Last Saturday at Parklea Saints began their defence of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy in confident style against one of the stalwarts of the Scottish Amateur Football League Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union AFC. Port Glasgow OBU celebrated their 110th anniversary in 2016 which is a fantastic achievement, particularly in the current climate of long established clubs having to fold. True to their motto, Port Glasgow OBU have remained Sure and Steadfast throughout their history and have a long and happy association with the Scottish Amateur Football League. OBU have admirably chosen not to follow the well worn path to other leagues taken by many long standing SAFL member clubs including close neighbours Greenock High School Former Pupils and Gourock Athletic, electing instead to stay with the Scottish Amateur Football League and battle on in search of that elusive promotion to the Premier Division.

Line-up

Martin Bonar, Jamie Graham and Matthew Kelly dropped out from the squad named for the Argyll Derby win against Campbeltown Pupils with Dean Smith returning to make up a fourteen man travelling party. Ever present Thomas McCulloch continued in goal behind a back four of David McArthur, Skipper Marc Maccallum, Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. Myles McAuley and Paul Kerr anchored the midfield with Donald Campbell just in front. Paul Carmichael spearheaded the attack flanked by Brian Mackay and Craig MacEwan. The experienced trio of Willie Gemmell, Ross Maitland and Dean Smith made up a very attack minded bench.

Stroll In The Park

The one mile stroll from the changing rooms at Parklea bowling club along the banks of the Clyde to the good sized grass park was a pleasant one made all the better when it revealed a good sized grass park bathed in January sunshine. The hosts kicked off but it was Saints who immediately gained possession with Craig MacEwan wining a free kick twenty three yards out and slightly left of centre. Donald Campbell took responsibility for the dead ball but sent a poor effort into the wall. Donald fared slightly better with the rebound getting his shot on target but with insufficient power to trouble Mark Turner in the OBU goal. Restored to the full back slot after a three match stint at centre half David McArthur was relishing the chance to get forward on the right wing and sent in a teasing cross in the fourth minute which Turner did well to pick out in the low sun ahead of Craig MacEwan. Donald Campbell had another dead ball opportunity in the fifth minute and lofted a good ball into the box however the low sun shining across the park made any high balls from the Saints right difficult to pick out and Paul Carmichael miscued his header high and wide. Carmichael followed this effort up with a strong run on the left supported by Myles McAuley. A sixteen yard shot from Myles was blocked with Craig MacEwan reacting first to the loose ball and curling an effort towards the postage stamp corner which Mark Turner got his fingertips to at the expense of a corner kick. There was again no joy from Donald Campbell's delivery from the right with the home defence comfortably clearing the danger. OBU ventured forward for the first time in the tenth minute with Skipper Iain McEwan getting away from Dene Cassells and sending in a shot from a tight angle which Thomas McCulloch could only parry across the face of his goal. Fortunately for Saints Skipper Marc Maccallum was alive to the danger getting back to mop up the loose ball ahead of lone OBU striker Kevin Franck. Saints raced to the other end and Scott Maitland had a low left foot shot blocked behind for a corner kick. Donald Campbell's in-swinger from the left was met by David McArthur on the six yard line who climbed well but couldn't direct his header on target sending it just wide of Mark Turner's left hand post. With only one striker to occupy the back four Saints full backs David McArthur and Scott Maitland were able to push forward at every opportunity. McArthur linked up well with Brian Mackay in the fourteenth minute to create a shooting chance for Mackay which cannoned off George McGowan and out for another corner kick from the right. Donald Campbell this time opted for a lower trajectory picking out David McArthur whose hook shot from nine yards hit Johnathon Archdeacon on the back and was hoofed clear. Myles McAuley had a run through the midfield halted unfairly by Jordan Axeworthy in the sixteenth minute. Paul Kerr took the free kick quickly rolling the ball to Craig MacEwan who fed Donald Campbell on the right hand corner of the box. Donald swung in a good cross looking for MacEwan's run but Craig's header, again made difficult by the low sun, looped wide of target. An almost identical cross from Donald two minutes later was met this time by the head of Paul Carmichael but with a similarly disappointing result. Saints made the breakthrough which their almost complete domination deserved in the nineteenth minute. Donald Campbell threaded a pass through the inside right channel for Brian Mackay who raced in behind the high OBU defensive line, around keeper Turner and squared to Paul Carmichael who slid in at the back post to poke the ball into the unguarded net. Saints doubled their advantage five minutes later when Paul Carmichael gave chase to a long diagonal ball from Dene Cassells beating Craig Hill in a foot race and picking out Donald Campbell who timed his run to the back post perfectly before calmly stroking home from six yards. The OBU defence claimed Donald had strayed offside however Referee Mr McNeil was not interested and turned down their appeals having words with Craig Hill. The sense of injustice continued from the home side and Jordan Axeworthy found his way into the Referee's note book for an over the ball challenge on Myles McAuley just inside the Saints half. Thankfully Myles sustained no damage and was able to link up with Scott Maitland from a throw-in on the left working his way into the box and shooting low to the near post forcing Mark Turner to save with his feet at the expense of a corner. McAuley was in the thick of the action again in the thirty eighth minute providing a cross from the left which Paul Carmichael volleyed home left footed for Saints third goal. Myles continued his purple patch creating an opportunity for Craig MacEwan in the thirty ninth minute whose low right foot shot grazed the outside of Mark Turner's left hand post on it's way wide. In the last action of the first half Craig MacEwan was clipped just outside of the OBU box and was inches away from connecting with Donald Campbell's free kick which also found it's way wide of Turner's left hand post.

Saints kicked off the second half and immediately resumed where they had left off. Craig MacEwan curled a right foot shot towards the postage stamp corner which Mark Turner at full stretch finger tipped behind for a corner kick. Donald Campbell's delivery from the corner flag was deep to the back post and was returned on the half volley by Brian Mackay whose shot across the face of the goal flew narrowly wide of the post. The early second half pressure from Saints bore fruit in the forty eighth minute when Craig MacEwan thumped a shot off the crossbar and had the presence of mind to gather the rebound, trick his way past two defenders and roll the ball past the OBU keeper from ten yards. There was to be no respite for the home defence as straight from the re-start Craig MacEwan and Paul Carmichael burst through again. Paul's shot was blocked by Mark Turner but Craig was on the spot to curl the loose ball high into the net for Saints fifth goal. Full credit to the home side who despite being well beaten all over the park never gave up or resorted to violent tactics. Their commitment to the cause was almost rewarded in the fifty first minute when for once they got the better of Saints solid midfield and defence to create an opening for Iain McEwan. The OBU Skipper sent a shot across Thomas McCulloch who had to throw out a strong left hand to turn the ball round the post. Saints rounded off a rampant fifteen minutes with a Myles McAuley shot just wide of target before the on fire Craig MacEwan sealed his hat-trick volleying home a Scott Maitland cross from the left. Tormentor in chief MacEwan declared on three and was replaced by Ross Maitland on the hour mark with Willie Gemmell and Dean Smith also joining the action to replace Paul Kerr and Brian Mackay respectively. Dene Cassells made a mazy run out from the back in the sixty second minute which was halted unfairly twenty eight yards from goal by the combined efforts of George McGowan and Peter Williamson. So often deadly from that range Willie Gemmell unfortunately sent the free kick crashing into the four man OBU wall. A long ball over the top in the sixty fifth minute caught out the otherwise untroubled Saints central defensive pairing of Marc Maccallum and Dene Cassells. Dene gave chase to Jordan Axeworthy fouling the OBU midfielder in the process. The free kick gave the home side the chance to test Thomas McCulloch but the uneventful afternoon continued for the big Saints keeper when Axeworthy's shot trundled harmlessly wide of his left hand post. As the sun disappeared from the sky both the temperature and the pace of the game dropped. Dene Cassells continued to push forward and combined with Ross Maitland to set up Willie Gemmell for a shot from distance which flew wide of Mark Turner's left hand post. In the seventy first minute a good pass on the right from David McArthur sent Paul Carmichael racing up the touchline. A terrific cross on the run from Paul was met at the near post by a diving header from Dean Smith on the six yard line which Dean was disappointed to see go well wide. Mr McNeil produced the second card of a quiet afternoon for him in the seventy third minute taking the name of Michael Hepburn for kicking the ball away after a push on Paul Carmichael resulted in a Saints free kick. From Willie Gemmell's delivery into the box Paul Carmichael attempted an overhead kick which unfortunately he couldn't connect well enough with skying his spectacular effort over the crossbar. Mark Turner produced three good saves in quick succession to deny Ross Maitland twice and then Dean Smith at the near post at the expense of a corner kick. The frustration continued for Dean in the seventy ninth minute when he was just behind a tempting cross from the right from David McArthur. Dean's desperation for a goal led him to snatch a twenty two yard shot high and wide when a pass to Ross Maitland looked a far better option. Paul Carmichael repeated the feat just one minute later to take the missed chances tally comfortably beyond those successfully converted. There was still time for Mark Turner to produce two more saves firstly leaping high to his left to claw away a Dene Cassells shot and then a considerably more routine stop from a weak Donald Campbell effort. Turner's saves and Saints wayward finishing ensured no further scoring with the six nil win sending Saints through to the third round where they will face a trip to either Arkleston United or Shawlands F.P.

Jimmy Marshall Trophy
Second Round Tie
Port Glasgow Old Boys Union AFC v Oban Saints AFC
Parklea Playing Fields
Greenock Road
Port Glasgow

Kick off 2pm
Referee Mr Jim McNeil

This Saturday Saints begin their defence of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy secured at Millburn Park, Alexandria last May in an absorbing 2 - 1 final win over then holders St Joseph's FP. This season's campaign kicks off with an away tie against one of the stalwarts of the Scottish Amateur Football League Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union AFC. Port Glasgow OBU celebrated their 110th anniversary this year which is a fantastic achievement, particularly in the current climate of long established clubs having to fold.

OBU's last Scottish Amateur Football League honour was the 1996 - 97 Premier Division Two title and any hopes of adding this season's Premier Division 2A title to their list of honours have already been extinguished after a faltering run of two draws and six defeats from their opening eight matches which leaves them in ninth place trailing league leaders Rossvale Amateurs by twenty four points. Encouragingly for OBU their best performances of the season so far have come against the league leaders holding them to a 2 -2 draw at Bishopbriggs on the opening day of the league season and losing out by the odd goal in five at Parklea nine weeks ago. However since that narrow home defeat in November OBU have dropped a further six home points against Houston and Millbeg Villa leaving them now in a no less exciting battle to avoid finishing bottom of Premier Division 2A.

After a bright start in the Scottish Amateur Football League Centenary Cup group sections which saw them win three out four matches losing out only to Premier Division Goldenhill, OBU have unfortunately found the going in the major cup competitions to be extremely tough. A second round Scottish Amateur Cup home defeat to reigning Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs was quickly followed by an eleven goal hammering in the West of Scotland Amateur Cup at Kilbirnie of the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association First Division.

Saints and Port Glasgow OBU have met many times over the past forty or so years with the most recent encounters coming in the Jimmy Marshall Trophy. Saints came out on top in the 2007 quarter finals tie at Glencruitten before eventually finishing as runners-up to Pollock. Saints repeated the feat in the 2012 first round en-route to another cup final defeat this time at the hands of Hillington.

With the tie have twice previously fallen victim to the weather and further fixture disruption a distinct possibility Saints will be desperate for this week's good weather to continue into the weekend to allow the tie to proceed. The tie must be decided on the day with penalty kicks to decide who progresses if the sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes. Awaiting the winner of Saturday's second round match is an away tie against Arkleston or Shawlands FP. If Saints can successfully negotiate those hurdles they will end a run of eight consecutive away or neutral venue Jimmy Marshall Trophy ties with a home quarter final tie against Port Glasgow. However OBU will relish the chance to do battle with the trophy holders on home soil and Saints know they are in for a potentially tricky afternoon at Parklea.

Last Saturday's Argyll Derby defied the winter weather being the only Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division fixture to do so. With the grass at Kintyre Park out of action the match went ahead on the excellent all weather surface at Kinloch Green which itself has survived at liberal coating of snow on the eve of the match. Saints took full advantage of their fellow title chasers' inactivity climbing to second place in the table, one point behind leaders and reigning Champions East Kilbride Amateurs. on the back of a hard fought but ultimately convincing win over Argyll rivals Campbeltown Pupils.

Dougal Graham and Dean Smith dropped out from the eighteen man squad named for the Scottish Amateur Cup win over Westdyce and, with everybody else available. Manager Alex Craik had the rare luxury of being able to name the same starting eleven in consecutive matches. Ever present Thomas McCulloch continued in goal behind a back four of Matthew Kelly, David McArthur, Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. Brian Mackay dropped back from the previous week's striker's role into a more accustomed midfield position alongside Myles McAuley and Skipper Paul Kerr. Paul Carmichael spearheaded the attack flanked by Ross Maitland and Craig MacEwan. The experienced quintet of Martin Bonar, Donald Campbell, Willie Gemmell, Jamie Graham and Marc Maccallum gave the Gaffer plenty of options from the bench.

Despite a bright start with Dene Cassells twice sending Paul Carmichael racing in behind the Pupils defence with measured passes from the back, Saints were unable make an early breakthrough with the Pupils weathering the early storm. Pupils were working hard to close down their opponents all over the park disrupting Saints usual measured build up and forcing them to go long more often than they would have liked. Frustration got the better of Paul Carmichael in the thirteenth minute when a lunging challenge on speedy young left winger Ryan Deans earned him a ticking off from Referee Litster who resisted the temptation to produce a card. From the free kick on the left just inside the Saints half Pupils skipper Keith Mitchell could only find the head of his opposite number Paul Kerr who easily cleared the danger. In a more adventurous spell from the hosts Liam Renton drew a good save from Thomas McCulloch low down to his left and Paul Kerr made a vital interception to cut out a Ryan Deans cross after the winger had shown Matthew Kelly a clean pair of heels. A turn and shot from the edge of the box by Gary Grumoli in the eighteenth minute slipped past Thomas McCulloch's left hand post before Saints earned some respite with a corner kick won by Brian Mackay on the Saints left. An excellent delivery right into the heart of the six yard box was bundled goalward by Brian Mackay but without the power to beat Robert Coffield in the Pupils goal who gathered the bouncing ball ahead of Mackay and Dene Cassells. In the twenty second minute Myles McAuley and Brian Mackay combined to set up a shooting opportunity for Ross Maitland who couldn't keep his twenty two yard effort down clearing the crossbar by two feet. A twenty fifth minute run along the edge of the box by Ryan Deans was ended unfairly by Scott Maitland giving Gary Grumoli a chance to test Thomas McCulloch from the dead ball. The big Saints keeper read Grumoli's intentions well and made a comfortable save before launching a counter attack with Liam Renton doing well to edge out Paul Carmichael and usher the ball behind for a goal kick. Saints lack of fluency continued to frustrate and another unnecessary challenge from Paul Carmichael, this time on Keith Mitchell, earned the Saints striker the game's first yellow card. Saints took the aerial route in the thirty third minute with David McArthur sending a long straight ball into the Pupils box. Ellis Robertson won the header but couldn't get any distance on his clearance with Ross Maitland picking up the loose ball and seeing a goal bound shot blocked by a forest of legs on the six yard line. Somewhat against the run of play Saints took the lead in the thirty sixth minute. A perfectly weighted through ball from Brian Mackay sent Paul Carmichael through on goal. Paul rounded keeper Coffield and, from an acute angle, sent the ball high into the net past the despairing dives of Coffield and Lee Allan on the goal line. As you might expect from a local derby some of the tackles were a little feisty and Jamie Burns was lucky to escape a card after cynically taking out Matthew Kelly. Saints doubled their advantage just before the half time whistle with easily the best move of the match. Brian Mackay and Craig MacEwan passed their way through the Pupils midfield on the right. With space in front of him MacEwan raced forward and worked a terrific one-two with Paul Carmichael. Carmichael's deft back heel on the corner of the eighteen yard box was perfectly into MacEwan's path who curled a delightful finish beyond Coffield's right hand and into the net. The two goal half-time deficit was harsh on Pupils who had worked hard but full credit to Saints whose superior quality eventually created the openings which they ruthlessly capitalised on.

The home side kicked off the second half but it was the visitors who settled quickest and took control of the vital midfield area. Saints were first to threaten with Ross Maitland winning a corner off Grant Grant and sending in another excellent delivery from the left which Dene Cassells climbed well to meet but couldn't direct on target thumping his header twelve inches over the crossbar. Saints remained in control but had to be mindful of the threat posed by Pupils on the counterattack. A slip on the left by Scott Maitland allowed Pupils to launch a diagonal ball looking for Ryan Deans with David McArthur making a vital headed interception at the expense of a corner kick. Much to the annoyance of the Saints bench Deans was left unmarked at the back post with McArthur again coming to the rescue blocking the shot from Deans and clearing the danger. In the fifty ninth minute Matthew Kelly and Ross Maitland combined well on the right with Ross sending a teasing ball into the box which Robert Coffield did well to turn behind for corner just ahead of Craig MacEwan. Ross kept up the quality of his deliveries with another ball just begging to be headed home. Paul Carmichael was the miscreant on this occasion glancing his header well wide of Coffield's right hand post. After escaping punishment for some heavy challenges Grant Grant eventually found his way into Referee Litster's note book for dissent in the sixty fourth minute. Pupils were very much still in the match at this stage and the feeling on the Saints bench was that a third goal was required to make the game safe. To this end Manager Alex Craik decided to freshen things up by bringing on Donald Campbell and Marc Maccallum to replace Paul Carmichael and Matthew Kelly. Donald replaced Paul in a straight swap at centre forward while Marc took up his accustomed position at the heart of the defence with David McArthur moving to right full back. The Pupils robust style cost them cautions for Jamie Burns and Lee Allan with the card for Burns ultimately to prove extremely costly. With thirteen minutes remaining Saints made a triple substitution bringing on Jamie Graham, Willie Gemmell and Martin Bonar to replace Scott Maitland, Myles McAuley and Ross Maitland respectively. Willie Gemmell made an instant impact badly mistiming a challenge on Jamie Burns before he had a chance to get up to the pace of the match. Mr Litster considered the challenge worthy of a yellow card, unfortunately for Pupils he also showed a second yellow to Burns for his violent reaction to the challenge from Gemmell. The red card finally extinguished any feint hopes Pupils had of getting back into the match with Saints threatening to run riot in the closing stages. Marc Maccallum made his obligatory once a match lung bursting run from the back in the eighty first minute drawing an excellent save from Robert Coffield who shoveled the ball round his left hand post for a corner kick. With Ross Maitland off the field Willie Gemmell took responsibility for the dead ball and didn't disappoint with a tempting ball into the six yard box which Craig MacEwan and Marc Maccallum both went for. Both beat Liam Renton to the ball which nestled in the bottom corner past Coffield's right hand. Skipper Maccallum, whose goals are rare, immediately claimed the goal with MacEwan countering that he had got the vital touch. A poll on the Saints official Twitter account later awarded the goal to the Skipper ultimately denying Craig the match ball. Saints kept up the pressure on the beleagured Pupils defence with Martin Bonar keeping alive a deep Craig MacEwan cross from the left and flashing a left foot drive narrowly wide of the junction of post and bar. In the eighty seventh minute Paul Kerr chased down a seemingly lost cause on the right keeping the ball in play and cutting back to Brian Mackay just inside the box. A tired looking tackle from behind by Ellis Robertson sent Mackay sprawling and had Mr Litster pointing to the spot. Regular penalty taker Donald Campbell deferred to Craig MacEwan who slammed the ball high to Coffield's left to put the visitors four nil up. There was no let-up from Saints in the closing minutes and only some good saves from Coffield and Saints own wayward finishing kept the scoreline down before Mr Litster blew for full time. Pupils are very much a side in transition at the moment but Saints will nonetheless be delighted to emerge from Argyll's biggest Derby match with full points. A special mention for Referee Jimmy Litster who handled a full blooded encounter well getting all the big decisions correct and remaining firmly in control even when tempers briefly threatened to boil over.

Long Road

After last weekend's exploits in securing a place in the Scottish Amateur Cup sixth round draw, Saints return to league business this Saturday taking the long road to Kintyre Park to face old rivals Campbeltown Pupils. While Saints were easing past Aberdeenshire Amateur Football Association Division Two East outfit Westdyce their Argyll rivals Pupils were on league duty against Shawlands FP where they notched up their second league win of the season to lift themselves off the foot of the table and into eighth place above Drumchapel Amateurs Colts and Inverclyde. After preserving their Premier Division status with a thrilling last day of the season win over Saints on Sunday 5th June 2106, a much weakened Pupils made a dismal start to their 2016 - 17 campaign with a record 10 - 0 reverse against Saints at Glencruitten. A much welcomed free weekend allowed the Pupils to regroup and record an excellent 1 - 1 draw in their next fixture away at reigning Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs. A home win against newly promoted Premier Division One Champions Drumchapel Amateurs Colts completed the turnaround in fortunes before a run of just one point from the next four fixtures left Pupils rooted to the bottom of the table.

Understandably concentrating on their league fixtures Pupils featured only briefly in this season's major cup competitions losing their only West of Scotland Cup match away at Paisley and District Amateur Football Association Premier Division high fliers Fordbank Star. An encouraging start to the Scottish Amateur Cup campaign with a second round away win at Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Division Three side Broomlands was promptly ended when they unfortunately had to scratch from the third round tie away at reigning Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions Blochairn Star.

Last weekend's league win against Shawlands FP, who themselves had notched consecutive wins against Goldenhill and Ferguslie Star, will be a major confidence booster for Pupils and just what the Doctor ordered ahead of the Argyll Derby meeting with Saints. While the stakes for this Saturday's fixture are somewhat lower than last season's win or bust last day thriller there still remains three valuable Premier Division points as well as local bragging rights up for grabs. Pupils will be desperate to avenge the humiliating 10 - 0 defeat inflicted on them at Glencruitten in August just as Saints desperately need points to keep pace in what is developing into a fascinating tussle for this season's Premier Division title.
