This Saturday at Glencruitten Oban Saints usher in the Chinese year of the rooster with just their fourth home match of the season so far and their first in any of the cup competitions. The visitors for Saturday's Scottish Amateur Cup fifth round tie are Westdyce of the Aberdeenshire Amateur Football Association Divison Two East who are making their first ever trip west in Scottish amateur football's most prestigious competition.

Founded in 2012 as a Sunday morning team Westdyce joined the Saturday afternoon ranks for the 2014 - 15 season where a second placed finish in Division Three behind Champions Sheddocksley was enough to secure an immediate promotion to Division Two East. Another impressive league campaign followed and only a shock 1 - 0 defeat to bottom club Continental in their penultimate fixture denied the Inverdee based club back to back promotions. Westdyce took out their frustration at the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a place in Division One East with a thumping 8 - 2 victory over Grammar FP's in the final of the Aberdeenshire Amateur Football Association Barclay Cook Cup to win the fledgling club's first ever piece of silverware.

Westdyce have continued their good form into the 2016 -17 season winning fourteen of their seventeen fixtures so far. After a 100% return from their opening five league fixtures, including a 2 - 1 defeat of their local rivals and current league leaders Bridge of Don, the Westdyce promotion push has been placed on hold in favour of pursuit of cup glory. Unfortunately their defence of the Barclay Cook Cup came unstuck at the semi-finals stage when a first defeat of the season to Sheddocksley brought to an end a ten match winning streak. This set back was followed up in their next fixture by a 6 - 1 thrashing from Division One East league leaders Cowie Thistle in the second round of the North of Scotland Amateur Cup. Westdyce have maintained steady progress in the other local cup competitions and will face neighbours Bridge of Don in the third round of the Dickie Trophy. The draw for the fourth round of the Aberdeen F.C. Trophy gives Westdyce an early opportunity to avenge their record equaling defeat at the hands of Cowie Thistle when the two sides were paired to meet on Westdyce territory at Inverdee.

Shaking off their back to back defeats Westdyce have rediscovered the winning habit to progress to the fifth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup for the first time in their short history and are one of just six Aberdeenshire Amateur Football Association clubs still in with a shout of grabbing the big prize. A first round bye was followed up by a second round regional section 2 -1 home win against Rattray's XI. Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League Division 1A Firhill United were sent back down the A90 on the wrong end of a 5 - 3 scoreline in round three before Westdyce entered the previously uncharted waters of the fourth round. Awaiting them was an away trip to Fife to face Strathmiglo United of the Kingdom Caledonian Amateur Football Association where a Ryan Fenby goal secured a 1 - 1 draw on 3rd December to set up a replay at Inverdee the following week. Back on home soil things didn't start well for Westdyce when injuries forced them to field their only two available substitutes after just twenty minutes. Despite this early impediment and being under the cosh from their more experienced visitors Westdyce took the lead in the twenty third minute when Michael Caldwell poked home a Robbie Duncan corner. A second yellow card for right full back Danny Blanchard after forty minutes left the home side facing an uphill struggle in the second half however the makeshift Westdyce side produced an heroic performance to keep the Strathmiglo attack at bay before Michael Caldwell made the tie safe with a second breakaway goal.

The fifth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup may be unexplored territory for the Saturday's visitors but it has far more of a familiar feel for the home side. Saints have maintained their interest in the nation's premier cup competition beyond the Christmas and New Year break in nine of the past twelve seasons including three quarter-finals and last season's semi-final appearance.

This season's road to Hampden began with an extremely tough first round away fixture against former Scottish Amateur Football League rivals Finnart now of the Caledonian League Division 1B. A Craig MacEwan strike after eighteen minutes gave Saints the lead at Glasgow Green which they comfortably held onto until the half time interval. The second half started badly for Saints when a cheaply conceded corner kick allowed Finnart dead ball expert Andrew Robertson to find the head of Kieren Molloy in the six yard box and bring the home side level. Saints re-established their midfield domination and regained the lead just after the hour when second half substitute Paul Carmichael cracked a powerful drive off the underside of the crossbar and over the goal line. The Saints defence repelled an aerial onslaught from Finnart before a successfully converted Donald Campbell penalty kick in the eighty third minute made the tie safe.

A second round no show from Glasgow and District Saturday Morning League Premier Division outfit Bishopton denied the Saints faithful a home match on 1st October but saw Saints comfortably through to the third round by virtue of a walkover.

The third round draw paired Saints with another recent Scottish Amateur Football League defector FC Clydebank now of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1A. A significantly less assured performance than against Finnart somehow still managed to produce an identical result at Thorn Park Bearsden on 5th November. Dean Smith gave a sluggish Saints side a thirty eighth minute lead which they managed to hold until the closing stages despite an uncharacteristically disjointed performance. The eightieth minute introduction of Fraser MacFarlane proved to be an inspired change by Manager Alex Craik as, within three minutes of joining the action, young Fraser pounced on a loose ball in the Bankies' box to double the Saints advantage. A frantic period then ensued with Ross Hollinsworth pulling one back for the home side from a well worked short corner routine before Willie Gemmell settled the nerves on the touchline with a perfectly struck free kick into the postage stamp corner to send Saints into the fourth round.

Saints made a rare journey east to face Salvasen of the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association Lothian West Division in their biggest test of the season so far. With Skipper Marc Maccallum calling off due to illness Paul Kerr took the armband and successfully lead his troops into the fifth round against the previously undefeated Edinburgh side. Saints were assured throughout dominating possession and looking solid at the back. Goals either side of the half time interval from Dean Smith and Ross Maitland saw Saints comfortably through to a much welcomed and eagerly anticipated home tie against Westdyce.

Team News

Saints returned to training on Wednesday evening with an enforced change to the normal routine due to Oban High School being closed for the holidays. After an hour of road work on the steep inclines around McCaig's Tower the boys repaired to Atlantis Leisure for some indoor football to blow away the cobwebs. With something approaching a full squad available for selection Manager Alex Craik faces some tough choices as he ponders his starting eleven for the biggest match of the season so far.

Referee

Saturday's match official is highly respected Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League whistler Kevin Nolan. Kevin's efforts last season were rewarded when he was appointed as Referee for the Hampden Park show piece Scottish Amateur Cup Final between Colville Park and Leven United. Kevin was also in charge for Saints narrow West of Scotland Cup exit against Colville Park at Glencruitten last February. Kevin will hope to avoid a repeat of last year's unfortunate collision with Ross Maitland and Colville's Thomas Airlie which saw him leave Oban with the unwelcome souvenir of two cracked ribs.

Oban Saints stop/start season continued last Saturday with the late cancellation of their Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy second round match against Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union. The early indications were that the grass park at Parklea had managed to withstand the heavy rain during the week however, with the Saints squad on the mini-bus and ready to depart, word came through from Port Glasgow that Inverclyde Council had declared the surface unfit for play leading to the tie being postponed for a second time.

West of Scotland Amateur Cup

Saints final match of 2016 is an away trip to the familiar surroundings of East Kilbride. Saints have made the journey to Scotland's first new town four times already this calendar year and have yet to taste defeat. Cup wins against East Kilbride Rolls Royce and East Kilbride FC Amateurs were followed up with a league win against the Rolly and a highly creditable draw for a severely depleted Saints side against eventual Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs.

Saints opponents for this Saturday's West of Scotland Amateur Cup fourth round tie are Central Scottish Amateur Football League high fliers, and old friends, East Kilbride. With only two defeats in eighteen competitive fixtures East Kilbride are in a rich vein of form which has them sitting currently in fourth place in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division as the league's only unbeaten team besides runaway leaders Colville Park. East Kilbride's recent league inactivity due to cup commitments has seen them overtaken by Harestanes and Cambusnethan Talbot in the league race, however four games in hand leave them well placed to mount a serious challenge  in what looks to be a fascinating battle for second place behind odds-on title favourites Colville Park.

East Kilbride showed their class to take the scalp of the seemingly invincible Colville Park in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Bunrigh Trophy third round before succumbing to their first defeat of the season in the semi-finals of the same competition against the impressive Southside of Division 1A. East Kilbride's only other reverse so far came last Saturday in the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup against another of Saints great friends Greenock High School Former Pupils. After a 1 - 1 draw in Greenock East Kilbride failed to capitalise on home advantage tumbling out of the cup after a goal in each half from the men from the tail o' the bank.

Saints and East Kilbride have a friendship going back many years with the South Lanarkshire boys regular pre-season visitors to Oban. Saints hold the upper hand in recent years fighting back from a 2 - 0  half time deficit to win 3 - 2 in 2015 before battling out a highly entertaining 0 - 0 draw in this year's July encounter. With a place in the fifth round of the West of Scotland Cup at stake friendships will be put aside for the afternoon where the tie must be decided. If the sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes extra time and penalty kicks will be required to decide who will progress.

Second Round Tie
Port Glasgow Old Boys Union AFC v Oban Saints AFC

This Saturday Saints begin their defence of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy secured at Millburn Park, Alexandria last May in an absorbing 2 - 1 final win over then holders St Joseph's FP. This season's campaign kicks off with an away tie against one of the stalwarts of the Scottish Amateur Football League Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union AFC. Port Glasgow OBU celebrated their 110th anniversary this year which is a fantastic achievement, particularly in the current climate of long established clubs having to fold. True to their motto, Port Glasgow OBU have remained Sure and Steadfast throughout their history and have a long and happy association with the Scottish Amateur Football League. OBU have admirably chosen not to follow the well worn path to other leagues taken by many long standing SAFL member clubs including close neighbours Greenock High School Former Pupils and Gourock Athletic, electing instead to stay with the Scottish Amateur Football League and battle on in search of that elusive promotion to the Premier Division.

OBU's last Scottish Amateur Football League honour was the 1996 - 97 Premier Division Two title and any hopes of adding this season's Premier Division 2A title to their list of honours are already fading fast after a faltering run of two draws and four defeats from their opening six matches which leaves them in eighth place trailing undefeated league leaders Rossvale Amateurs by fifteen points. Encouragingly for OBU their best performances of the season so far have come against the league leaders holding them to a 2 -2 draw at Bishopbriggs on the opening day of the league season and losing out by the odd goal in five at Parklea three weeks ago.

After a bright start in the Scottish Amateur Football League Centenary Cup group sections which saw them win three out four matches losing out only to Premier Division Goldenhill, OBU have unfortunately found the going in the major cup competitions to be extremely tough. A second round Scottish Amateur Cup home defeat to reigning Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs was quickly followed by an eleven goal hammering in the West of Scotland Amateur Cup at Kilbirnie of the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association First Division.

Saints and Port Glasgow OBU have met many times over the past forty or so years with the most recent encounters coming in the Jimmy Marshall Trophy. Saints came out on top in the 2007 quarter finals tie at Glencruitten before eventually finishing as runners-up to Pollock. Saints repeated the feat in the 2012 first round en-route to another cup final defeat this time at the hands of Hillington.

Awaiting the winner of Saturday's second round match is an away tie againt either Arkleston, Rosehill Star or Shawlands FP.

Kick Off 1pm
Referee Mr James Jamieson

Saints made a rare journey east to Edinburgh last Saturday where they successfully booked their place in the Scottish Amateur Cup fifth round draw. Manager Alex Craik's team selection plans received a set-back when ever presents Willie Gemmell and Marc Maccallum had to call off due to work commitments and illness respectively. However the omens were good when the Captain's armband was handed to Paul Kerr who has a 100% record as stand in skipper. Paul was joined in midfield by Brian Mackay and Paul Carmichael while Marc Maccallum's absence meant a start for Jamie Graham who himself was struggling to shake off the after effects of a recent bout of flu. Jamie lined up alongside Dene Cassells at the centre of the defence in front of goalkeeper Thomas McCulloch with Matthew Kelly and Scott Maitland filling the full back berths. Up front Dean Smith lead the line flanked by Ross Maitland and Craig MacEwan. The Saints bench was boosted by the return of long term injury victim Martin Bonar who joined David McArthur and Fraser MacFarlane. Dougal Graham made up the substitutes line-up however a calf injury sustained in training in training dictated that his inclusion was to cover dire emergencies only.

Hosts Salvesen were an unknown quantity for Saints however their current sixteen match winning streak marked them out as potentially very difficult opponents for last season's beaten semi-finalists. Home skipper Ryan Harding won the toss of Referee James Jamieson's coin and elected to attack the school end in the first half. Saints started brightly knocking the ball about crisply on the good 3G surface. Salvesen gave an early indication that they wouldn't allow Saints to have it all their own way with a serious of robust challenges which raised the temperature on the pitch and also on the sidelines. A heavy challenge by Salvesen right full back Greig Hogarth on Paul Kerr gave Saints a free kick in a dangerous position inside the second minute. Ross Maitland's lofted ball into the box was easily repelled by the Salvesen defence but only as far as Paul Kerr on the edge of the box who sent a shot crashing over the top of the home crossbar. Dean Smith was next to feel the weight of a Salvesen challenge when Dean Cunningham sent him sprawling with another meaty challenge. Once again Ross Maitland's free kick was cleared this time with Dean Smith sending the loose ball wide of David Livie's right hand post. Saints had a loud appeal for a penalty kick dismissed in the sixth minute. Brian Mackay threaded a pass into the box for Paul Carmichael to run onto. Pursued by Faron Gribben, Paul tried to take the ball round the considerable frame of David Livie and appeared to be taken down by the big keeper but Referee Jamieson was unmoved by the Saints appeals and awarded a goal kick. Salvesen continued to dish out the heavy challenges with Dean Smith in particular coming in for some rough treatment. Mr Jamieson's patience with the hosts finally ran out in the eleventh minute when Dean Cunningham's fourth foul was met with the game's first yellow card. Despite having the upper hand Saints were finding scoring opportunities hard to come by with a Dean Smith header wide of the post from a Ross Maitland cross being the best effort of the opening fifteen minutes. This was followed up in the eighteenth minute by a Smith snap shot from the edge of the box being deflected wide for a corner kick. Ross Maitland's out-swinger from the right was met at the back post by Paul Carmichael whose powerful header flashed wide of the post. Salvesen's main out ball was to go long to the head of towering centre forward Matthew Duncan however Saints central defenders Dene Cassells and Jamie Graham were able to keep the big man reasonably quiet. Jamie Graham made a rare foray forward in the twenty seventh minute and had a shot from twenty four yards deflected wide for another corner kick from the right. Manager Alex Craik instructed a change of taker with Scott Maitland's in-swinger being headed out to Ross Maitland whose volley from twenty two yards dipped just over the crossbar. Saints kept the pressure on from David Livie's goal kick when Brian Mackay sent Dean Smith through one-on-one with the keeper. Dean took the ball round Livie but struck the base of the post with his attempt on goal. The loose ball came back to Dean who rolled the ball back to Paul Carmichael who also failed to find the net seeing his effort well saved by Livie. In a quieter spell Brian Mackay had a shot from twenty four yards comfortably held by Salvesen keeper Livie before Saints finally broke the deadlock in the forty third minute. Brian Mackay once again provided the through ball for Dean Smith who successfully rounded the keeper only to see his goal bound effort stopped on the line by Faron Gribben. Dean however kept his composure to gather the loose ball taking it away from the sprawling keeper and slotting into the empty net to give Saints a deserved lead. Dean almost doubled his tally on the stroke of half time hooking a Ross Maitland cross from the right wing back across the keeper but narrowly wide of the post. Before play could restart Referee Jamieson issued the second yellow card of the afternoon to Jamie Butler for a late heavy challenge on Matthew Kelly in the build-up. The half time interval arrived with Saints good value for their slender lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first forty five with Saints doing most of the pressing but failing to capitalise fully on the chances created. Ross Maitland somehow managed to miss an open goal from twenty five yards in the fiftieth minute after Craig MacEwan and Paul Carmichael had combined well through the middle leaving the goalkeeper stranded well off his line. However Ross redeemed himself three minutes later with a sublime finish to double his side's advantage. Ross won a throw-in on the left level with the six yard line from where Craig MacEwan and Brian Mackay worked the ball into the box. Craig shaped to shoot but cut the ball back to Ross on the edge of the D who clipped an excellent effort into the top corner giving David Livie no chance. With a two goal advantage Saints continued to knock the ball about confidently keeping their cool in the face yet more robust challenges from the home side. Greig Hogarth was fortunate not to see yellow or worse after crashing into Paul Carmichael in the fifty fifth minute. Salvesen then introduced Lothian and Edinburgh Select man Michael Yuill wide on the right for the final half hour and immediately began to look more of a threat in the final third. A Salvesen free kick thirty yards from goal in the fifty seventh minute led to a lightning quick Saints counter attack which should have put the tie beyond any doubt. Paul Kerr lofted the ball up to Dean Smith on the half-way line who beat Jamie Butler in the air to knock the down into the path of Ross Maitland. Ross took off up the right wing and squared to Paul Carmichael wide open in the middle who failed to get the pass under control with the ball bouncing up and hitting his hand and the home side breathing a huge sigh of relief as the Referee blew for hand ball. David Livie made a smart save low down to his right in the sixty second minute to deny Craig MacEwan before Dean Smith had a goal bound effort deflected behind for a corner kick two minutes later. The good build up play continued with Paul Kerr and Craig MacEwan combining well to set up Brian Mackay on the left in the sixty eighth minute. Brian raced into the box but opted for power over placement sending his left foot shot over the junction of post and crossbar. The Salvesen keeper was however forced into action with twenty minutes remaining on the clock diving well to his left to turn away a Ross Maitland free kick curled around the defensive wall from nineteen yards. The hosts had their only clear sight of goal in the seventy second minute when a rare lapse in concentration from Jamie Graham allowed Michael Yuill to cut in from the right and run in behind him. Chased all the way by Scott Maitland, Yuill got his shot away but was foiled by Thomas McCulloch when the Saints keeper stuck out his size twelve left boot to turn the ball behind for a corner kick. With fifteen minutes remaining Saints Gaffer Alex Craik made a double substitution replacing Paul Carmichael and Dean Smith with David McArthur and Fraser MacFarlane. The changes seemed to interrupt the flow for Saints with less being created going forward however they remained solid at the back throughout. Jamie Butler and Michael Yuill linked up in the eighty fourth minute with Yuill almost finding a way through being halted just outside the box by a last ditch challenge from Jamie Graham at the expense of a free kick. The free kick from slightly left of centre was high and wide posing no threat to Thomas McCulloch's cherished clean sheet. Manager Alex Craik made one final change with five minutes remaining introducing Martin Bonar for his first appearance of the season. Brian Mackay made way for Martin leaving Saints to see out the match with a distinctly unfamiliar midfield of Paul Kerr, David McArthur and Martin Bonar. Referee Mr Jamieson, who handled proceedings well, brought the match to an end with no further incident ensuring Scottish Amateur Cup football for Saints after the impending Christmas and New Year break.

Scottish Amateur Football Association Challenge Cup Competition
Fourth Round
Salvesen FC v Oban Saints AFC
Forrester High School 3G
212 Broomhouse Road
Edinburgh
EH12 9AE
Kick Off 1pm
Referee Mr James Jamieson

Regrettably the slight thaw in the weather conditions arrived too late to save Oban Saints scheduled trip to Port Glasgow last Saturday. A Friday afternoon pitch inspection found the grass park at Parklea Playing Fields to be frozen ruling out any chance of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy second round match between hosts Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union and cup holders Saints going ahead. This second consecutive enforced lay-off is far from ideal preparation in the build up to Saints biggest fixture of the season so far. The lead up to the Christmas and New Year break sees the Scottish Amateur Cup reach the fourth round stage where Saints will venture forth to a very much in form Salvesen of the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association Lothian West Division.

The latest stage of Saints bid to go one better than last season's extra time semi-final defeat to Leven United takes them to Edinburgh's west end this Saturday afternoon to face undefeated Salvesen. Playing their home matches at Forrester High School close to Sighthill Public Park, Salvesen are currently on a sixteen match winning streak in all competitions racking up seventy five goals in the process. Their impressive run has taken them to the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup where they will face Saints and also to the last sixteen of the East of Scotland Cup where they have a home tie against Stirling and District Premier Division leaders Callander Thistle. Following a successful spell in the Sunday morning leagues Salvesen joined the Lothian and Edinburgh Saturday section in 2015 immediately winning promotion from the Edinburgh West Division to the Lothian West Division. Currently occupying second place three points behind Shotts Thistle, Salvesen have two games in hand over the league leaders whom they have already beaten in the league and Logan Cup and knocked out of the Scottish Amateur Cup at the second round stage.

Saints recent away form has been patchy to say the least and a marked improvement will be required if they are to successfully negotiate this substantial fourth round hurdle. In a bid to get some much need game time ahead of Saturday's crunch fixture Saints tried to arrange a friendly match against West of Scotland Amateur Football League Premier Division new boys South Lochaber Thistle. The match was due to take place at Kinlochleven High School on Wednesday evening however a shortage of players forced Lochaber Thistle to call off once again leaving Saints frustrated. Work and family commitments will once again affect Manager Alex Craik's selection options as he plots to extend his team's involvement in the nation's blue ribband event beyond the Christmas and New Year break. On  a brighter note the Gaffer will at last be able to call upon fit again Martin Bonar for the first time since he injured his heel in a pre-season friendly against St Anthony's.

Cup Previews

Regrettably the slight thaw in the weather conditions arrived too late to save Oban Saints scheduled trip to Port Glasgow last Saturday. A Friday afternoon pitch inspection found the grass park at Parklea Playing Fields to be frozen ruling out any chance of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy second round match between hosts Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union and cup holders Saints going ahead. This second consecutive enforced lay-off is far from ideal preparation as Saints build up to the biggest two fixtures of the season so far. The lead up to the Christmas and New Year break sees the Scottish Amateur Cup and the West of Scotland Cup reach the fourth round stage and the draws in both major cup competitions have been particularly unkind to Saints.

East in the Scottish

First up is a trip to Edinburgh's West End this Saturday to face Salvesen of Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association's Lothian West Division. Playing their home matches at Forrester High School close to Sighthill Public Park, Salvesen are currently on a sixteen match winning streak in all competitions racking up seventy five goals in the process. Their impressive run has taken them to the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup where they will face last season's beaten semi-finalists Oban Saints and also the last sixteen of the East of Scotland Cup where they have a home tie against Stirling and District Premier Division leaders Callander Thistle. Following a successful spell in the Sunday morning leagues Salvesen joined the Lothian and Edinburgh Saturday section in 2015 immediately winning promotion from the Edinburgh West Division to the Lothian West Division. Currently occupying second place three points behind Shotts Thistle, Salvesen have two games in hand over the league leaders whom they have already beaten in the league and knocked out of the Scottish Amateur Cup at the second round stage. Saints recent away form has been patchy to say the least and a marked improvement will be required if they are to successfully negotiate this substantial fourth round hurdle.

East Kilbride in the West

The task facing Saints in the fourth round of the West of Scotland is even more daunting where they travel to Ballerup Playing Fields to face Central Scottish Amateur Football League high fliers East Kilbride. With only one defeat in sixteen competitive fixtures East Kilbride are also in a rich vein of form which has them sitting currently in second place in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division as "best of the rest" behind runaway leaders Colville Park. After taking the scalp of the mighty Colville Park in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Bunrigh Trophy third round, East Kilbride suffered their only defeat of the season so far two weeks ago in the semi-finals of the same competition against the impressive Southside of Division 1A.

Saints and East Kilbride are old friends with the South Lanarkshire boys regular pre-season visitors to Oban. This years friendly on 30th July ended goal-less after ninety entertaining minutes in front of a healthy crowd at Glencruitten.

Like Saints, East Kilbride are also through to the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup where they will face another of Saints great friends Greenock High School Former Pupils in what is sure to be one of the ties of the round. The same can also be said of Saints visit to East Kilbride in the West of Scotland Cup which would certainly not look out of place in the latter stages of the competition.

In a bid to get some much need game time ahead of their two crunch fixtures Saints have arranged a friendly match this Wednesday against West of Scotland Amateur Football League Premier Division new boys South Lochaber Thistle. The match at Kinlochleven High School kicks off at 7pm and will hopefully work off some of the recent ring rust before the fixtures which will decide whether Saints can extend their involvement in the major cup competitions beyond the Christmas and New Year break.

It's Thaw Too Late

Regrettably the eagerly anticipated weekend thaw has arrived too late to save this afternoon's scheduled match against Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union. A Friday afternoon pitch inspection at Parklea Playing Fields found the grass pitch to be frozen ruling out any chance of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy second round match going ahead. A revised date for the tie has yet to be set.

Saints will therefore endure another blank Saturday ahead of their biggest match of the season so far when they travel to face Salvesen of the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association in the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup.

Scottish Amateur Football League Select

Last Sunday at Dalziel Park, Motherwell the Scottish Amateur Football League Select were knocked out of the Scottish Amateur Football League Trophy at the quarter finals stage by the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association. Derek McGrory of Ferguslie Star opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Motherwell Thistle's Colin Gillies had been taken out in the box by the LEAFA goalkeeper. The SAFL select, which included Saints players Marc Maccallum, David McArthur, Craig MacEwan and Scott Maitland, passed up several good opportunites to extend their lead and were made to pay for their profligacy when Bob McKenzie of Sandys levelled the scores on the stroke of half time.

Spurred on by their late first half equaliser the men from the East took control of the second half and deservedly went ahead when Sean Smith of Linlithgow Thistle headed a free kick past Drumchapel Amateurs Colts keeper Scott Urquhart. Despite a valiant fight by the SAFL boys they couldn't force an equaliser and were caught out by a late counter attack with George McGregor of Craigshill Thistle thumping home from twenty five yards to make the final score 3 - 1 in favour of the Lothian and Edinburgh Select.

The semi-finals of the Inter League Trophy will be contested by the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association, the Caledonian League, the Central Scottish Amateur Football League and the Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football Association.

West of Scotland Amateur Cup

Last Saturday's sheduled third round match against Auchinleck Boswell failed to materialise when the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Second Division side elected not to travel to Glencruitten thus forfeiting the tie to Saints.

Awaiting Saints in the fourth round is a formidible task in the shape of an away trip to face old friends East Kilbride AFC of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division. The tie is scheduled for Saturday 10th December.
