Welcome Back

Saturday 16th July 2016
Pre-Season Friendly
Oban Saints AFC v Vale of Leven FC
Glencruitten 1, Glencruitten Drive, Oban PA34 4EB
Kick off 2.00pm
Referee Mr Jimmy Litster

Following last year's first ever visit to Oban, Saints are delighted to welcome back Vale of Leven Juniors this Saturday afternoon for what should be another good pre-season workout for both sets of players. Saints got their pre-season fixtures schedule off to a flying start two weeks ago with an excellent undefeated showing in the D&K Lafferty Cup tournament and will be keen to build on that against this Saturday's visitors. The Vale have yet to play so far this pre-season but have been working hard in training for the past three weeks. Vale currently ply their trade in the Scottish Junior Football Association West Region Central District Second Division where they finished last season in tenth place with 21 points from 22 games played. This third from bottom finish represented Vale's lowest final league position for 51 years and is one which the club are desperate to improve upon.

As part of their quest to revive the club's fortunes the Annual General Meeting in May ratified the promotion of Under 21's Manager Brian Brown to the post of Assistant to first team Manger Hugh Hamill. The pair are already working hard to bring about a change in the Vale's recent spell in the doldrums and are looking forward to an exciting season ahead. Brian's place at the helm of the Under 21's set-up has been taken by former Vale, Airdrionians, Arbroath, Clydebank, Cowdenbeath and Dumbarton player Toby King who is tasked with the development of the club's crop of talented youngsters. The Vale have also been carrying out some essential pitch maintenance work at Millburn Park dictating that all but one of their pre-season friendlies will be played away from home.

Notwithstanding their current lowly league position the Vale have a long and illustrious history in the game and to secure this pre-season friendly match between the clubs is a major coup for Saints. Originally founded in 1872 Vale of Leven won three successive Scottish Cups (1877 - 79) and became unofficial British champions in 1878 beating English F.A. Cup holders The Wanderers at Kennington Oval. In 1890 they were founder members of the Scottish Football League where, excluding brief flirtations with the Scottish Alliance, the Scottish Football Combination and the Western League, they remained until 1939 when they club disbanded due to the suspension of league football for World War Two. The club immediately re-emerged as Vale of Leven Football and Athletic Club becoming members of the Scottish Junior Football Association. Over the years many league and cup successes followed the biggest of which being the Scottish Junior Cup win in 1953.

Last year's encounter

Glencruitten 1 stood up well to torrential rain on the eve of the match and survived an early morning pitch inspection allowing the match to go ahead. The semi-professionals from Alexandria playing their first pre-season match looked in the mood and were rewarded for their bright start in the sixth minute when David McNaught exploited a gap in the Saints defence to drill a shot into the bottom corner past Thomas McCulloch's left hand. Saints responded well to the early setback and equalised in the twenty fifth minute when Dean Smith's glancing header from a Lewis Cameron corner kick squeezed in between the junction of post and bar to restore parity. Saints took the lead in the thirty sixth minute after another good passing move through the midfield. Dean Smith picked up the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal where a skillful turn created space for a thumping shot which flew past the Vale keeper into the postage stamp corner. Lewis Cameron notched another assist for Saints third goal again providing a perfect delivery from the corner flag which was on this occasion met by a thumping header from Martin Bonar to send Saints into the half time interval 3 - 1 up. Both sets of players served up an equally entertaining second forty five but this time the defences came out on top and neither side managed to add to their tally.  Referee John Scott, who had enjoyed an easy afternoon, brought a sporting encounter to a halt giving new Saints Manager Alex Craik a win in his first 90 minutes in charge.

Saints still have a few regulars missing due to injury and holidays but will have a strong squad available for selection for Saturday's match where Manager Alex Craik will be keen to give as many players as possible some valuable game time against experienced opposition. It is anticipated that the Vale will bring their full squad to Oban for the first of four friendlies before their season kicks off in earnest with a Sectional League Cup tie away at Johnstone Burgh on Saturday 6th August.

Oban Saints got their preparations for the 2016 - 17 season underway last Saturday in traditional style with the 23rd playing of their annual tournament kindly sponsored by D&K Lafferty Contractors Ltd. Once again the tournament attracted top quality participants in the form of regulars Alloa Athletic, Dundee United, Hamilton Academical and trophy holders Heart of Midlothian who, together with the hosts, entertained the large crowd of spectators to a feast of football despite the damp conditions. Due mainly to their early involvement in the new style SPFL League Cup the visitors were represented by their Under 20's Development League teams with Saints getting in on the act by blooding youngsters Jay Cooper, Matthew Kelly and Fraser MacFarlane.

Dundee United and Hamilton Academical got proceedings underway at Mossfield with Accies edging a tight game 1 - 0 courtesy of solitary strike from Player of Tournament Steven Boyd early in the second half. Referee Jim Pearson handed Dundee United a late lifeline awarding the Terrors a penalty kick when Matthew Smith went down in the box. Smith took the penalty kick himself but was foiled by an excellent save from Alex Marshall in the Accies goal.

The first match at Glencruitten was contested by Heart of Midlothian and Alloa Athletic and ended honours even with the Wasp's Adam Martin cancelling out David Wilson's strike for the Jam Tarts.

Saints entered the fray against an extremely youthful Alloa Athletic side at Mossfield. The first twenty minute period was played in heavy rain and was dominated by Saints without causing the Wasp's defence too many problems. The rain abated in time for the second half and it was the visitors who had the first attempt on target inside the first minute. Donald Campbell conceded a free kick twenty five yards from goal which Graham "Sugar" Douglas had to look lively to tip over his crossbar. Alloa also won the header from the resulting corner kick which, fortunately for Saints went wide of Sugar's right hand post. Saints responded with a free kick of their own after Scott Maitland had been brought down on the left wing. Willie Gemmell sent a deep cross to the back post which Craig Campbell headed back across goal only for the ball to be taken off the forehead of Donald Campbell by an excellent clearing header at the expense of a corner kick. Saints opened the scoring in the twenty seventh minute with a cool finish from the evergreen Ross Maitland. Martin Bonar flicked on a long ball from the back from skipper Marc Maccallum with Ross timing his run perfectly to get in behind the Wasp's defence and lob the advancing keeper from eighteen yards. Saints had a good opportunity to extend their lead three minutes later when David McArthur won a corner kick on the right. Ross Maitland landed a perfect delivery onto the head of Martin Bonar who made good contact but was unable to direct his header on target sending it eighteen inches over the crossbar. Saints made the points safe with three minutes remaining from the head of young Fraser MacFarlane. Martin Bonar once again provided the flick on for Ross Maitland on the right who sent over a terrific cross for debutant MacFarlane to head home from six yards. There was one final attempt from David McArthur taking down a raking diagonal pass from Donald Campbell and firing a shot wide of the top corner before Referee Jimmy Litster brought proceedings to a close.

The second match at Glencruitten was a thriller between Hamilton Academical and Heart of Midlothian with the Accies coming out on top by the odd goal in five. Jamie Brandon and Russell MacLean were on target for Hearts with Ross Cunningham replying before that veteran of many fixtures "trialist" netted twice to clinch the points for Accies.

Saints continued on Mossfield against Heart of Midlothian where it was very much a case of defences on top in a goalless draw. Saints enjoyed the majority of possession throughout and came closest to scoring in the third minute when Scott Maitland cracked an eighteen yard left foot drive off the crossbar with the goalkeeper well beaten. One minute later Craig MacEwan cut in from the left and fired in a low shot which the keeper did well to hold on the slippery surface. Paul Carmichael was winning more than his fair share of headers and tested the goalkeeper in the thirteenth minute with a looping header from the edge of the box which the keeper did well to hold under pressure from Craig MacEwan. Hearts showed a little more promise in the second half and Dene Cassells had to look lively to head away a dangerous looking cross from the left wing in the thirty fifth minute. With two minutes remaining Paul Carmichael made space for a well struck left foot shot from twenty two yards but sent it straight into the goalkeeper's midriff. Hearts had their only attempt on target in the final minute which Thomas McCulloch saved comfortably before Referee Andrew Taylor, making his tournament debut, blew for full time.

At Glencruitten Dundee United recovered from their opening match defeat to early pace setters Hamilton Academical to claim their first points of the day against Alloa Athletic. Goals from Graham Taylor and towering centre half Harry Souttar sealed a convincing victory for the Terrors over their considerably less Wasps side.

Dundee United's third fixture was against Heart of Midlothian at Mossfield where the Terrors racked up the biggest winning margin of the day defeating the Jam Tarts by three goals to nil with the goals coming from Matty Smith, Logan Chalmers and Graham Taylor.

Saints crossed to Glencruitten for the crunch match against Hamilton Academical and survived a close shave in the first minute when they failed to deal with a Stephen Boyd free kick into the box with Thomas McCulloch relieved to see Ross Cunningham's shot slip wide of his left hand post. Boyd had another chance to show his dead ball prowess midway through the half and sent a decent effort narrowly wide of McCulloch's right hand post. Accies broke the stalemate two minutes into the second half with a spectacular opportunist effort from Boyd. There appeared to be little danger when Thomas McCulloch cleared a Dene Cassells pass back but as the ball fizzed in Boyd's direction he caught the Saints keeper well off his line with a perfectly executed first time volley into the unguarded net. Saints Manager Alex Craik opted to freshen things up replacing Martin Bonar and Fraser MacFarlane with Paul Carmichael and Craig MacEwan and the substitutes quickly combined with Craig getting in a good cross from the right which Paul headed just over the crossbar. MacEwan was again involved in the thirty fourth minute wining a corner on the right which ultimately led to the Saints equaliser. Willie Gemmell's corner kick was forced behind by the Accies defence giving Willie a second opportunity to pick out a Saints head in the box. The Accies defence again stood firm but could only clear the ball as far as Keith Millar who was fouled twenty five yards out before he could return the ball to the danger area. Willie Gemmell lined up the free kick and sent an excellent delivery to the back post where Donald Campbell got round behind the Accies defence to sent a sensational diving header into the postage stamp corner giving keeper Alex Marshall no chance. The Accies defence appealed for offside but Assistant Referee John Scott's flag correctly remained down and Referee John Stobo awarded the goal ensuring the match finished all square.

Going into the final round of matches the cup was still very much up for grabs with Dundee United, Hamilton Academical and Oban Saints all still in contention albeit with Accies in pole position. Saints and Dundee United were in direct opposition at Glencruitten where a win for either would clich the trophy but only if Accies were to slip up against Alloa Athletic at Mossfield. In an end to end match at Glencruitten Saints and Dundee United gave it all they had to find the goals required to pip Accies but the roars coming from the Accies faithful at Mossfield left both in no doubt they were facing an uphill struggle. An eventful match for Saints keeper Graham Douglas began when Referee Archie Mitchell insisted he change his luminous orange shirt which clearly clashed with United's colours. Graham swapped his orange shirt for Thomas McCulloch's even brighter yellow shirt and proceeded to keep the United attack at bay with a string of excellent saves while at the other end his opposite number was also in good form denying Craig MacEwan and Donald Campbell. Sugar's heroics took a heavy toll when he picked up a calf strain making another excellent save from Logan Chalmers which saw he return the yellow jersey to Thomas McCulloch who came on for the closing four minutes. By this time Saints and United were playing only to decide who would finish as runners up as Lewis Smith and tournament top scorer "Trialist" had two goals in front against Alloa Athletic. Saints had one final chance to clinch all three points against Dundee United when Dene Cassells made a strong run out from central defence and found Craig MacEwan on the left wing. Craig beat the United full back and sent in a tempting cross which, despite getting his head to, Dean Smith couldn't direct on target sending his header wide of the keeper's left hand post resulting in the match finishing all square and United edging out Saints for second place behind tournament winners Hamilton Acacdemical.

Presentation

Tournament organiser David Buchanan thanked the visiting teams for their continued support of the tournament and congratulated winners Hamilton Academical and player of the tournament Stephen Boyd on their success. David also thanked the spectators, many of whom had travelled considerable distances to be there, and the match officials Donnie Brooks, David Dunlop, Jimmy Litster, Archie Mitchell, Jim Pearson, Martin Rae, John Scott, John Stobo and Andrew Taylor without whom the event couldn't take place. David then called upon Councillor Roddy McCuish to present the winning team with their individual trophies and the winning Captain Ronan Hughes with the D&K Lafferty Cup.

Here We Go

The 23rd annual Oban Saints pre-season tournament takes place this Saturday at Mossfield Stadium and Oban Lorne Rugby Club where once again the enduring popularity of the event is exhibited in the top class participants the tournament continues to attract. All four of this years visitors are regular attenders and boast a dozen tournament wins between them. The late withdrawal of St Johnstone left tournament organiser David Buchanan insufficient time to line up a suitable replacement therefore the tournament goes ahead with five teams instead of the usual six. The round robin tournament format remains the same with each match lasting forty minutes.

Despite the competition being principally designed to aid in the building of pre-season fitness it is keenly contested and victory is greeted with as much celebration as any other trophy win. The tournament has been blessed with some excellent weather over the years but unfortunately Saturday's forecast is for rain. Whatever the weather the anticipated large crowd is sure to be entertained to a feast of quality football.

Saints are delighted that shirt sponsor D&K Lafferty Contractors have agreed to sponsor the club's flagship event for the fourth consecutive year. D&K Lafferty are fantastic supporters of local sport and everybody connected with Oban Saints is pleased to see them rewarded with the wide exposure that sponsorship of this prestigious tournament can offer.

Making their 10th consecutive tournament appearance are three time winners Alloa Athletic. The Wasps unfortunately dropped out of the Scottish Professional Football League Championship after a three season spell and begin their quest for an immediate return to the second tier in five weeks time with a home match against Peterhead. This is preceded by a series of Bet Fred League Cup matches commencing on Tuesday 19th July at home to Cove Rangers. Alloa's preparations for the new campaign commenced last Saturday with a 3 - 0 win over Fort William which was a creditable result for the Highland League side on their fist visit to the Indodrill Stadium. On Wednesday night the Wasps continued their build up to the season's first competitive match drawing 1 - 1 at home against Championship side Dunfermline Athletic and were due to face Premiership Dundee on Friday night again at the Indodrill Stadium.

Dundee United have an excellent record of three wins from their eleven previous appearances. Carrying United's hopes of drawing level with Heart of Midlothian on four tournament victories are their Under 20's Development League squad. United's under 20's finished 8th in last season's SPFL under 20's league, two places better than the previous season's 10th place finish but with an identical points total of 40 from 32 games. Satisfyingly for the Terrors their sixty four goal haul saw them finish as the league's third highest goal scorers behind Champions Celtic and runners up Hamilton Academical and ensured they finished above city rivals Dundee on goal difference.

Hamilton Academical make their 13th consecutive appearance at the tournament and have entrusted their bid for a third tournament win in four years to their Under 20's Development League squad. The Accies youngsters enjoyed an excellent league campaign last season finishing runners up to runaway winners Celtic with sixty two points from thirty two games, eight points ahead of third placed Aberdeen.

Having been brought forward by a week to suit the new BetFred League Cup format the D&K Lafferty Cup tournament unfortunately now lands between two significantly more important fixtures for reigning champions Heart of Midlothian. On Thursday night they opened their Europa League campaign with a 2 - 1 win over FC Infonet from Estonia. The return leg of the first qualifying round tie will be played in Tallin next Wednesday 6th July. The four time tournament winners have therefore decided to send their under 20's development league squad to Oban for the club's 12th tournament appearance while the first team prepare for their trip to the Baltic state of Estonia with a friendly against Cowdenbeath at Central Park.

The 2015 - 16 campaign was a roller coaster ride for new Manager Alex Craik but one with which he was ultimately satisfied. Pre-season success in the Argyll & Bute Cup looked set to pave the way for a serious assault on the Scottish Amateur League Premier Division title however only one point from the opening three fixtures quickly gave Saints a points deficit from which they failed to recover. The Royal National Mod Cup joined the Argyll & Bute Cup on the Saints sideboard in October with the team also embarking on their Scottish Amateur Cup and West of Scotland Cup adventures. The West of Scotland Cup run was ended at the fifith round stage by a 2 - 1 home defeat to Colville Park arguably the top amateur club in Scotland at present. The Scottish Amateur Cup campaign was the stuff of dreams with Saints reaching their first ever semi-final of the Scottish Amateur Football Association's blue riband event claiming the scalps of Craigshill Thistle, Doune Castle and Shortlees Amateurs along the way. Unfortunately Saints dreams of a cup final appearance at Hampden Park were turned to dust with a 2 - 1 extra time defeat to Leven United at New Douglas Park. The crushing disappointment of the Scottish Amateur Cup semi-final defat took a heavy toll on the squad and it was several weeks after before the players began to look anything like themselves again during which time any lingering hopes of mounting a late challenge for the league title were also extinguished. However the season ended on a high for Alex Craik and his charges with the capture of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy from holders St Joseph's with a convincing 3 - 1 win at Millburn Park, Alexandria. Speaking to The Oban Times after Saints final match of the season Alex said "It's been a rollercoaster of a season. Our league form was inconsistent but if you had said to me at the start of the season that we would reach the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, win the Jimmy Marshall Cup and finish fourth in a very competitive Premier Division I would have bitten your hand off. I've enjoyed every minute of it." The Saints faithful look forward in eager anticipation to another thrilling season ahead.
