Stuck in the middle of a run of three blank Saturday's Saints arranged a midweek friendly last Wednesday against newly formed South Lochaber Thistle in Kinlochleven. The new club have made an impressive start to life in the West of Scotland Amateur Football League winning three out of four matches to sit in second place in the Premier Division. Thistle's only reverse came in a close match against unbeaten league leaders Newshot with the two already looking set to slug it out for the Premier Division title.

Saints travelled with a squad of fifteen and, with rolling substitutes permitted, every player was guaranteed at least sixty minutes of action to maintain match sharpness ahead of next Saturday's Scottish Amateur Cup second round match against Bishopton. Manager Alex Craik started with Graham Douglas in goal; a back four of Jamie Graham, Craig Campbell, Dene Cassells and Dougal Graham; a midfield of Myles McAuley, Matthew Kelly and Willie Gemmell; and a front three of Craig MacEwan, Skipper for the evening Donald Campbell and Scott Maitland. On the bench were Daniel Croarkin. David McArthur, Fraser MacFarlane and Keith Millar.

The match kicked off in monsoon conditions at the foot of the Mamore hills under the floodlights at Kinlochleven High School. The torrential rain continued to fall throughout the match making for uncomfortable viewing from the sidelines but ensuring a high paced game on the extremely slick 3G surface.

Saints took advantage of the high defensive line employed by the home side to open the scoring in the fifth minute. Donald Campbell and Scott Maitland linked up well just inside the Saints half with Craig MacEwan spinning in behind the back four to get on the end of a defence splitting pass from Scott. With Scott Rodger in hot puruit Craig launched an audacious lob from thirty six yards which sailed over the head of Thistle keeper Ryan Hunter and into the net. The loss of the early goal spurred the home side on to a decent ten minute spell in which they kept Saints pinned back forcing a flurry of corner kicks. The Saints central defensive pairing of Craig Campbell and Dene Cassells coped well with the aerial assault but had to rely on keeper Graham "Sugar" Douglas to make a smart save down to his left when Paul Mcfatridge returned a headed clearance with interest firing in a shot from eighteen yards. Saints responded with a swift counter attack on the left wing where Myles McAuley made a surging run into the box but delayed slightly with his shot allowing Ryan Hunter to narrow the angle sufficiently to make the block. The loose ball spun accross to Craig MacEwan who picked out Donald Campbell for what should have been a second Saints goal however Scott Maitland unluckily deflected Donald's shot behind for a goal kick. On the right hand side Jamie Graham was beginning to get forward to support the attack and made an overlapping run in the seventeenth minute fizzing a cut back at Myles McAuley which was too firmly struck for the midfield man to get under control and the chance was lost. Jamie continued to cause problems for Thistle left back Darren Duncan and linked up well with Craig MacEwan in the twenty second minute to create an opening for a shot which only narrowly failed to find the target clipping the outside of the junction of post and bar. On the hour mark Manager Alex Craik made the first of his planned mass changes bringing on David McArthur, Daniel Croarkin, Keith Millar and Fraser MacFarlane to replace Jamie Graham, Willie Gemmell, Matthew Kelly and Scott Maitland. As the substitutes looked to bed into the match the home side enjoyed another good spell playing some nice football in the middle of the park but without seriously troubling Saints in the attacking third. Width remained the key for Saints to unlock the Thistle defence with Donald Campbell unlucky not to connect with a Craig MacEwan cross after he and Myles McAuley had worked the ball forward on the left. Saints doubled their advantage in the fortieth minute from a good move on the right involving Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan. Donald picked out Myles McAuley in the middle on the eighteen yard line with the midfield man electing not to shoot but to keep the ball moving to the left for young Fraser MacFarlane who, despite a poor first touch, knocked a tidy finish past Ryan Hunter beating the Thistle keeper at his near post. Just one minute later the pair found themselves in direct opposition again when a neat turn on the left of the Thistle box put MacFarlane through on the keeper however this time Hunter produced a good save to deny the young Saints striker. Hesitancy in the Saints back four invited a late spell of pressure from the home side with two corner kicks in quick succession and a twenty two yard shot from Dave Forbes high and wide of target before Referee David Dunlop blew for half time.

The home side made a positive start to the second half with Andrew Cunningham making a mazy run from right to left before sending a left foot shot twelve inches wide of Sugar's right hand post. Paul Mcfatridge also tried his luck finding the side netting with a well struck shot from the left hand side of the Saints box. With Saints first foray forward of the second half Craig MacEwan won a free kick twenty five yards from goal and slightly left of centre. This was perfect Willie Gemmell territory however Willie was still on the sideline at this point therefore Donald Campbell assumed responsibility for the set piece. Donald's perfectly executed low curling free kick swerved round the four man Thistle wall and skimmed along the slick surface into the bottom corner of the net past Ryan Hunter's left hand to put Saints three goals up. Craig MacEwan looked to further extend Saints advantage with a firmly struck fifty third minute shot which Ryan Hunter did well to hold. Thistle got back into the game in the fifty fifth minute when a ball over the top caught David McArthur too far up the park giving Scott Hunter a chance to run in behind. Graham Douglas came off his line to intercept but Hunter was first to the ball and deftly chipped the ball into the unguarded net to give the home side a glimmer of a chance of staging a comeback. Those hopes were extinguished just three minutes later after a terrific move from Donald Campbell and Myles McAuley was rounded off with Donald slotting a shot through the goalkeepers legs from close range. This was the cue for the Gaffer to make his second mass substitution with Dougal Graham, Myles McAuley, Keith Millar and Craig MacEwan making way for Jamie Graham, Willie Gemmell, Matthew Kelly and Scott Maitland.

Saints rounded off the scoring in as spectacular a fashion as they had opened it. After a good move on the right in the eighty fifth minute Donald Campbell spotted Ryan Hunter six yards off his goal line and from just inside the eighteen yard box lifted the ball over Hunter and into the net to complete a sensational hat-trick. Scott Maitland tested the keeper one final time with just three minutes remaining however this time Ryan Hunter got his angles spot on to tip Scott's shot over the crossbar. Referee David Dunlop, who took care of business with minimal fuss, brought a good workout in testing conditions for both sides to a close with a final score of 5 - 1 to the visitors.

Top Rankin

Saturday 10th September 2016
Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division
Inverclyde AFC v Oban Saints AFC
Rankin Park, Inverkip Road, Greenock PA16 9EU
Kick off 2pm
Referee Mr James Tedford

Just two weeks after playing host to Inverclyde Saints make the reciprocal visit to Greenock this Saturday not to the usual Battery Park on the banks of the river Clyde but up the hill on the A78 to the new facilities at Rankin Park. Saints head for the tail o' the bank on the back of an excellent performance at Glasgow Green last Saturday where they knocked old foes and current Caledonian League Division 1B leaders Finnart out of the Scottish Amateur Cup. The Scottish Amateur Cup first round win extends Saints promising unbeaten start to the season to four games including the 4 - 2 Glencruitten triumph over this Saturday's opponents. The recently opened Rankin Park will be a new venue for Saints but the journey to Greenock is a familiar one which Saints have made eight times in the last nine seasons. Only Inverclyde's one season spell in Premier Division One interrupted that run however their immediate promotion back to the Premier Division quickly returned the annual Greenock trip to Saints itinerary.

Saints last visit to Greenock in August last year saw the home side take full advantage of a poor Saints display to record their first home win over the Oban men since April 2008. A ninety third minute consolation goal from David Beaton was all Saints had to show for a disappointing afternoon's work against a determined Inverclyde side. Second half goals from Craig Ellis and Brendan Gillan added to Darren MacGregor's first half opener to give the home side a thoroughly convincing win.

The 'Clyde have made a number of changes to last season's squad which flirted with relegation until the closing weeks of the season. Early results for the new look squad have been mixed with Scottish Amateur Football League Centenary Cup group stage wins against  Broomhill, Dunoon and East End United being overshadowed by league defeats to Shawlands FP and Saints. There was further disappointment for the 'Clyde last weekend when their Centenary Cup run came to an end at the quarter finals stage with a home defeat to Motherwell Thistle. Despite their mixed form the 'Clyde will still pose a major threat and Saints will have to continue the good form they have shown in their opening four fixtures if they are to avoid a repeat of last season's slip up.

Saints successfully negotiated an extremely tricky Scottish Amateur Cup first round away tie at former Scottish Amateur Football League rivals Finnart last Saturday. All seven previous encounters with the men from Bridgeton being tight affairs the tie was therefore approached with a degree of trepidation that this season's Scotttish Cup adventure could falter at the first hurdle. Ultimately the nervousness proved unfounded and Saints produced a largely dominant display against the Caledonian League Division 1B table toppers to safely secure their passage to the second round.

Manager Alex Craik restored Scott Maitland and Dene Cassells to the defence alongside David McArthur and skipper Marc Maccallum in favour of the unavailable Jamie Graham and Craig Campbell who dropped to the bench. A late change of playing surface from the previously intimated 4G to a tight and bumpy grass park necessitated a formation change from the favoured 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2 with Ross Maitland dropping deeper to form the point of a midfield diamond with Paul Kerr at it's base flanked by Myles McAuley and Willie Gemmell. Up front were Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan with goalkeeper Thomas McCulloch completing the line-up. Keeping Craig Campbell and the Gaffer company on the bench were Paul Carmichael, Matthew Kelly and Dean Smith.

The heavy rain that had followed the Saints bus all the way from Oban cleared by the time the travelling party reached Glasgow Green and, once the heavy grey clouds had rolled by, the match kicked off in excellent overhead conditions. After some early sparring Saints slowly began to gain the upper hand in the midfield battle and probed for the openings that would unlock the experienced Finnart back four marshaled by skipper Brian Blair. The best of Saints early opportunities came by way of set pieces however Finnart keeper Brian Paton dealt comfortably with Willie Gemmell's eleventh minute free kick after Paul Kerr had been brought down on the corner of the eighteen yard box and punched clear Ross Maitland's inswinging corner after Craig MacEwan had won a corner kick on the left in the fourteenth minute. The narrow pitch made it difficult for Saints to get behind the Finnart defence however when the opening did present itself in the eighteenth minute Saints exploited it ruthlessly. Myles McAuley won possession on the half way line and quickly played the ball forward to Donald Campbell on the right. Donald worked a give and go with Craig MacEwan and set off up the right wing past full back Andrew Robertson. Donald hit the byeline and lofted a deep cross to the back post where Paul Kerr had made a good run to nod the ball into the path of Craig MacEwan who made no mistake from six yards. Donald Campbell escaped the shackles of the home defence again two minutes later but snatched somewhat at the chance shooting first time from the eighteen yard line and sending his effort well wide of Brian Paton's right hand post. With little service coming their way Finnart's front pairing of Dale Wallace and Ryan McLean were being kept well in check by Marc Maccallum and Dene Cassells and set pieces looked to be the home sides best hope of getting on the score sheet. Myles McAuley gave them just the opportunity they wanted in the twenty sixth minute with a rash challenge on Paul McLean resulting in a free kick on the Finnart left midway inside the Saints half. Finnart's dead ball expert Andrew Robertson sent a dangerous cross into the box for Dale Wallace who got between Marc Maccallum and Dene Cassells but slightly mistimed his header getting underneath the ball and heading high and wide of Thomas McCulloch's left hand post. Saints then upped the tempo a notch increasing the pressure on the home defence for the closing fifteen minutes of the first half. On the half hour mark Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan linked up well on the edge of the box from where Donald had a left foot shot blocked. The loose ball broke to Willie Gemmell supporting on the left who lofted a cross to the back post for Craig MacEwan whose close range header was well saved by Brian Paton who showed good reactions to push the ball over his cross bar. Despite Craig's protestations Referee Gallacher ruled him offside denying Saints the corner kick. Paton was in action again just moments later diving full length to his left to gather a Donald Campbell shot from twenty two yards. Craig MacEwan had a thirty third minute shot deflected wide for a corner kick from which he flashed a header across the face of goal and inches wide of Brian Paton's left hand post. Craig then attempted to turn provider sending a terrific hanging cross into the danger area after linking up well with David McArthur on the right. Unfortunately there was nobody in navy blue to take advantage and Kieren Molloy headed behind for a corner kick. Ross Maitland's inswinger from the left was headed out for a throw-in giving Willie Gemmell the opportunity to keep the pressure on. Willie's long throw found the head of Craig MacEwan whose glancing effort looked a goal all the way only for Brian Paton to pull off another fine save pushing the ball out to his left. David McArthur was first to the loose ball however the Saints full back was also denied by the reactions of Paton who was finally able to drop and smother the ball keeping the half time scoreline at 1 - 0 to Saints.

Frustratingly after such a dominant first half performance Saints continued their alarming recent trait of slow second half starts allowing Finnart back into the game within four minutes of the restart. Dene Cassells conceded a cheap corner kick knocking a hopeful long ball behind when a shout from Thomas McCulloch would have seen the ball run harmlessly through to the goalkeeper. Predominantly right footed left back Andrew Robertson put his corner kick right into the danger area for central defender Kieren Molloy to run off Myles McAuley and head home the equaliser from six yards. Saints reacted well to this set back and re-established their midfield dominance but still had to be wary of Finnart's set-pieces which remained their main threat. A fifty eighth minute free kick from the corner of the box had Thomas McCulloch scrambling across his goal line to push Andrew Robertson's cross over the crossbar. Two minutes previously Saints had their first attempt of the second half when Willie Gemmell's long free kick was nodded down by Donald Campbell to Craig MacEwan who quickly returned the ball to Donald to curl a shot over the bar from eighteen yards. Just before the hour mark Manager Alex Craik gave Paul Carmichael his first run out of the season putting him on to replace Ross Maitland who had acquitted himself well in an unfamiliar withdrawn role. The substitution proved to be an inspired one with Paul getting his name on the score sheet just three minutes after coming on. Craig MacEwan and Myles McAuley linked up well on the right with Myles powering forward before cutting the ball back to Paul Carmichael who cracked a fierce shot Geoff Hurst style off the underside of the cross bar and over the goal line before the ball ended up in the arms of goalkeeper Paton. The Finnart players complained long and hard that the ball hadn't crossed the line but, even without a Russian linesman to assist him, Referee James Gallacher was confident it had and awarded the goal. Spurred on by a sense of injustice Finnart continued their aerial assault from Robertson's deadly set-pieces but the Saints defence remained firm with Kieren Molloy's frustrations boiling over earning him a yellow card for an over zealous challenge on Marc Maccallum. Being forced to sit deeper Saints were looking to hit on the counter attack and did so in the sixty eighth minute with Craig MacEwan cutting in from the left to meet a good run and pass from Scott Maitland before shooting just wide of Brian Paton's left hand post. Paul Carmichael's powerful running from midfield was proving a handful for the home side and Philip Morrison had his name taken by Mr Gallacher for pulling back the Saints substitute inside the centre circle. Worse was to follow for Finnart in the seventy fifth minute when Kieren Molloy upended Carmichael earning himself a second yellow card in the process. The Referee's patience with Finnart skipper Brian Blair's questioning of every single decision finally snapped and he too ended up in the book. Saints set about making their numerical advantage pay and forced Brian Paton into another smart save from Paul Carmichael. A good passing move on the left involving Willie Gemmell, Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan ended with Willie picking out Paul Kerr's run into the box with the Saints midfield anchorman cutting the ball back to a similar position from where Carmichael had previously scored only for Paton to deny him a second goal. Craig MacEwan maintained his goal threat cutting in from the left in the eightieth minute and curling a shot just over Brian Paton's crossbar. The Finnart keeper was on hand two minutes later to produce another excellent save to deny Donald Campbell from a narrow angle however his good work was undone by a rash challenge on Craig MacEwan by David McHendrie which gave Donald the opportunity to make the tie safe from the penalty spot. The Saints top scorer was clinical with his finish thumping the ball high into the net giving the keeper no chance. Manager Alex Craik used the remaining minutes to give late run outs to Matthew Kelly, Craig Campbell and Dean Smith replacing Willie Gemmell, David McArthur and Donald Campbell respectively. Saints survived one last free kick from Andrew Robertson before Referee Gallacher's final whistle brought a good all round performance against difficult opponents from last season's beaten semi-finalists to a close confirming their place in this season's second round draw.

Hello Again

Saturday 3rd September 2016
Scottish Amateur Football Association Challenge Cup Competition
1st Round
Finnart AFC v Oban Saints AFC
Glasgow Green Football Centre
28 Kings Drive
Glasgow
G40 1HB
Kick Off 2pm
Referee Mr James Gallacher

Saints say hello again to some familiar faces this Saturday when they hit the Scottish Amateur Cup trail to face former Scottish Amateur Football League rivals Finnart at Glagow Green. Having reached the semi-final stage of the Scottish amateur game's most prestigious event last season Saints will attempt to go one better this season and earn a day out at the national stadium. However Manager Alex Craik would most certainly have preferred a more gentle introduction to this season's Scottish Cup campaign than a tie against 2014 quarter finalists Finnart.

In seven previous meetings with Finnart Saints hold the upper hand with five wins however the two black marks on their record came in their last two visits to Glasgow Green with a battling 3 - 3 draw in last season's encounter preceded by a 4 - 1 thumping in November 2014. Saints can expect a similarly difficult afternoon at Glasgow Green on Saturday where the match will be played on the excellent new 4G surface.

Bridgeton's finest ended  their association with the Scottish Amateur Football League last May when they successfully applied for membership of the Caledonian League. Their seven year spell in the SAFL brought Finnart the Premier Division One and Two championships and two Centenary Cup runners up slots however the Premier Division championship trophy eluded them with fourth placed finishes in seasons 2013/14 and 2014/15 being the closest they came to claiming the big prize.

Finnart have made an excellent start to life in the Caledonian League recovering from an opening day League Cup Section defeat to fellow promotion chasers Broomhouse to notch five consecutive victories in league and cup. Maximum points from clashes with Glasgow University, Balmore and Corkerhill sees Finnart sit proudly on top of Division 1B at this early stage of their Caledonian League adventure. However, despite their victories over Rhu Amateurs and Stenhousemuir Community the one defeat to Broomhouse looks set to deny Finnart progress in the Douglas Smith League Cup.

Another familiar face on Saturday will be match Referee James Gallagher well known to both sides from his time in the Scottish Amateur Football League. Now officiating in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Mr Gallagher will bring a wealth of experience at the top level to what is sure to be a tense affair between two well matched old rivals desperate to put one over on the other. If no winner can be found during the ninety minutes the sides will try again in Oban next week to decide who will advance to the second round stage.
