Oban Saints were made to dig deep to book their place in the fourth round of the West of Scotland Amateur Cup at a windswept Kilsyth Sports Field last Saturday afternoon. Well organised hosts Kilsyth Community FC Amateurs, who are flying high in Division 1A of the Caledonian League, successfully kept Saints at bay for almost an hour before a deflected Craig MacEwan shot finally turned the tie in Saints favour. Kilsyth front pairing of Peter Gribbin and Jack Williamson remained a constant threat throughout before close range efforts from Matthew Kelly and David Beaton finally made the tie safe for Saints.

Illness and injury kept Lewis Cameron and Shaun MacIver at home while Craig MacEwan, Fraser MacFarlane and Ruaridh Horne returned to an otherwise unchanged travelling party from the Scottish Amateur Cup third win in Forfar two weeks earlier. Coach Jamie Graham retained his place at right-back alongside Steven MacLeod, Captain Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. Kerr Newbigging and Daniel Croarkin continued their partnership in the middle of the park while ahead of them Donald Campbell was flanked by James Ford and David Beaton. Craig MacEwan lead the line while Graham Douglas retained the number one jersey. Making up a strong substitutes bench were Willie Gemmell, Dougal Graham, Ruaridh Horne, Matthew Kelly and Fraser MacFarlane.

Saints kicked off on the bumpy grass surface at Kilsyth Sports Field with a strong bitingly cold wind blowing across the park which would cause problems for both sides. In the fourth minute Saints Skipper Dene Cassells conceded the first of a number of free-kicks in dangerous positions, which on another day may have proved costly, when he clattered into the back of Peter Gribbin twenty eight yards from goal. Peter Griffin succeeded in lifting the ball over the four man wall but also managed to clear the Saints crossbar by some distance.

Two minutes later at the other end Craig MacEwan turned a dangerous ball across the face of goal after gathering in a Jamie Graham throw-in from the right only to see Kilsyth keeper Derek Keough lift the ball off the toes of James Ford at his near post.

The home side launched a quick counter-attack in the eighth minute after breaking up a promising Saints move midway inside their own half. Jack Williamson raced away on the right and swung a deep cross to strike partner Peter Gribben who snatched a good chance well wide of target.

Kilsyth gave another indication of the threat they would pose on the break countering from a Saints free-kick in the seventeenth minute. This time it was right wing-back Tony Donachie with the run and cross for Peter Gribbin to once again miss the target with a header from eight yards out.

Saints were struggling to get behind the well organised Kilsyth defence and found themselves limited to set pieces which failed to trouble Derek Keough in the home goal.

Referee Derek Dempster of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League produced his only yellow card of the afternoon for a badly mistimed tackle on James Ford by Ross Whyte. Thankfully Ford suffered no lasting damaged and was able to continue after a quick rub down with Davie Buchanan's magic sponge.

Dene Cassells was penalised once again in the thirty eighth minute with Peter Gribben this time trying his luck from the set-piece which he curled just over the crossbar from the edge of the Saints box.

The first half, where the hosts were the better of the two sides, ended with Dene Cassells forced to concede a corner kick from another quick break and the Saints Skipper heading clear under pressure from opposite number Peter Griffin.

Saints started the second half with an improved sense of purpose with Donald Campbell sending a tempting ball across the Kilsyth box which unfortunately bisected the runs of Craig MacEwan and David Beaton.

Peter Griffin fired another free-kick wide of target in the fiftieth minute from a Dene Cassells' conceded free-kick before the Saints Skipper won a free-kick himself from a storming run out from the back. David Beaton swung in a decent effort from the left which Derek Keough did well to pull out of the air as it threatened to find the postage stamp corner.

The deadlock was broken in the fifty eighth minute when a goal bound Craig MacEwan shot from the edge of the box took a massive deflection which left Derek Keough flat footed and saw the ball nestle neatly in the bottom corner of the Kilsyth net.

Saints almost doubled their advantage sixty seconds later when Scott Maitland and Donald Campbell combined well on the left for Donald to fire a dangerous ball across the six yard box which narrowly evaded David Beaton coming in at the back post.

A loud fifty ninth minute appeal for offside from the Saints defence was ignored by Referee Dempster with Jamie Graham arriving with a perfectly timed sliding interception to deny Peter Gribben a clear strike on goal at the expense of a corner kick.

Kilsyth Gaffer Gary Meechan made the first of his two changes on the hour mark sending on new signing David McWilliams to replace Tony Donachie. Saints Co-Manager Willie Gemmell responded four minutes later with his only change of the afternoon continuing Matthew Kelly's injury rehabilitation with another short appearance at the expense of Daniel Croarkin.

A driving seventieth minute run by Scott Maitland was brought to an unceremonious end by Kyle Brown giving Donald Campbell a chance to test Derek Keough with the free-kick. Setting his sights for the postage stamp corner, the other half of the Saints Management duo failed to replicate his colleagues dead-ball prowess and sent his curling effort high over the crossbar.

As the hosts committed more men forward it was Saints turn to hit on the counter with David Beaton winning a free-kick after being hauled down by Kyle Brown. Beaton exacted his revenge with a delivery into the box which Dene Cassells helped on to Craig MacEwan arriving at the back post. MacEwan's cushioned left foot ball across the face of goal had Derek Keough scrambling across his line but not quickly enough to prevent Matthew Kelly from tapping in from close range after an excellent late run from the edge of the centre circle.

The home side made a tactical switch for the closing fifteen minutes withdrawing defender Kyle Brown and adding striker James Kerr.

Saints continued to present dead ball opportunities to their hosts with Peter Gribbin finally finding his range after Jamie Graham had impeded Scott Crawford twenty eight yards from goal. Graham Douglas however got his angles spot on to safely clutch Gribbin's effort over the wall just under his crossbar.

At the other end Kilsyth keeper Derek Keough produced an excellent reaction save to deny Craig MacEwan throwing up a strong right hand to push MacEwan's left foot volley from a David Beaton right wing cross over the bar.

Beaton almost caught out the big keeper at his near post from the resulting corner kick landing his in-swinger from the left on the roof of the net.

Saints rounded off the scoring with just five minutes left on Referee Dempster's watch when Craig MacEwan held his run to remain onside and darted through the inside left channel to reach Matthew Kelly's measured through ball. MacEwan raced in behind the Kilsyth defence and, from the corner of the six yard box, took out Derek Keough and Ross Whyte with a flicked pass along the six yard line presenting David Beaton with an open goal for his first strike of the season.

A consolation goal was least that the home side deserved to take from the match however the Saints defence, with Steven MacLeod once again impressive at it's heart, were in no mood to surrender a highly prized clean sheet and stood firm for the remaining five minutes plus the time added on for stoppages by Mr Dempster.

Kilsyth had one final chance to breach the Saints rearguard in the final minute however Grant Penman's well flighted delivery from the right was headed wide of target by James Kerr. Referee Dempster, who handled proceedings well, brought the encounter to an end immediately on the goal kick from Graham Douglas confirming Saints progress to the fourth round.

Saints return to league business this coming Saturday where they face their biggest test of the season so far in the shape of current Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division leaders St Joseph's FP. Kick off at Glencruitten is 2pm.

Head For The Hills

Saturday 17th November 2018
West of Scotland Amateur Cup
3rd Round
Kilsyth Community FC Amateurs v Oban Saints
Sports Field
Kilsyth
G65 9JX
Kick Off 1.30pm
Referee Mr Derek Dempster

Oban Saints look to make it eleven wins in succession this weekend when they travel to the foot of the Kilsyth Hills and Lanarkshire's most northerly town to face Kilsyth Community in the West of Scotland Cup third round.

Formerly known as Kilsyth Amateurs, the long established North Lanarkshire club decided on a re-branding for this their fifty sixth season in amateur football and became part of Kilsyth Community Football Club whose aim is to bring all age groups in the town under one footballing umbrella.

The renaming coincided with the decision to end a long and successful relationship with the Central Scottish Amateur Football League for Kilsyth, where they were 2003/04 Premier Division Champions and 2005/06 McAvoy and McIntyre Cup Winners, and begin a new chapter in the Caledonian League.

Kilsyth appear to be settling in well to their new league where six wins from seven matches sees them in third position, six points behind leaders Eaglesham but with two games in hand, and well placed to mount an assault on the Division 1A title.

Coming just a little too early in the season for Kilsyth was the challenge of facing Oban Saints old foes Thorn Athletic in the Douglas Smith League Cup. A convincing 5 - 1 away win for the Premier Division leaders set them on their way to a quarter finals clash with Dumbarton Academy FP and left Kilsyth making up the group section H numbers along with Strathclyde University and Weirs Recreation.

In the major cup competitions Kilsyth reached the third round stage of the Scottish Amateur Cup thanks to a first round walkover and a 3 -1 away win at Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League Championship B side Renfrew. Unfortunately for Kilsyth they came up against near neighbours Central Scottish Amateur Football League big guns Eastfield in the third round where, despite a spirited performance from the visitors, a solitary second half goal was enough to see Eastfield progress.

In the first round of the West of Scotland Cup Kilsyth were taken to extra-time by Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Two high fliers Glynhill Moorcroft before squeezing past the Renfrew men by the odd goal in seven.

Round two produced an identical score-line but without the need for an additional thirty minutes. Clydeside Athletic of the Glasgow Colleges Football Association Premier Division were the visitors to Kilsyth Sports Field and raced into a 3 - 1 lead before a stirring comeback, including a last minute winner, sealed a third round home tie for Kilsyth against Saints.

Saturday's match at Kilsyth Sports Field will be a major test for Saints and must be played to a finish on the day with extra-time and penalty kicks coming into play to decide the winner if the two sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes. Taking charge of proceedings is experienced Referee Derek Dempster of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League.

Oban Saints Route to the Third Round of the West of Scotland Cup

Round One

Saints were scheduled to play Rannoch at Glencruitten in round one however the Greater Glasgow Premier Amateur Football League Division Three outfit elected not to fulfill the fixture handing the tie to Saints by way of a walkover.

Round Two

Round two saw Saints travel to the Toryglen Regional Football Centre in the shadow of Hampden Park to face Uddingston of the Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League. Flying high with a 100% record in Championship A hosts Uddingston would provide their Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division opponents with a tough test.

Craig MacEwan beat the Uddingston offside trap to open the scoring in the seventh minute deftly lobbing the keeper after being put through by a well weighted Daniel Croarkin pass. Ronan Hughes equalised for the hosts from the penalty spot on the half hour mark after Ruaridh Horne was penalised for barging into Brian McLeod after hesitation in the Saints defence. Parity however lasted for just five minutes when Lewis Cameron caught out keeper Kieran Muldoon at his near post with a smart finish to restore the Saints lead.

Uddingston showed just why they are favourites for a second successive league championship with a much improved second half performance which kept Saints pinned back in their own half for the most part. Despite Uddingston's domination of possession Saints defended well and looked set to the keep the hosts at bay until an eighty ninth minute wonder strike levelled the scoring for a second time. Craig MacEwan's clearing header from a corner kick from the Uddingston right fell invitingly for second half substitute Paul Cassidy who slammed a thirty yard rocket through a ruck of bodies which Graham Douglas got both hands too but could only help into the net.

Saints last visit to Toryglen, a 2015-16 Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy quarter-final against Kings Park Rangers, ended in a penalty shoot-out victory however thankfully on this occasion there was to be no requirement for a similarly nerve wracking decider.

Lewis Cameron won an eleventh minute free-kick thirty two yards from goal. With Saints having failed to pose much of a threat with their earlier set-pieces Donald Campbell finally produced a piece a magic lifting the ball over the Uddingston wall for the well timed run of Craig MacEwan who deftly glanced the ball past Kieran Muldoon's left hand to put Saints ahead for a third time.

Saints rounded off the scoring in the twenty first minute of extra-time when Kerr Newbigging sent Craig MacEwan in behind the Uddingston defence wide on the left. MacEwan took the ball to the bye-line and sent a looping cross to the back post for Donald Campbell to cushion a close range finish into the net and at last put some daylight between the two sides and seal victory for the visitors.
