Carpet Fitters Floor Inverclyde

Saturday 23rd February 2019
Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division
Inverclyde AFC 0 - 2 Oban Saints AFC
Battery Park 3G
Eldon Street
Greenock

Kick off 2.00pm
Referee Mr John McNab

A goal a-piece from ace carpet fitters Donald Campbell and Lewis Cameron floored old rivals Inverclyde at Battery Park, Greenock last Saturday afternoon. Campbell's strike just before the interval was added to by top goal scorer Cameron with fifteen minutes remaining giving Saints a hard fought victory, their first in Greenock for over five years.

The match preparations of Saints Management duo of Donald Campbell and Willie Gemmell were dealt a serious blow on the eve of the game when goalkeeper Graham Douglas was forced to withdraw from the squad with a knee injury. With back-up keepers Ben Pollock and Thomas McCulloch also unavailable an SOS call was made to veteran net minder David Dunlop. Having made his debut as a teenager the legendary keeper who was happy to oblige and stretch his Saints career to an incredible thirty two years.

Saints also had Captain Dene Cassells, Dougal Graham, Jamie Graham, Craig MacEwan and Kerr Newbigging missing giving another opportunity for some of the club's promising youngsters to join the squad.

Saints lined up with David Dunlop taking care of business between the sticks behind a back four of Ruaridh Horne, Steven MacLeod, Willie Gemmell and Captain for the day Scott Maitland. Matthew Kelly and back from injury Daniel Croarkin occupied the holding midfield roles with a three of David Beaton, Lewis Cameron and Fraser MacFarlane supporting central striker Donald Campbell. Matt Rippon and James Ford provided the experience on the bench alongside teenagers Kenneth Black, Aaron McKay and new signing Cameron Hill.

Weather conditions were firmly in the "tricky" bracket with heavy rain being driven across the park and marginally towards the pavilion end. Stand in Skipper Scott Maitland defied convention and elected to play with the wind advantage in the first half raising a few eyebrows on the sidelines.

Saints started brightly with Lewis Cameron winning a corner kick on the right inside the first minute. Fraser MacFarlane's short corner kick to Matthew Kelly was swung in towards the back post where Donald Campbell drew the first save of the game from Inverclyde keeper Robbie Laverty.

David Beaton's pace took him away from Ross McWilliams on the Saints left after ten minutes with only the quick reactions of Laverty denying the supporting Matthew Kelly as the 'Clyde keeper came out to the edge of his box to gather safely.

A straight ball over the top from the impressive Jamie Campbell gave the Saints defence their first test and sent Jonathan McGilp racing through on goal however quinquagenarian goalkeeper David Dunlop stood up well and parried away McGilp's effort from twenty two yards.

Inverclyde right back Ross McWilliams made a vital sliding interception to deny Fraser MacFarlane in the nineteenth minute with the Saints wide man poised to pull the trigger on the end of a perfectly weighted Donald Campbell through ball. From the resulting corner kick Greg Wilson's clearing header fell to Matthew Kelly on the edge of the box who couldn't get his head over his effort from twenty yards and sent it looping over the crossbar.

The home side received an early setback when Craig Ellis limped off injured after twenty minutes to be replaced by Nick Jack.

Veteran keeper David Dunlop may not be as agile as in his heyday however his reactions were still sharp enough to get down to his right hand post and clutch a good twenty fifth effort from 'Clyde midfielder Michael McKitrick.

In a good spell for the Greenock men Martyn Paton lifted a clever ball from the left into the box looking for Neil McCole which Scott Maitland did well to hook away with the Inverclyde striker ready to pounce.

Donald Campbell's link-up play once again opened up the home defence in the thirty fifth minute this time sending Ruaridh Horne through. The young fullback was forced wide by the combined efforts of Fraser Gunn and Martyn Paton and saw his low cross intended for David Beaton cut out at his near post by Robbie Laverty.

The wind gave Laverty an anxious moment in the thirty eighth minute when his clawing effort to deal with a wind assisted Scott Maitland cross from the left dropped inches wide of his left hand post and bounced behind for a corner kick.

Another overlapping run and cross from Ruaridh Horne was cleared by central defender Fraser Gunn who fell awkwardly in the process requiring treatment from the 'Clyde physio before he could continue.

A delightful pirouetting turn and flick from Daniel Croarkin paved the way for Saints opening goal on the stroke of half-time. Croarkin's flick on the turn opened up space on the right for Ruaridh Horne to run into and send a cross to the far post for Fraser MacFarlane. The scorer of the previous week's opener against Neilston this time turned provider and laid the ball back into the path of Donald Campbell whose net bound strike took a deflection off the unfortunate Fraser Gunn lifting the ball over the dive of Robbie Laverty and into the net.

The hosts received their second injury blow of the afternoon just three minutes into the second half when Gunn's painful ankle injury finally proved too much to bear for the big centre half who was replaced by Tom McKitrick.

The change of ends saw a change in the balance of play as the hard working hosts took a grip of the midfield keeping Saints pressed back in their own half.

The woodwork came to Saints rescue in the fifty sixth minute when Martyn Paton peeled off at the back post to take down a right wing cross and send a half volley crashing off the underside of the crossbar which David Dunlop was happy to see Willie Gemmell head behind on the rebound.

A flurry of changes around the hour mark saw Matt Rippon and Cameron Hill replace Daniel Croarkin and David Beaton with James Buchanan and Stewart Morrison also entering the fray for the hosts.

Making his first appearance for five months Matt Rippon put in a good half hour shift in the middle of the park helping Saints get back on level terms with their hosts in the vital midfield area.

Debutant Cameron Hill made a nuisance of himself on the right wing and fired a low cross towards the six yard line in the sixty eighth minute looking for Matthew Kelly. Tom McKitrick intercepted Hill's cross diverting the ball into the path of Donald Campbell who had his shot from fifteen yards blocked on the line thanks to the combined efforts of Greg Wilson and Michael McKitrick.

Two minutes later Fraser MacFarlane flashed a dangerous cross from the left into the six yard box which Robbie Laverty managed to get his fingertips to and take the ball away from the onrushing Cameron Hill.

Saints doubled their advantage in the seventy fifth minute with a sweeping move from inside their own penalty area. Steven MacLeod, who together with Willie Gemmell formed a solid barrier in front of David Dunlop, headed clear an Inverclyde corner kick from the right. Cameron Hill carried the ball to the half-way line and sent a diagonal ball to Matthew Kelly on the left. Kelly linked up well with Fraser MacFarlane whose low cross to the near post was thumped home by Lewis Cameron for his nineteenth goal of the season.

Ruaridh Horne's troublesome hamstring forced him off before play could restart where he was replaced by James Ford who was returning to the scene of his Saints debut eleven months previously.

Ford was joined five minutes later by young Aaron McKay who took over the wide left berth vacated by Fraser MacFarlane.

Referee John McNab, who handled proceedings well under the scrutiny of a Scottish Football Association Referee Assessor, issued the only caution of the afternoon to Inverclyde's Nathan Connelly for a late and heavy challenge on James Ford in the eighty second minute.

With five minutes remaining David Dunlop rolled back the years with an excellent finger tip save to turn a Jamie Campbell effort round his left hand post and preserve his highly prized clean sheet.

James Ford tricked his way past Nathan Connelly on the left in the final minute of the ninety and, from the bye-line, cut the ball back to Lewis Cameron whose tame effort from eighteen yards was halted on the goal line by Inverclyde Skipper Greg Wilson. This proved to be the final action of the afternoon with Referee McNab bringing the match to a close sending players and officials on both scurrying for the sanctuary of the pavilion.

Saints are on the road again this Saturday with a trip to the Donald Dewar Centre in Drumchapel to face reigning Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions Goldenhill.

Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division
Inverclyde AFC v Oban Saints AFC

Kick off 2.00pm

With a West of Scotland Cup quarter finals place safely booked thanks to last Saturday's fifth round win against Neilston, Saints can now look forward to a run of three league fixtures commencing with this Saturday's trip to the tail o' the bank to face old rivals Inverclyde. The trip to the familiar surroundings of Battery Park is likely to be another difficult one as hosts Inverclyde look to make it three home wins on the trot against Saints.

Last season's encounter was a high scoring thriller where Saints narrowly failed to claw back Inverclyde's early two goal lead eventually losing out by the odd goal in seven. After Darren McGregor's ninth minute opener Stewart Morrison doubled the home side's advantage on the half hour mark before Craig MacEwan gave the visitors some encouragement before the half-time interval. Stewart Morrison grabbed his second twelve minutes after the restart but Saints countered immediately through Donald Campbell. Debutant Ruaridh Horne made way for fellow new boy James Ford with thirty minutes remaining however Saints were caught napping at the back once again after sixty five minutes when Craig Ellis netted the crucial fourth goal for the 'Clyde. Willie Gemmell reduced the deficit to one goal for the third time in the match in the eighty seventh minute however, despite intense Saints pressure, their was to be no late equaliser and the hosts claimed the spoils helping them on their way to a fourth placed finish their highest in the Scottish Amateur Football League for ten seasons.

A win in Saturday's encounter would see hosts Inverclyde draw level with Saints on twenty one points and inflict a major blow on their visitor's hopes of mounting a serious challenge for one last Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division title before their imminent departure for the Central Scottish Amateur Football League.

League

The 'Clyde's hopes of improving on last season's top four finish were put to the hardest possible test when they were handed opening fixtures against reigning Champions Goldenhill and recently deposed Champions St Joseph's FP. Not unexpectedly results went against the 'Clyde however revenge was to follow in December when the Greenock men held St Joe's to a 2 - 2 draw and become only the second team to take points off the Duntocher men so far this season.

With home and away fixtures against Saints and a visit to Goldenhill still to come Inverclyde will have a big say in the eventual outcome at the top of the league table.

Domestic Cups

In the Centenary Cup three wins out of three in the group stages, including an away win at the very impressive Castlemilk, saw the 'Clyde into the quarter finals only to have their progress halted by cup holders Goldenhill.

Inverclyde's hopes of silveware now rest entirely on the Jimmy Marshall Trophy where their campaign has yet to get underway.

Majors

The 'Clyde were victims of some very difficult early rounds draw in the major cup competitions which saw them fail to go beyond the second round stage in either of the big two cups. In the Scottish Amateur Cup a 2 - 2 draw away at Ayrshire Amateur Football Association First Division side Catrine was followed up by defeat in Greenock. With the replay finishing one goal a-piece after ninety minutes and one further goal each being added in extra-time the Ayrshire men eventually progressed by virtue of a 4 - 2 penalty shoot-out win.

In the West of Scotland Cup it was Ayrshire opposition again for Inverclyde where they squeezed past First Division Troon Dundonald in round one to set up another home tie this time against Premier League opposition in the shape of Ardeer West Recreation. In round two eleven goals were shared at Battery Park with the Stevenston men bagging seven of them to end the 'Clyde's interest in the majors for another season.

The 'Clyde's cup exploits this season included a last minute equaliser from goalkeeper Kenny McLachlan who would later leave the club to join Saints good friends St Anthony's. Tragically for McLachlan his spell in the junior ranks lasted just fifty seconds when he sustained ruptured tendons and a dislocated knee in the opening minute of his debut against Johnstone Burgh. The serious injury resulted in the game being abandoned and put an end to the big keeper's football career. Everybody at Oban Saints wishes Kenny a speedy recovery and all the best for the future.

Not So Sweet From Sugar

Saturday 16th Febuary 2019
West of Scotland Amateur Cup
5th Round
Oban Saints 5 - 2 Neilston
Glencruitten 2
Mossfield Avenue
Oban
Argyll
PA34 4EH
Kick Off 1.30pmSaturday
Referee Mr Thomas Gilchrist

A first ever senior goal for Saints youngster Keir MacLean helped spare his goalkeeper's blushes as the normally reliable Graham 'Sugar' Douglas had an afternoon he will want to quickly forget at Glencruitten last Saturday. MacLean's strike put Saints back in control after two goal keeping abhorrations had gifted opponents Neilston a way back into what, until then, was shaping up to be a comfortable West of Scotland Amateur Cup fifth round win.

With the lead restored a late brace from second half substitute James Ford put a shine on the scoreline and sent Saints comfortably through to the last eight of the West District's premier cup competition.

Management duo Donald Campbell and Willie Gemmell stuck with the same starting line-up which had put five past Dunoon in the previous week's Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division encounter at Dunoon Stadium and added the returning James Ford to a strong bench which also boasted the now free from suspension Campbell.

Saints lined up with Graham Douglas in goal behind a back four of Ruaridh Horne, Captain Dene Cassells, Dougal Graham and Scott Maitland. Matthew Kelly and Willie Gemmell occupied the holding midfield roles with a three of David Beaton, Lewis Cameron and Fraser MacFarlane supporting central striker Craig MacEwan. Keir MacLean provided the youth on the bench alongside experienced quartet Donald Campbell, James Ford, Kerr Newbigging and Steven MacLeod.

Visitors Neilston are putting together a credible challenge for promotion to next season's Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division and made a bright start with the impressive Ryan Anderson twice beating Scott Maitland to send dangerous balls into the box inside the opening two minutes.

Neilston refused to let Saints settle and from the left wing David Millar sent Kyle Tannock through on goal with Graham Douglas coming quickly off his line to make a good block at the expense of a corner kick. Matthew Stevenson's delivery from the left was headed clear by Saints Captain Dene Cassells who, in the process, appeared to aggravate a back niggle picked up during the warm-up.

Saints eventually awoke from their slumbers with Lewis Cameron forcing a fourth minute save from Neilston keeper Gareth Fulton low down to his left.

The back injury troubling Dene Cassells became too much to bear forcing Saints into a substitution after just eleven minutes. Steven MacLeod came off the bench to replace the Skipper and join Dougal Graham in what was to prove a steady partnership in central defence.

Good work from Willie Gemmell and Fraser MacFarlane in the twentieth minute sent Scott Maitland away on the left from where the fullback delivered a tempting cross which Craig MacEwan could only slice wide of Gareth Fulton's left hand post.

The momentum was building from the home side and the breakthrough came two minutes later from the left foot of Fraser MacFarlane. David Beaton and Craig MacEwan combined well on the right with the latter laying a diagonal ball into the path of MacFarlane who threaded the ball through the legs of the advancing keeper to open the scoring.

Gareth Fulton denied Lewis Cameron again in the twenty sixth minute from another Craig MacEwan lay off as Saints maintained the upper hand.

Full backs Scott Maitland and Ruaridh Horne combined to good effect in the twenty ninth minute with Craig MacEwan once again failing to make the contact necessary to trouble the Neilston keeper. Maitland's cross from the left was taken down well by Horne and squared to MacEwan who sent the ball spinning wide of target.

Sixty seconds later Fraser MacFarlane came agonisingly close to doubling his tally making a good run on the right and steering the ball wide of the advancing Gareth Fulton but unfortunately also the bottom of the far post.

A long straight ball into the box from Neilston fullback Nicholas McCardon was well held by Graham Douglas under pressure from Sean Crumlish with the Saints keeper launching a counter attack which saw Scott Maitland race away on the left and break into the Neilston penalty area. Maitland's run was matched by Ryan Anderson who made a perfectly timed sliding interception to halt Maitland's progress and clear the danger.

The Saints left back continued to make a nuisance of himself and latched onto a well measured Craig MacEwan through ball to send a low cross into the box for Lewis Cameron. The Saints top scorer opted for a lay off to Willie Gemmell who saw his effort from twenty two yards charged down on the eighteen yard line by Ross Conway. The visitors countered with a long ball up to Kyle Tannock whose threat was nullified by Dougal Graham who comfortably mopped up the danger to see Saints through to the half-time interval good value for their slender lead.

Saints kicked off the second half attacking the Mossfield end which got off to the best possible start when Ruaridh Horne's overlapping run and cross from the right was slotted home from eight yards by Lewis Cameron after just ninety seconds.

Straight from the restart Saints regained possession with Fraser MacFarlane setting up Lewis Cameron for a shot from a tight angle across the keeper but unfortunately also wide of the far post.

A mazy diagonal run from left to right by Scott Maitland evaded four Neilston challenges before Ryan Anderson once again made a telling intervention to halt the Saints left back.

A fifty first minute foul on Lewis Cameron gave Willie Gemmell an opportunity with the dead ball from twenty eight yards however the Co Manager's quest for his first goal of the season continued with a tame effort which Gareth Fulton was able to field comfortably.

Young full back Ruaridh Horne continued to press forward on the right where he was joined in the fifty fifth minute by the overlapping Matthew Kelly whose dangerous low cross along the six yard line sadly found no takers in navy blue.

Saints high tempo start to the second half began to slow allowing the visitors a way back into the game which they were happy to accept.

Slackness in the Saints defence gifted David Millar a fifty eighth minute chance which Graham Douglas blocked with his outstretched left foot to deny the Neilston wide man.

Saints made their first change on the hour mark with James Ford coming on to replace David Beaton.

Saints policy of playing out from the back proved their undoing in the sixty third minute when Graham Douglas allowed the ball to roll under his feet and was robbed by Liam Hughes who squared to Kyle Tannock for a simple eight yard tap-in.

Donald Campbell and Kerr Newbigging entered the fray in the sixty eighth minute at the expense of Fraser MacFarlane and Willie Gemmell just moments before a major let-off when a Ryan Anderson lob from the corner of the box landed inches wide of target with the Saints keeper stranded.

Neilston worked hard throughout and were rewarded for their endeavours in the seventy first minute when a seemingly routine save from a David Millar shot spun away from the gloves of Graham Douglas and nestled in the bottom corner of the net behind the red faced keeper.

Fullback Ruaridh Horne limped off with a hamstring strain to be replaced by young striker Keir MacLean who would make a telling impact on proceedings.

Saints knew they had to up the tempo to regain control of the match and forced a good opening on the left which saw Lewis Cameron tumble in the box under a challenge from Ryan Anderson which Referee Tam Gilchrist saw nothing wrong with.

The Saints number one's blushes were spared in the eighty first minute when Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan linked up well to set up Keir MacLean who cut in from the left and slotted a cool right foot finish from nine yards past the advancing Gareth Fulton and into the unguarded net.

The Saints youngster thought he had doubled his tally four minutes later firing high into the net from a similar position after Gareth Fulton had done well to parry a Donald Campbell shot. Mr Gilchrist however cut short MacLean's celebrations ruling that the young striker had strayed offside.

James Ford made the tie safe for Saints in the final minute of the ninety finishing off a good move on the left involving Scott Maitland, Lewis Cameron and Donald Campbell with a left foot finish from a tight angle across the keeper and in off the far post.

Nicholas McCardon hooked a Keir MacLean header from a Lewis Cameron corner kick off the goal line before a late tackle on Cameron by Neilston substitute David Young, coupled with a spot of retribution from Matthew Kelly, had players on both sides reaching for their handbags in the second minute of the generous amount of time added on for stoppages by Referee Gilchrist. The experienced Caledonian League whistler, one of the top Referees in Scotland, quickly restored order issuing yellow cards to Lewis Cameron, Matthew Kelly, Kerr Newbigging and Neilston's Gareth Fulton, Robbie McNamara and David Young.

The action continued into the ninety seventh minute when a well measured Donald Campbell cross was taken down at the back post by Craig MacEwan and squared to James Ford who cushioned a volley past the left hand of Gareth Fulton and into the bottom corner of the net rounding off the scoring and sending Saints safely through to the sixth round.

Saints return to league duties this coming Saturday when they travel to the tail o' the bank to face Inverclyde.
