Last Saturday Oban Saints welcomed high flying Lesmahagow to Glencruitten in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division where four unanswered goals from the visitors kept the South Lanarkshire men's title charge well on track.

A wonder strike from Gow striker Graham Gracie was all that could separate the two sides after an evenly contested first forty five minutes however the visitors kicked on in the second half for a deserved victory which leaves Saints still struggling at the wrong end of the league table.

Manager Willie Gemmell had Steven MacLeod, Scott Maitland, Thomas McCrindle, David Beaton and Ross Maitland all unavailable so once again called on the experience of Alex Craik and the youthful promise of Preston Macintyre to bolster the match day squad.

Saints lined up with Graham Douglas in goal behind a back four of Jack Wright, Dene Cassells, Alex Craik and James Connington. Across the five man midfield were Matty Kelly, Daniel MacCuish, Myles McAuley, Gavin Forgrieve and Captain Craig MacEwan with Kyle Cooper up front. On the bench were James Ford, Willie Gemmell, Fraser MacFarlane and Preston Macintyre.

Attacking the railway line end in the first half Saints made a good start with Jack Wright's adventure on the right forcing the first corner kick of the match in the fourth minute. Gavin Forgrieve's delivery was knocked out to Wright on the edge of the box who picked out Daniel MacCuish for a left foot shot which Nathan Wharton got down well to his left to push behind for another corner kick. Dene Cassells connected well with Gavin Forgrieve's corner kick but sent his downward header bouncing narrowly wide of Wharton's left hand upright.

Scott Gray was already making a nuisance of himself on the Gow left and sent over a dangerous looking cross in the seventh minute which Alex Craik did well to head behind at the front post ahead of the waiting Jordan McCrorie. Central defender Darren Smith got his head on the corner kick from the Gow right which Graham Douglas clawed off his goal line before Ryan Innes headed to loose ball wide.

Gavin Forgrieve saw a fifteenth minute shot from twenty two yards deflected behind for a corner kick before at the other end a hooked Graham Gracie effort from the corner of the Saints box looped harmlessly into the arms of Graham Douglas.

Gracie's rich vein of form has earned him a call-up to the Scottish Amateur International Squad and he gave the Glencruitten faithful a glimpse of his striking prowess with a pin-point lob from near the left touchline which sailed over Graham Douglas and into the postage stamp corner to give the visitors the lead. The twenty fourth minute strike from Gracie was no fluke as he had already left his own goalkeeper similarly stranded from a similar position during the warm-up.

Gavin Forgrieve put another good delivery from the corner flag into the Gow six yard box in the twenty seventh minute however Kyle Cooper's glancing header was blocked by the combined efforts of Nathan Wharton and Robbie Kilpatrick.

On the half hour mark Kilpatrick beat Dene Cassells in the air to head a Gavin Forgrieve free-kick behind for a corner kick on the Saints right. Cassells made a good near post run and was inches away from connecting with Forgrieve's delivery but it was Kilpatrick again who made the clearing header.

With ten first half minutes remaining Kilpatrick chopped down James Connington twenty five yards from goal. Craig MacEwan's free-kick beat the Gow wall but not Nathan Wharton who made a smart save low to his left sending his side into the interval one goal to the good.

Very much still in the game Saints kicked off the second half knowing that the all important second goal would have a massive influence on the eventual outcome of the match. Unfortunately the all too familiar slow second half start haunted Saints again and the visitors doubled their advantage just nine minutes after the restart. Having survived a previous scare when Jordan McCrorie struck the base of Graham Douglas' left hand post Saints had their pockets picked playing out from the back. Dropping deep to receive the ball Craig MacEwan was robbed by Lewis Meikle who sent Ross Miller through the inside right channel. Miller raced into the box and slotted the ball low past Graham Douglas to give Saints a mountain to climb.

Saints Gaffer Willie Gemmell made his first change after fifty nine minutes replacing Jack Wright with James Ford. The tricky winger registered Saints first effort on target of the second half cutting in from the right for a tame effort which bounced into the arms of Nathan Wharton. The Gow goalkeeper launched a counter-attack which saw Graham Douglas parry a Scott Gray effort from the left at his near post with Dene Cassells knocking the ball out for a throw-in.

Gow Skipper Johnny Logan launched another of his long throws for which Darren Smith made an untracked near post run to glance a looping header into the postage stamp corner.

Saints kept probing for a breakthrough but received little encouragement from the visiting defence with Robbie Kilpatrick producing a man of the match performance at it's heart.

A Scott Gray foul on James Ford gave Gavin Forgrieve a sixty seventh minute dead-ball opportunity which Craig MacEwan headed wide at the back post.

Cameron Ballantyne replaced Darren Smith in the centre of the Gow defence for the closing twenty minutes in the first of visitor's personnel changes.

James Connington and Craig MacEwan linked up well on the Saints left to force a seventy fourth minute corner kick which Nathan Wharton did well to push away under pressure from Daniel MacCuish and Dene Cassells.

The visitors withdrew another of their goal scorers with fifteen minutes remaining replacing Ross Miller with Daly McSorley.

The fourth and final goal for Lesmahagow came in the seventy sixth minute at a high cost for Graham Douglas who was forced to leave the field for a hospital visit to stitch a cut above his eye following a collision with Dene Cassells. A ball over the top saw Graham Gracie nick the ball away Dene Cassells leaving Cassells and Douglas to run into one another before rolling the ball into the unguarded net.

Alex Craik took the gloves and the number one jersey with Fraser MacFarlane coming on as a replacement for Douglas. The visitors also made a change sending on Blair Weir for Ryan Innes.

The reshuffled Saints back line of Dene Cassells, Myles McAuley and James Connington did a good job of protecting stand-in keeper Craik and successfully saw out the closing stages without conceding further.

Youngster Preston Macintyre was given another taste of first team action as a replacement for Kyle Cooper who had run himself to a standstill.

Daniel MacCuish looked to have finally beaten Nathan Wharton in the Lesmahagow goal in the eighty eighth minute but saw his left foot shot from twenty yards slip inches wide of Wharton's right hand post.

Saints survived an injury time goalmouth scramble before Referee Dougie Gunning, who handled a keenly but fairly contested encounter well, brought proceedings to a close.

In a magnificent fundraising effort for a very worthy cause Mr Gunning has donated half of his fee from thirty five matches so far this season to the Beatson Cancer Charity. You can support Dougie in his efforts on his JustGiving page 'Dougie's Charity Refereeing'.

This coming Saturday Saints host Fallin in the first round of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Cinema Cup.

Challenge Cup Exit For Saints GG

Saturday 12th March 2022
Greater Glasgow Premier Amateur Football League
Bobby Thomson Challenge Cup
Round Two
Oban Saints 2 - 4 Duncanrig
Oban Community Sports Field
Soroba Road
Oban
Argyll
PA34 4JB
Kick Off 1.00pm
Referee Mr Martin Rae

Heavy overnight rain forced the postponement of Oban Saints scheduled Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division clash with Bannockburn leaving the club's second string, Oban Saints GG, to take centre stage at Oban High School last Saturday afternoon.

The Greater Glasgow Premier Amateur Football League Bobby Thomson Challenge Cup second round tie with Duncanrig kept the large home crowd richly entertained with the tie in the balance until the dying seconds when the visitors finally sealed victory in stoppage time.

Saints GG Gaffer Donald Black's team selection woes continued with a string off call-offs forcing him once again to turn to the first team squad for assistance. First team Manager Willie Gemmell was only too happy to oblige and supplied James Ford and Thomas McCrindle who were both in need of game time. Also answering the call was veteran Paul Kerr who shut the Floorshop early to provide an experienced head in central midfield.

Saints GG lined-up with Murdo Mackenzie in goal behind a back three of Alex Carson, Kenneth Black and Thomas McCrindle. Across the five man midfield were Aaron McKay, Ruaridh Munro, Paul Kerr, Ryan Barclay and Captain Craig Livingstone. Up front were Ollie Sharp and Lennon Campbell. The substitutes bench consisted Andrew Barclay, Alan Buchanan, Lewis Campbell, James Ford and Fraser MacFarlane.

Visitors Duncanrig, who currently sit in second place in Greater Glasgow Amateur Premier Amateur Football League Division 3A, started strongly with Saints seemingly struggling to come to terms with the latest enforced personnel changes.

A suspiciously offside looking Jack Belshaw was allowed to continue in the ninth minute by Referee Martin Rae with Murdo Mackenzie getting to the slightest of touches to divert Belshaw's shot onto his left hand upright. The rebound fell nicely for Kyle McCaskell who saw his net bound effort blocked by an excellent interception by Alex Carson.

The early pressure bore fruit for the visitors after eight minutes when Paul Slavin's vicious in-swinging corner kick from the right was punched into the roof of his own net by Murdo Mackenzie.

Duncanrig doubled their advantage two minutes later from another Slavin corner kick which the Saints defence failed to clear after several attempts with the ball eventually finding it's way to Jack Belshaw who had space and time to slot low past the wrong footed Mackenzie.

Saints responded with a dangerous cross from Aaron McKay on the right which Captain Craig Livingstone narrowly failed to connect with before a swift counter attack from the visitors saw Kyle McCaskell clatter the base of Mackenzie's right hand post.

Paul Kerr rolled back the years with an influential performance in the middle of the park and found Aaron McKay with a long ball in the twenty first minute. McKay took the ball down well and played in Lennon Campbell for a shot which was deflected just wide of target.

The resurgent Saints were denied twice in quick succession by Duncanrig keeper Ryan Hendry who acrobatically tipped over a dipping Thomas McCrindle shot before pushing Paul Kerr's header from Aaron McKay's delivery from the corner flag over for another corner kick.

McKay conjured up another good delivery and picked out Ryan Barclay's late run into the six yard box for a cushioned volley past Hendry to half the deficit.

The woodwork came to Saints rescue again on the stroke of half time when the home defence were caught in possession playing out from the back with Jack Belshaw nipping in to smack a shot off Murdo Mackenzie's right hand post.

Saints made a promising start to the second half with Paul Kerr and Aaron McKay both coming close with shots from the edge of the Duncanrig box.

Manager Donald Black made his first changes after fifty three minutes sending on Fraser MacFarlane and James Ford to replace Thomas McCrindle and Lennon Campbell.

Saints failure to deal with a corner kick cost them dearly again in the fifty fifth minute. Paul Slavin's delivery from the left was headed out to the edge of the box and the unmarked Kyle McCaskell who sent a stunning strike past a static Murdo Mackenzie to reinstate the visitors two goal advantage.

Duncanrig keeper Ryan Hendry needed two attempts to gather Ruaridh Munro's dipping sixty seventh minute effort from twenty eight yards as Saints resumed their efforts for a route back into the match.

The visitors remained a constant threat on the break and Alex Carson made a good covering challenge to deny Jack Belshaw in the sixty fourth minute after the Duncanrig striker had got away from Ryan Barclay.

Belshaw and Barclay were in direct opposition again in the seventieth minute when an excellent stretching recovery challenge from Barclay prevented Belshaw from bursting through. Barclay's challenge however came at a high cost as he was forced to limp off with a hamstring strain. Younger brother Andrew got the call to join the action from the substitutes bench.

Central defender Alex Carson brought Saints back into contention with eleven minutes remaining. Carson's attempted cross on the run from the right deceived Ryan Hendry who was left clawing at thin air as the ball flew into the top corner.

Alan Buchanan and Lewis Campbell replaced Ruaridh Munro and Ollie Sharp for the closing stages where Saints battled hard for an equaliser which would take the tie to a penalty shoot-out.

Aaron McKay showed good anticipation to step in and win possession in the centre circle before racing forward for an eighty fourth minute left foot strike from twenty five yards which flew just wide of Ryan Hendry's right hand post.

The Duncanrig defence were doing a good job of protecting their goalkeeper but when Hendry was finally called into action he made an excellent save low to his left to push away a net bound James Ford shot from twenty two yards.

With Saints pushing everything they had into their pursuit of an equaliser they were picked off on the counter-attack in the second of the four additional minutes allowed by Referee Martin Rae. Andrew Barclay was left one on one with Jack Belshaw who raced away from the youngster to slot past Murdo Mackenzie and seal his side's progress to the third round.

This coming Saturday Oban Saints host high flying Lesmahagow in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division. Saints GG have a free week.

MacEwan Plays A Captain's Part to Give Saints The Points At Eastgate

Saturday 5th March 2022
Central Scottish Amateur Football League
Premier Division
Gartcosh United 0 - 1 Oban Saints
Eastgate
Gartcosh
Glasgow
G69 8AT
Kick off 2pm
Referee Mr Ross Stirling

A flash of inspiration from Oban Saints Skipper Craig MacEwan earned his side three valuable Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division points at Eastgate last Saturday afternoon. Despite going down to ten men in the forty second minute hosts Gartcosh United remained a constant threat with Saints unable to find the vital killer second goal and ultimately happy to claim victory by the narrowest of margins.

Manager Willie Gemmell's team selection options where stretched once again and Daniel Cassells answered the SOS call to take the gloves for the second time this season producing a typically assured performance with the added bonus of a highly prized clean sheet. Gemmell sprang a surprise by handing Jack Wright a starting role at right back while James Conington was pushed forward into the front three with Kyle Cooper and Craig MacEwan. Making a welcome return after a lengthy absence was James Ford.

Saints lined up with Daniel Cassells in goal behind a back four of Jack Wright, Steven MacLeod, Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. Across the three man midfield were Myles McAuley, Gavin Forgrieve and Matty Kelly. Up front were James Conington, Kyle Cooper and Captain Craig MacEwan. On the bench were James Ford, Willie Gemmell, Ross Maitland and Thomas McCrindle.

Saints survived a couple of early scares from hosts Gartcosh who came into the match off the back of a confidence boosting 10 - 1 rout of Uddingston Anvil the previous weekend. Philip Dolan shot just over the crossbar from the edge of the box in the tenth minute before two minutes later Ross Fisher raced away from Dene Cassells on right to send a low shot across the face of goal and inches wide of the far post.

A major weapon in the Gartcosh arsenal is the prodigious throw-in of left fullback Jordan Murphy. Dene Cassells headed Murphy's fifteenth minute throw-in from the left out of play for another throw on the right which Matty Kelly headed away launching a counter-attack on the Saints left. Kyle Cooper looked set to skip past Bradley Renfrew but the right fullback halted the youngster's progress at the expense of a free-kick midway inside the Gartcosh half.

Gavin Forgrieve's delivery from the left was won in the air by Myles McAuley whose header was controlled on the edge of the box by Craig MacEwan who sent a sensational volley flying high into the net beyond Scottish amateur international goalkeeper Stuart Wilson.

Kyle Cooper came close to doubling Saints advantage in the twenty fifth minute with an effort very much inspired by the Skipper's opener. Scott Maitland made a good interception at the back and quickly looked to turn defence into attack with a ball into midfield for Myles McAuley to carry forward. McAuley in turn picked out Craig MacEwan who ran into traffic with Matty Kelly picking up the loose ball. Kelly's bouncing lay off sat up invitingly for Kyle Cooper whose dipping effort was well saved by Stuart Wilson.

Scott Maitland brought down Gartcosh right winger Ross Fisher in the twenty seventh minute with Daniel Cassells getting down well to his right to gather Scott Starrs' free-kick.

Cassells was called into action again five minutes later this time diving to his left to turn Philip Dolan's shot round the post for a corner kick. Scott Starrs' delivery from the right found the head of Stewart Diamond but the big central defender sent his header high over the crossbar.

The home side were reduced to ten men in the forty second minute when Referee Ross Stirling flashed a red card in the direction of Daniel Kinlan for his retaliation after a robust challenge from Jack Wright.

Two minutes into the second half Wright made a telling contribution in his own eighteen yard box with a vital interception to take the ball off the toes of Dylan Kerr after a good run on the right by Philip Dolan.

Having previously been deployed in defence and midfield James Conington was enjoying his new role in attack and latched onto Craig MacEwan's forty eighth minute flick-on to drive into the Gartcosh box. Conington held off the challenge of Jordan Murphy before firing off a shot which Stuart Wilson saved well to his right.

Referee Stirling gave the hosts the benefit of a close offside call in the fiftieth minute halting Kyle Cooper in his tracks. Five minutes later Mr Stirling harshly ruled against Cooper again chalking off what appeared to be a perfectly good goal for offside.

The ten men kept up their search for an equaliser giving Saints plenty opportunities to hit on the counter-attack. Jack Wright won possession midway inside the Saints half and sent Kyle Cooper off on another run. Cooper did well to hold off Stewart Diamond and play in Matty Kelly who was denied by Stuart Wilson who smothered the ball at Kelly's feet.

Saints Gaffer Willie Gemmell made his first change with twenty seven minutes remaining replacing James Conington with James Ford. Fit again after a lengthy spell on the side lines Ford was quickly involved in the action linking well with Kyle Cooper and Matty Kelly before firing in a shot from eighteen yards which was blocked en-route to goal. Referee Ross Stirling, who handled proceedings well, dismissed the loud Saints appeals for a penalty kick.

Not quite at it's early season best the bobbly grass surface at Eastgate gave Daniel Cassells a scare causing him to spill a sixty eighth minute from substitute Gary Pettigrew before making a good recovery to gather the ball at the feet of Dylan Kerr.

Myles McAuley gathered in a seventy third minute free-kick from Gavin Forgrieve and laid the ball off to James Ford for a low shot from eighteen yards which Stuart Wilson held low to his right with Matty Kelly ready to pounce on any handling error from the Gartcosh Skipper.

As the match moved into the closing stages the long throw-ins of Jordan Murphy looked to be the hosts best hope of producing an equaliser but the Saints defence stood firm to repel the aerial bombardment and preserve their clean sheet.

The evergreen Ross Maitland was given a late run out as a replacement for youngster Kyle Cooper as Saints successfully ran down the clock to secure three valuable league points.

This coming Saturday Saints welcome title challengers Bannockburn to Glencruitten.
