglas was forced into action for the first time in the forty seventh minute after Marc Maccallum had made a good interception to cut out a Reiss Tallon cross from the right. East Kilbride took the resulting throw-in quickly and Tallon whipped in another cross this time picking out former Charlton Athletic man Bob Thanda on the penalty spot, who for once, got the better of Keith Millar to power a header on target which Graham Douglas held well springing to his left.

Douglas was tested again in the fifty first minute when Donald Campbell brought down Johnny Diack twenty eight yards out. Jett Docherty's effort was however straight at Graham Douglas who gathered comfortably.

Jamie Innes continued his good showing between the posts for East Kilbride clawing away another inswinging Willie Gemmell corner kick at his near post after Chris Philbin had cut off a promising run on the Saints left from Shaun MacIver.

After his quiet start to the match Graham Douglas was back in action again in the fifty eighth minute making a fine save at his near post from Johnny Diack who had wriggled his way past Jamie Graham on the Kilby right before firing in a low shot.

The visitors kept the pressure on and had a loud appeal for a penalty kick turned down by the Referee when Paul Carmichael dispossessed Johnny Diack just inside the left corner of the eighteen yard box. Mr Dickinson waved play on and Carmichael strode out of defence to send Lewis Cameron away on the right where he won a corner kick off Mathew Meechan.

From the corner flag Cameron picked out strike partner Craig MacEwan who shook free of Craig Scott to glance a header six inches wide of the keeper's right hand post.

East Kilbride made a double change on the hour mark withdrawing two of their more experienced players in Craig Scott and Johnny Diack and replacing them with two more of the club's crop of promising youngsters Zach Roche and Karl Mauchin.

Saints Skipper Donald Campbell's deft touch took him away from opposite number Gary McDowal in the sixty fourth minute however his finish from the eighteen yard line curled agonisingly wide of the keepers left hand post.

With Saints struggling to make an impression on the second half Manager Alex Craik made his first change of the afternoon in the sixty seventh minute withdrawing Lewis Cameron and introducing Connor Howe for another appearance from the substitutes bench. Howe took up position on the right of the midfield diamond with Shaun MacIver moving forward to join Craig MacEwan.

Tempers briefly threatened to boil over after a mistimed tackle by Steven MacLeod on Reiss Tallon on the touchline. Mr Dickinson quickly restored order and restarted the game with a free-kick for East Kilbride but not before taking the name of MacLeod and also Marc Maccallum and Stuart McMillan for their part in the heated debate that ensued. Keith Millar, who put in a good shift on his return from a hamstring injury which had kept him out for four weeks, headed clear Mathew Meechan's free-kick from the left.

Saints were the grateful recipients of a major let-off in the seventy second minute when Stuart McMillan scooped over from three yards after Reiss Tallon had headed a Chris Philbin corner from the right back across the face of goal.

Saints rubbed salt into the Kilby wound by doubling their advantage straight from the restart. Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan linked up well to send Shaun MacIver racing in behind the Kilby defence for another well placed low finish across Jamie Innes and into the bottom corner for his fifth goal in three appearances since returning from suspension.

The two goal cushion allowed Saints Gaffer Alex Craik to give young Ruaridh Horne a run out at right back when he came on to replace Jamie Graham. The switch brought a third change of position for Steven MacLeod who showed his versatility by taking up the left back berth. Horne's introduction gave Saints a much needed injection of pace with the youngster, who has waited patiently for an opportunity to prove his worth, making several good runs forward in the closing fifteen minutes.

Saints put the final outcome beyond any doubt in the seventy seventh minute when double goalscorer Shaun MacIver turned provider with a delicious cross from the left to pick out Craig MacEwan's back post run. MacEwan's cushioned volley from a tight angle was parried onto the goal-line by Jamie Innes but, agonisingly for the keeper, the spin on the ball took it behind the line before he could scoop it away. Referee Dickinson was up with the action and well placed to award the goal and give Manager Alex Craik the chance to make another change. Daniel MacCuish replaced Willie Gemmell on the left of midfield where the youngster would continue his excellent form since making his debut against Greenock High School Former Pupils in the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup at the beginning of December.

The visitors kept plugging away and were denied a consolation goal with ten minutes remaining when Graham Douglas dived full length to his left to turn a Reiss Tallon net bound shot round the post for a corner kick. East Kilbride took the corner kick quickly with Graham Douglas being forced into another save at his near post.

A driving eighty third minute run from Ruaridh Horne after Marc Maccallum had headed out a free-kick from the halfway line had the Kilby defence scrambling to get back. Saints however failed to capitalise when, from Horne's pass, Craig MacEwan sent his cross looking for Shaun MacIver too close to the goalkeeper.

Saints Gaffer Alex Craik made his fifth and final change in the eighty fourth minute replacing Steven MacLeod, who had filled every position along the back four, with another youngster Craig MacMillan.

Graham Douglas made one final save to deny Stuart McMillan in the eighty fifth minute before Saints passed up three presentable chances to add to the scoring in the closing stages.

Good work on the right from Donald Campbell set up Craig MacEwan twelve yards from goal who tried for a second time to lob keeper Jamie Innes this time sending his effort over the crossbar.

Donald Campbell stung the palms of Jamie Innes who proved to be an able deputy in goal pushing a decent effort from Donald Campbell wide in the eighty eighth minute.

Shaun MacIver's hat-trick opportunity came courtesy of another driving run from Ruaridh Horne however, instead of shooting across the keeper as before, MacIver aimed for the near post where he succeeded only in finding the side netting.

Horne's running won a ninety second minute free-kick when he was sent tumbling by Mathew Meechan. Saints Skipper Donald Campbell bizarrely picked up a yellow card for not taking the free-kick when the wall was only seven yards away. Campbell appealed for the wall to retreat the required distance only to find his way into the Referee's note book for his troubles. Predictably Campbell's free-kick failed to clear the wall before Mr Dickinson who, that incident apart, had a good game blew for full time.

The win keeps Saints in eighth place but moves them onto the nine point mark and brings them within touching distance of Kilby and East Kilbride Rolls Royce who go head to head in a crunch local derby next Saturday.

Saints, meanwhile, resume their Scottish Amateur Cup campaign when they welcome Yoker United of the Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League to Glencruitten where they will do battle for a place in the quarter finals.

This Saturday Oban Saints play their first league match for almost four months when they welcome 2015-16 Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs to Glencruitten in the Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division. Saints extended involvement in the 'major' cup competitions has seen them manage only six league fixtures so far this season with a paltry return of just six points leaving them languishing in eighth place. East Kilbride's twelve points from eleven games is only marginally better  and, with any realistic chance of mounting a challenge at the top of the Premier Division table long gone, both sides find themselves in the unfamiliar position of taking a close interest in results affecting the bottom half of the table.

When the sides met in East Kilbride last August a very much down to the bare bones Saints secured a hard fought 2 - 1 victory to bag their first points of the season after defeats to Hillington and Motherwell Thistle. Central defender Craig Scott beat Thomas McCulloch with a screamer from twenty eight yards in the twelfth minute to undo a good start from Saints and put the home side in front. The lead however lasted only three minutes before Skipper for the day Craig MacEwan latched onto a Willie Gemmell through ball to lob the advancing Ross Meldrum and restore parity. The Skipper then capitalised on a mix-up in the Kilby defence from a Daniel Croarkin long ball to loop a header over Ross Meldrum and give Saints the lead after thirty minutes. Saints manfully withstood some sustained Kilby pressure in the second half and remained a threat on break before successfully negotiating a goalless second half to secure all three points.

Since then Kilby have notched home and away victories over Hillington and a home win against Inverclyde to add to the earlier home draw. Kilby's most notable results of the league campaign so far have been their home draws against East Kilbride Rolls Royce in a typically fiercely contested local derby, and their 21st of October 3 - 3 home draw with Alba Thistle which saw the Paisley men drop their only points so far of what is shaping up to be a sensational season.

Centenary Cup

In Centenary Group Section South Four 3 - 1 wins against Neilston and East Kilbride YMC wasn't enough to see through Kilby through to the quarter finals. A 1 - 1 draw with Premier Division Two Castlemilk left the door open for the 'Milk to pip Kilby on goal difference which they duly did with a 3 - 1 home win against Neilston.

Jimmy Marshall Trophy

Like Saints who went out on penalties to Lochgilphead Red Star, Kilby also saw their bid for glory in the Jimmy Marshall Trophy fall at the first hurdle with a surprise 6 - 2 defeat at Premier Division Two title chasers Millbeg.

Scottish Amateur Cup

A comfortable first round away win at Greater Glasgow Premier League Division Two strugglers Colquhoun United eased East Kilbride into what they hoped would be an extended Scottish Amateur Cup run. This was followed in round two up by another away win this time at Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Two title hopefuls Castlemilk. A third consecutive away draw brought Kilby's dreams of a Hampden final appearance to a swift end when a devastating four goal first half salvo from Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Premier League Kilbride Thistle sent them tumbling out at the third round stage.

West of Scotland Amateur Cup

Following a first round bye the West of Scotland Cup campaign began with a home tie and a thumping 8 - 0 win over Stirling and District Division 1A Condorrat. A second trip of the season to Ayrshire followed in round three this time with a far more satisfying outcome in the shape of a 3 - 0 win at Ayrshire Amateur Football Association First Division promotion chasers Troon Dundonald. Round four's excellent 2 - 1 home win over four time cup winners Bannockburn of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division followed by a 6 - 0 home league win over Hillington took Kilby into the Christmas and New Year break in buoyant mood. Unfortunately for Kilby the promising cup run came to an end in the very next round with a 4 - 0 reverse at 2012-13 cup winners and current Scottish Amateur Cup holders Colville Park.

Team News

The visitors have one or two availability issues and, as a consequence, have requested a slightly earlier kick-off time of 1.30 pm which Saints were happy to accommodate. Saints Manager Alex Craik will continue his quest for a settled starting line-up but will almost certainly keep up his unwanted record of naming a different eleven for every match with the nineteenth different permutation of his available resources. In charge of what should be an entertaining spectacle for the Glencruitten faithful is Mr Matthew Dickinson from the Isle of Mull

Saints Come Up Short

West of Scotland Amateur Cup
6th Round
Shortlees 4 - 2 Oban Saints
Grange Leisure Centre
Beech Avenue

Kick Off 1.30pm
Referee Mr Anthony McCann

An eighty ninth minute wonder goal from amateur football sensation Keir Knapp ended Oban Saints West of Scotland Cup run at the Grange Academy, Kilmarnock last Saturday. Despite a spirited performance from a depleted Saints side, including two perfectly placed set-piece strikes from Willie Gemmell, it was the very impressive 2016 cup winners Shortlees who prevailed at the end of the ninety minutes to advance to the quarter final stage.

Saints Manager Alex Craik's pre-match plans were thrown into disarray with the late withdrawal of five of the squad which had put eight past Woodhall Thistle in the previous round requiring starting roles for locum goalkeeper Thomas McCulloch and the Gaffer himself.

Saints lined up with Thomas McCulloch in goal behind a back four of Matthew Kelly, Steven MacLeod, Alex Craik and Scott Maitland. Willie Gemmell anchored the midfield flanked by Captain Donald Campbell and Daniel MacCuish with Lewis Cameron, on his first start since returning to the club, taking up an unaccustomed position at the point of the diamond. Up front were leading goal scorer Craig MacEwan and last week's hat-trick hero Shaun MacIver. On a very young and inexperienced bench were Ruaridh Horne, Connor Howe and Craig MacMillan.

Skipper Donald Campbell won the toss of Referee Anthony McCann's coin and elected to play into the stiff breeze and low sun in the first half. Saints kicked off attacking the school end on the excellent all-weather surface but it was the hosts who were first to settle with Owen Quigley hooking over a Keir Knapp cross from the left inside the first sixty seconds.

Saints were punished for their slow start when a towering header from Richard Mullen put Shortlees ahead after just five minutes. The big central defender climbed high above Willie Gemmell and Alex Craik to power a Keir Knapp corner from the left past the stranded Thomas McCulloch.

The deadly right foot of Willie Gemmell brought Saints level in the tenth minute after Referee McCann had penalised Richard Mullen for a tackle from behind on Craig MacEwan. Five of Gemmell's six previous goals this season had come in cup competitions and the midfield stalwart continued his knack of chipping in with vital strikes when he a curled a low shot from nineteen yards around the five man Shortlees wall and into the bottom corner past a static Garry Murdoch.

Cheered on by the large and vociferous home support, Shortlees came roaring back and struck the frame of the goal just two minutes later. John Muir turned inside Scott Maitland on the Shortlees right and sent a dipping left foot effort, which Thomas McCulloch appeared to have covered, crashing off the top of the crossbar.

At the other end a Keiran Paterson foul on Lewis Cameron earned Saints a fifteenth minute free-kick on the left which Willie Gemmell rolled short to Scott Maitland unfortunately the Saints left-back was unable to force his way through the ruck of players on the edge of the Shortlees box and was soon crowded out.

Shortlees Captain Keir Knapp picked up the first yellow card of a fiercely contested match for a sixteenth minute foul on Saints right-back Matthew Kelly who gave a good first half account of himself against one of the top talents in the amateur game.

Opening goalscorer Richard Mullen joined his Captain in the Referee's notebook in the twenty fifth minute for a foul on Donald Campbell on the halfway line. From Willie Gemmell's free-kick rolled into Campbell's feet the Skipper fed Shaun MacIver for a strike on goal which Garry Murdoch in the Shortlees goal held at the second attempt.

Sixty seconds later the hosts responded with a Keir Knapp cross from the left hooked on target by Joseph Gold which Thomas McCulloch gathered at his near post.

A thirty ninth minute free-kick won by Donald Campbell was tossed in from the right by Willie Gemmell but predictably headed out by towering Shortlees central defender Gordon Minor. Lurking just outside the box was Lewis Cameron whose touch and hit from twenty four yards flew wide of Garry Murdoch's left hand post.

As the clock ticked down towards the half-time interval Saints Captain Donald Campbell was penalised for a foul on opposite number Keir Knapp whose free-kick from the left hit the top of the Saints wall and was tipped over his crossbar by Thomas McCulloch.

The hosts kept the pressure on with three successive corner kicks which Saints defended well before Referee McCann brought the first half to an end with honours even.

The opening exchanges of the second half followed a similar pattern to the first with the home side, who had switched Keir Knapp and John Muir to the opposite flanks, making the better start. Another change from the hosts saw the withdrawal of Richard Mullen to be replaced by Gregg Calder.

In Saints first serious attack of the second forty five, Lewis Cameron won a free-kick on the left thirty yards from goal. Willie Gemmell's dipping ball into the six yard box looking for the run of Shaun MacIver was well held by Garry Murdoch who immediately launched a counter attack up the left wing. John Muir raced away and sent in a low cross which the combined efforts of Matthew Kelly and Steven MacLeod sent spinning beyond the grasp of Thomas McCulloch and in off the far post to restore the host's advantage.

Cursing their luck Saints pressed forward in search of a second equaliser but found ricochets in the Shortlees penalty area not going their way either. Cutting in from the left Craig MacEwan saw his right foot shoot take a deflection which completely wrong footed Garry Murdoch but also took the ball wide of the keeper's right hand post. Lewis Cameron's in-swinger from the left was helped on it's way by Garry Murdoch under pressure from Shaun MacIver. Daniel MacCuish kept the ball alive and picked out MacIver fifteen yards out whose shot came off the outstretched left leg of double Scottish and West of Scotland Amateur Cup winner Jim Caldwell and spun agonisingly over the crossbar.

Before the corner kick could be taken Shortlees replaced the injured Douglas Robertson with Greig Rankin, another of eight survivors from Shortlees Scottish Amateur Cup quarter-final encounter with Saints at Glencruitten two years ago. Daniel MacCuish tried to pick out Willie Gemmell's near post run but Owen Quigley read the danger well to head clear.

Not for the first time in the match Thomas McCulloch showed excellent handling to pluck a sixty fifth minute corner kick off the head of giant central defender Gordon Minor.

Willie Gemmell had his name taken in the sixty sixth minute by Referee Tony McCann. The vastly experienced whistler, who handled the match well, brandished the yellow card in Gemmell's direction for a foul on Jim Caldwell on the halfway line.

Saints Gaffer Alex Craik made his only change with twenty two minutes remaining replacing seventeen year old Daniel MacCuish, who acquitted himself well in distinguished company, with another youngster Connor Howe.

A seventieth minute Craig MacEwan turn and hit from a Willie Gemmell pass flew wide of the junction of post and bar as Saints continued their quest to get back into the match.

Two minutes later Lewis Cameron got the better of Jim Caldwell wide on the right and fizzed a low cross towards the near post which was thumped clear by Gordon Minor. From the corner kick Cameron tried to pick out Connor Howe's run from deep but the Saints replacement got underneath the flight of the ball and the danger was cleared.

John Muir threatened again on the left in the seventy sixth minute but his tame shot was easily held at his near post by Thomas McCulloch. That proved to be Muir's last involvement and he was replaced by the fresh legs of Kristopher Chisolm.

After a good spell of Saints pressure Owen Quigley clattered into the back of Donald Campbell on the edge of the Shortlees box in the eightieth minute earning himself a caution from Referee McCann in the process. The free-kick, twenty two yards out and left of centre, was in perfect Willie Gemmell territory and the Saints dead ball expert didn't disappoint curling a delicious effort over the five man wall and into the postage stamp corner to restore parity.

From the restart the hosts won a free-kick on the left on the corner of the Saints box. Keir Knapp took aim for the far top corner but saw his effort well charged down by Donald Campbell.

The pressure from the home side was starting to build but the Saints defence with seasoned campaigners Alex Craik and Steven MacLeod at it's heart was coping well.

With five minutes remaining Thomas McCulloch made an excellent stop at his near post to deny Owen Quigley who had broken clear of Matthew Kelly on the left. From the resulting corner kick Thomas McCulloch again took charge of his six yard box to punch clear.

Saints however couldn't get out of their own half and Craig MacEwan picked up a yellow card for hauling down Keir Knapp as he threatened to burst into the Saints box from the right. Saints inexplicably switched off at the free-kick from level with the six yard line and allowed Owen Quigley a free header from three yards out which he placed into the unguarded net.

The deflated Saints set off in search of a third equalier to take the tie into extra-time but there was to be no way back and it was the hosts who finished the tie with a flourish in the eighty ninth minute.

If there was an element of good fortune about the Shortlees breakaway second goal there was absolutely no question of luck being involved for their fourth goal which was a piece of individual brilliance from Keir Knapp fit to win any game.

With Saints pressing hard for a life-line Keir Knapp picked the ball up midway inside his own half and raced away from the trailing Saints pack before rifling an unstoppable left foot shot across Thomas McCulloch and into the bottom corner.

There was to be no coming back from this hammer blow for Saints however they kept plugging away during the time added on by Mr McCann and Donald Campbell's perseverance on the left forced a ninety third minute corner kick. Willie Gemmell produced one last exhibit of his set-piece prowess looping his flag kick over the head of Owen Quigley at the back post and picking out Alex Craik on the corner of the six yard box. Unfortunatley the Gaffer was unable to convert a difficult chance and sliced his volley wide before Mr McCann pointed to the centre circle bringing an enthralling cup tie to an end.

Victors Shortlees will now face either UB United or Maryhill Black Star, both of the Strathclyde Saturday Morning League, in an away quarter final tie on Saturday 17th March.

Saints return to league business this Saturday when they welcome 2015 - 16 Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs to Glencruitten in the Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division.
