Oban Saints had their hopes of a Scottish Amateur Cup Final appearance crushed by cup holders Colville Park at New Douglas Park, Hamilton last Saturday. For the second year running the Scottish Cup adventure came to an end at the semi-final stage with a frustrated Saints contingent once again feeling they could and should have done better. Despite taking a deserved first half lead Saints couldn't hold against their vastly experienced opponents conceding two sloppy goals before finally succumbing to a killer third goal from Scottish Amateur international striker David McKay.

Manager Alex Craik was relieved to see his squad come through midweek training with no further injuries to be added to the list. After the previous weekend's spell in the forward line Scott Maitland returned to his more familiar position on the left of the defence alongside David McArthur, Dene Cassells and Skipper Marc Maccallum. Myles McAuley, Willie Gemmell and Brian Mackay made up the midfield with a forward line of Paul Carmichael, Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan. Goalkeeper Thomas McCulloch completed the starting line-up with the Gaffer taking the unusual step of naming back-up keeper Graham Douglas among the substitutes. Also on the bench were Jamie Graham, Matthew Kelly, Ross Maitland, Fraser MacFarlane and Dean Smith.

Saints kicked off in bright sunshine attacking the North stand of the Superseal Stadium but quickly conceded possession with Dene Cassells having to remain strong to see out a Stephen McDevitt long ball looking for James Miller. Miller was again the target on the Colville right in the second minute where Scott Maitland made the block to concede the first corner kick of the match. Dene Cassells climbed above Stephen McDevitt to head the ball out wide to the right from where David McArthur launched an immediate counter attack. Craig MacEwan showed good control taking down David's long ball up the right touchline however his cross looking for Paul Carmichael was too heavy allowing Kenny Marshall to mop up the danger.

Colville dominated the early possession and created a decent opening in the fifth minute with a Darren Miller pass almost playing in Jamie Bradley who had strayed marginally offside. A seventh minute foul on Paul Carmichael by Stephen McDevitt gave Saints their first glimpse of goal but Paul pulled his shot from Craig MacEwan's quickly taken free-kick well wide of target.

Saints took a more measured approach to their next set-piece sixty seconds later with Willie Gemmell knocking the ball from the centre circle out wide to David McArthur on the right. David lofted the ball into the danger area but too close to Colville keeper Ryan Ward who claimed comfortably on his six yard line.

In the ninth minute Colville central defender James Mulvay came in late on Craig MacEwan midway inside the Colville half with Referee Ross Holms content to give Mulvay a warning rather than issue a caution. Willie Gemmell's free kick was headed clear by Mulvay who together with Thomas Airlie and Kenny Marshall made up a solid back three for the Motherwell men.

Myles McAuley made a driving run from midfield in the twelfth minute making good progress on the left before the combined attentions of Mulvay, McDevitt and Paul McLaughlin forced the ball out for a throw-in. Saints kept the pressure on from Scott Maitland's throw with Brian Mackay working the ball across to the overlapping David McArthur who fired in a low shot which Ryan Ward did well to turn round his left hand post for a Saints corner.

It was Ward to the rescue again for the cup holders from Willie Gemmell's corner kick, Jamie Bradley forced the ball out to the edge of the box which Donald Campbell retrieved and linked up with Myles McAuley and Brian Mackay to create another shooting opportunity. Space opened up for Donald sixteen yards from goal but his curling right foot shot was well held by the Colville keeper diving to his left.

Saints continued their good spell with David McArthur's run up the right touchline being halted illegally by Jamie Bradley. Willie Gemmell's free-kick was again headed out, this time to the right, where Craig MacEwan tried to trick his way along the bye-line and into the box. Craig got past Thomas Airlie and was scythed down just inside the box by James Mulvay but Mr Holms spotted a shirt pull by Craig on Mulvay and gave the decision in favour of the big Colville defender.

Colville had the ball in the net in the twentieth minute but were denied by an offside flag. Donald Campbell pulled back James Miller midway inside the Saints half giving dead ball expert Darren Miller an opportunity to put the ball into the danger area. Miller's deep cross found the head of Jamie Bradley whose downward header was tucked away from six yards by Paul McLaughlin who, fortunately for Saints, was flagged offside by the stand side linesman.

Two minutes later Darren Miller sent another dangerous ball into the Saints box which Thomas McCulloch held well under pressure from Paul McLaughlin on the corner of his six yard box. Colville continued to enjoy more of the ball but without posing any serious threat to the reasonably comfortable looking Saints back four. When space did open up for Christopher Craig in the twenty seventh minute he dragged his shot from the edge of the D well wide of Thomas McCulloch's right hand post.

Saints took the lead on the half hour mark from a long Thomas McCulloch free-kick after James Miller had been penalised for a shirt pull on Scott Maitland. McCulloch's long ball from level with his eighteen yard line wide on the left was knocked on by Paul Carmichael to Craig MacEwan. Craig held off challenges from Kenny Marshall and James Mulvay before finding Donald Campbell twenty five yards from goal. Donald threaded an excellent first time pass to Paul Carmichael in the inside left channel who timed his run to perfection to beat Thomas Airlie's claims for an offside flag. Paul raced into the box and lifted the ball left footed from ten yards over the advancing Ryan Ward and into the roof of the net to edge Saints in front.

Colville tried to hit back straight from the restart with James Miller lifting a decent effort from eighteen yards over Thomas McCulloch and onto the roof of the Saints net. Then a looping Stephen McDeviit header from the centre circle sent Paul McLaughlin racing through the middle with Marc Maccallum for company. After a good tussle McLaughlin went sprawling just outside the Saints box but not before he had been penalised for a shirt pull on the Saints Skipper. There was an anxious moment for the Saints as Referee Holms consulted his Assistant who appeared to have flagged in favour of Colville however Mr Holms was happy to let his initial decision stand.

Dene Cassells became the first name in the Referee's note book for a late challenge on Paul McLaughlin on the half-way line as Colville threatened to counter after mopping up a Willie Gemmell free-kick. Kenny Marshall's long straight ball was headed out by Paul Carmichael but straight to Darren Miller who sent a speculative effort from twenty eight yards well off target.

Saints were caught out in the forty second minute when trying to play the ball out from the back after another deep free-kick this time from James Mulvay. David McArthur played a risky ball to Brian Mackay who was robbed by Jamie Bradley coming in on the blindside. Bradley played a one-two with Christopher Craig and picked out Paul McLaughlin in space inside the box. McLaughlin turned well and tucked a neat finish inside Thomas McCulloch's right hand post to bring the cup holders level. This was a bitter blow for Saints to concede such a sloppy goal undoing a good first half performance however full credit to Colville who ruthlessly exploited the slip-up.

Neither side made any personnel changes for the start of the second half which Colville kicked off harnessing the benefit of the strong wind. Colville Manager Michael Kennedy did however opt to have his wide men James Miller and Jamie Bradley switch flanks.

Now operating wide on the left James Miller cleverly drew a foul from David McArthur for a nudge in the back. Namesake Darren flighted a cross towards the penalty spot where Marc Maccallum was waiting to head clear. Donald Campbell picked up the loose ball and launched a counter attack up the left wing where Craig MacEwan was closed down by James Mulvay.

After five second half minutes Paul Carmichael won a free-kick wide on the Saints left and ten yards inside the Colville half. Brian Mackay peeled off to the left to accept Willie Gemmell's free-kick and quickly returned the ball to Willie twenty five yards out who, from a promising position, didn't get hold of his shot and sent a tame effort well wide of target.

In the fifty third minute Dene Cassells was penalised for a trip on Darren Miller twenty eight yards from goal on the Colville right. Miller went low with his free-kick which took a nick off the Saints wall on it's way past Thomas McCulloch's left hand upright. Current Scotland Amateur International Miller trotted over to take the corner kick which Marc Maccallum headed clear launching another Saints counter attack. Once again Craig MacEwan couldn't escape the close attentions of James Mulvay who made a good interception on the half-way line at the expense of a throw-in.

Colville Park continued to enjoy the majority of the possession restricting Saints to attacking on the break. In the fifty eighth minute after breaking up a Colville attack Saints built a good passing move through the middle. Myles McAuley linked up with Brian Mackay who rolled the ball up to Paul Carmichael twelve yards inside the Colville half. Paul held the ball up well and laid off to Craig MacEwan who lofted a ball forward looking for Brian Mackay who had continued his run, Unfortunately Craig's pass was too heavy and skipped away from Brian and safely through to Ryan Ward in the Colville goal.

Colville demonstrated their strength in depth with their first substitution on the hour mark replacing current Scotland international Paul McLaughlin with amateur international legend David McKay. McKay was quickly involved in the action chasing down a long ball which Marc Maccallum did well to intercept at the expense of a corner kick. Garry Tierney collected Darren Miller's corner kick from the right at the back post and rolled back to Stephen McDevitt who looped a left foot shot straight at Thomas McCulloch.

In the sixty third minute Brian Mackay robbed James Mulvay eight yards inside the Saints half and wide on the left. Mackay sent Paul Carmichael racing through the inside left channel with Kenny Marshall and Garry Tierney in pursuit. Marshall forced Paul wide who couldn't get a shot away and a great chance was lost.

Enjoying a better spell of possession Saints pressed forward but were once again unable to get in behind the experienced Colville back three. Donald Campbell's attempted pass to Craig MacEwan was intercepted on the edge of the Colville box with Kenny Marshall sending the ball long looking for David McKay who was impeded by Marc Maccallum wide on the Colville right and level with the eighteen yard line. Stephen McDevitt made a good near post run but fortunately his stooping header on the corner of the six yard box from Darren Miller's free kick failed to trouble Thomas McCulloch and went well wide of target.

In the sixty ninth minute Jamie Bradley squeezed in between Dene Cassells and Willie Gemmell to glance a header wide of Thomas McCulloch's left hand post after James Miller and Darren Miller linked up well on the left for David McKay to cross onto the six yard line.

With twenty minutes remaining Saints Manager Alex Craik made his first substitution bringing on Matthew Kelly to replace Brian Mackay. Kelly's first involvement was to help launch a counter attack from another Colville free-kick on their right. Darren Miller's delivery into the six yard box was headed out by Dene Cassells and helped on to Donald Campbell by Matthew Kelly. Donald played the ball up to Craig MacEwan inside the centre circle who held the ball up well and laid off to Paul Carmichael racing forward from the Saints box. Paul's run was eventually halted on the edge of the Colville box by the combined efforts of James Miller, Thomas Airlie and Garry Tierney.

Disaster struck for Saints in the seventy second minute when a bizarre own goal gave Colville a massive slice of good fortune that they could scarcely believe. A Willie Gemmell free kick from just inside the Saints half was too heavy for Paul Carmichael and bounced harmlessly through to Ryan Ward. The Colville keeper launched a kick from hands upfield and, after some head tennis in the centre circle, Colville worked the ball out to James Miller on the left. Miller lifted the ball over the head of David McArthur and into the Saints box for Jamie Bradley who got there just before Scott Maitland and flicked the ball past Thomas McCulloch on the six yard line. The ball trundled towards the goal line with Dene Cassell's looking set to clear the danger however Dene's hooked clearance cannoned off Myles McAuley and into the net leaving both incredulous and Saints staring down the barrel.

From the restart Willie Gemmell sent a long ball from the centre circle looking for Donald Campbell on the right. Donald was crowded out by Garry Tierney and James Miller who recieved a rap on the ankle for his troubles which earned Donald a yellow card which would eventually prove very costly.

Things went from bad to worse for Saints in the seventy fifth minute when Myles McAuley was harshly penalised for handball when the ball appeared to strike him on the chest. Darren Miller rolled the ball out to Stephen McDevitt on the right who lofted a diagonal ball from thirty yards into the Saints box. Deadly striker David McKay got in between David McArthur and Marc Maccallum and from twelve yards guided a perfect header inside Thomas McCulloch's left hand post to stretch Colville's advantage and leave Saints facing a monumental task to get back into the game.

Saints freshened things up by withdrawing Willie Gemmell and introducing Ross Maitland on the right wing with Donald Campbell dropping back into midfield. Colville also rang the changes with Stephen Burden coming on to replace James Miller.

Maitland's first contribution of the game was to bring down David McKay midway inside the Saints half. Darren Miller's free-kick found McKay in the box but Marc Maccallum kept a close eye on him eventually knocking the ball out for a corner kick on the Colville left. Another good delivery from Darren Miller was headed clear at the near post by Matthew Kelly under pressure from David McKay.

With nine minutes remaining Saints Manager Alex Craik gave one last roll of the dice replacing Paul Carmichael with Dean Smith. Saints then produced one of their better moves of the match working the ball across the park from left to right where David McArthur and Donald Campbell linked up well to send Ross Maitland to the bye-line. The delivery from Ross onto the six yard line would have been perfect for the recently departed Paul Carmichael. Unfortunately Dean Smith doesn't pose the same aerial threat and James Mulvay was able to head clear. Saints kept the pressure on through Scott Maitland and Donald Campbell who tee'd up Dene Cassells for a dipping shot from thirty yards which Ryan Ward couldn't hold but managed to gather at the second attempt ahead of Ross Maitland.

The game was well and truly up for Saints when they lost the services of Donald Campbell with five minutes of normal time remaining. Donald took exception to a flying elbow from Jamie Bradley when the pair contested an aerial joust on the edge of the centre circle. Referee Holms had an excellent view of the incident but strangely didn't see anything wrong with Bradley's challenge. Mr Holms also had a clear view of Donald's retaliatory two handed shove into the chest of Bradley and promptly produced a second yellow card for Donald which could well have been a straight red.

With two minutes of the ninety remaining Colville made their final change bringing on Alex Clearie to replace Christopher Craig. The reigning Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions and Scottish Amateur Cup holders used their numerical advantage and all of their considerable experience well comfortably running down the clock including the four additional minutes allowed by Mr Holms to book their place in next month's Hampden Park final.

Despite their obvious disappointment at again losing out on a Scottish Amateur Cup final appearance Saints can be justifiably proud of their achievements over the past two seasons. Alex Craik and his men can count themselves extremely unlucky to have come up against the quality of Colville Park who ruthlessly exploited every Saints error on their relentless march towards back to back Hampden finals.

Saints remain in cup action this coming Saturday when they welcome Port Glasgow to Glencruitten in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy.

Last Saturday Saints warmed up for their impending Scottish Amateur Cup semi-final against Colville Park when they welcomed first time visitors Motherwell Thistle to Glencruitten. With rivals East Kilbride FC Amateurs and Goldenhill slipping up elsewhere Saints had an ideal opportunity to make up ground in the Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division title race. However Saints Scottish Amateur Cup form sadly deserted them tamely surrendering the points to their visitors and giving them a massive boost in their battle to avoid relegation to Premier Division One.

Craig MacEwan and Willie Gemmell were unavailable as was the injured Paul Kerr so it was a welcome sight for Manager Alex Craik when Matthew Kelly reported fit for duty after shaking off his recent ankle injury. Elsewhere the Gaffer sprung a surprise by giving Scott Maitland an attacking role alongside Donald Campbell and Ross Maitland. Scott's usual left back berth was filled by Jamie Graham with David McArthur, Skipper Marc Maccallum and Dene Cassells making up the rest of the back four in front of keeper Thomas McCulloch. The three man midfield of Brian Mackay, Myles McAuley and Paul Carmichael completed the starting line-up. The returning Kelly joined Martin Bonar, Kerr Newbigging and Dean Smith on the bench.

Saints started well and were rewarded for their early endeavours in the sixth minute. A deep David McArthur free-kick from the half-way line was headed out to the Saints left by Thistle Skipper Stuart Hunter. Donald Campbell picked up the loose ball and drove into the box chased by William McMaster. Donald's chipped left foot cross from just short of the bye-line took a deflection off McMaster which sent it spinning away from Paul Aiton in the Thistle goal and into the net giving Saints the lead.

The visitors responded with a first foray into the Saints half where Colin Gillies made good ground wide on the right and picked out James Faughnan in the middle who hooked a first time effort over Thomas McCulloch's crossbar.

Saints continued to move the ball around well and, after a brief stoppage for some treatment to the injured right ankle of Thistle full-back David Knight, forced two good openings in quick succession. Ross Maitland steered a right foot effort from eighteen yards towards the bottom corner but without the power necessary to seriously trouble Paul Aiton. Shortly afterwards the keeper was beaten down to his left when Scott Maitland latched onto a Donald Campbell lay-off unfortunately Scott's well struck shot shaved the outside of the post.

Saints good early work was undone in the thirteenth minute when, seemingly under no pressure, goalkeeper Thomas McCulloch misplaced a hurried pass from the edge of his box straight to the feet of Thistle striker Mark Begg who gleefully curled the ball past Thomas and into the empty net.

Worryingly the setback severely jolted Saints confidence with passes no longer finding their man and Thistle's good pressing making life extremely difficult for the Saints midfield. Despite this Saints can count themselves extremely unfortunate to be denied a goal scoring opportunity by a bad offside decision from Referee Mr Dickinson. Ross Maitland's fifteenth minute ball over the top sent Donald Campbell spinning in behind the Thistle defence and in on goal. Donald's run appeared to be perfectly timed however Mr Dickinson, without the benefit of an assistant, blew for offside much to the frustration of the Saints bench.

Paul Carmichael's perseverance on the left won a nineteenth minute corner which Ross Maitland whipped in right footed looking for Donald Campbell on the six yard line. Donald beat Christopher McEwan in the air and flicked on to Paul Carmichael who couldn't get the necessary purchase on his header and sent his effort from four yards wide of target.

Thomas McCulloch went some way towards redeeming his previous error when he produced a good save in the twenty first minute to deny Thistle striker James Faughnan. Christopher McEwan  and Saaf El Zubaidi opened up Saints on the Thistle left with McCulloch doing well to narrow the angle on Faughnan and hold his crisply struck shot.

In an attempt to introduce some much needed craft to the midfield Manager Alex Craik swapped Donald Campbell and Paul Carmichael. The change briefly gave Saints some fresh impetus with Paul Aiton producing a good save to his left to hold a Donald Campbell shot after an overlapping run and cross from Jamie Graham on the left.

A heavy challenge on Paul Carmichael by James Gibbons gave Saints a dead ball opportunity twenty five yards out and slightly left of centre. Ross Maitland rolled the ball short to Donald Campbell who sent a good effort just wide of Paul Aiton's left hand post.

Another heavy challenge on Carmichael this time by Stuart Hunter earned Saints another free-kick. Ross Maitland lofted the ball from wide on the right level with the eighteen yard line into the box looking for the head of Paul Carmichael. Stuart Hunter headed the ball out wide where Brian Mackay chased the ball winning another free-kick when fouled by David Knight. Donald Campbell rolled the ball to Ross Maitland who, from the corner of the eighteen yard box, shot well over the crossbar.

The visitors capitalised on a bizarre free-kick award by Referee Dickinson on the right touchline midway inside the Saints half. Still complaining about the decision Saints missed several chances to clear with Colin Gillies eventually forcing his way into the box via a lucky break off Dene Cassells. With only the keeper to beat Gillies curled a delightful left foot finish past Thomas McCulloch's right hand and into the net to give Thistle a thirty sixth minute lead.

Saints rallied briefly after this second cheaply conceded goal with Donald Campbell making a good run into the box to meet a deep Scott Maitland cross from the right on the penalty spot. Donald climbed well to out-jump James Gibbons but sent his header inches wide of Paul Aiton's left hand post.

With five first half minutes remaining Paul Aiton produced the save of the match to deny Donald Campbell. Jamie Graham made a good run on the left and cut back to Donald who controlled on his right foot and from twelve yards fired a left foot shot towards the postage stamp corner which Aiton at full stretch finger tipped over his crossbar. Saints kept the pressure on from the corner kick which David McArthur headed down into a dangerous area. Stuart Hunter was first to react clearing the ball to the edge of the box where James Gibbons clattered into the back of Dene Cassells at the expense of another free-kick. Donald Campbell again tried to test Aiton but sent a tame effort straight at the Thistle keeper who despite fumbling recovered in time to gather at the second attempt ahead of Paul Carmichael and David McArthur.

An error strewn first half from Saints ended with another misplaced pass being collected by Colin Gillies who cut in from the right and curled an effort from twenty five yards over the crossbar.

Attacking the Mossfield end in the second half Saints looked eager to put a poor first half behind them and started brightly. Paul Carmichael cut in from the left and curled a forty seventh minute shot just over the junction of post and bar. Three minutes later Carmichael forced a corner on the left which Donald Campbell sent into the six yard box. Paul Aiton punched clear but only as far as David McArthur on the eighteen yard line who fired a shot through a ruck of players but just over the crossbar.

Saints came forward again on the right in the fifty first minute with Scott Maitland and David McArthur combing to win a throw-in. David took the throw and picked out Scott with his back to goal sixteen yards out. Scott's overhead kick brought another fine save from Paul Aiton diving to his left to clutch Scott's spectacular effort.

Aiton quickly launched the ball upfield where Christopher McEwan beat David McArthur rather too easily on the corner of the Saints eighteen yard box. McEwan made for the bye-line pursued by McArthur and cut back for the unmarked Mark Begg whose good left foot finish made it 3 - 1 for the visitors.

Trying to find some inspiration for his shell shocked troops Manager Alex Craik turned to his bench sending on Matthew Kelly and Dean Smith to replace Jamie Graham and Ross Maitland. While Saints were adjusting to the positional changes Thistle sent another ball over the top where Marc Maccallum had to make a vital interception to deny second half substitute Antony Mitchell.

On the hour mark a driving run by Myles McAuley opened up a shooting opportunity for the Saints midfielder. Thistle Captain Stuart Hunter blocked McAuley's shot with his chest and then brought down Myles down on the edge of the D before he could get another shot away. Donald Campbell once again took responsibility for the dead ball but couldn't find a way past the four man Thistle wall.

Saints forced their way back into the match in the sixty fifth minute when Matthew Kelly and Dean Smith linked up to create an opening for Paul Carmichael. Matthew closed down and dispossessed second half substitute Daniel Young on the half-way line and raced forward on the right. Matthew picked out Dean Smith's run into the box but the retreating Thistle defence prevented Dean from getting a shot away. Instead he found Paul Carmichael eight yards out who turned and lashed a right foot shot into the postage stamp corner giving Paul Aiton in the Thistle goal no chance.

Manager Alex Craik made his final changes before the restart replacing David McArthur and Myles McAuley with Martin Bonar and Kerr Newbigging. Matthew Kelly and Martin Bonar combined well on the right in the sixty ninth minute but from the corner of the eighteen yard line Martin took on a difficult shot which curled high over the crossbar when a cross to Paul Carmichael at the back post looked to be the better option.

Saints kept pressing forward but without the guile to unlock the stubborn Thistle defence. Two corners in quick succession from the Saints left were dropped into the six yard box by Donald Campbell but keeper Paul Aiton showed excellent handling under pressure to take the heat off his defence.

Saints had the ball in the net again in the eighty third minute when Paul Carmichael turned home a Dean Smith through ball but Mr Dickinson correctly ruled Paul to be in an offside position. A lengthy stoppage followed for treatment to Thistle full-back David Knight which contributed to the five additional minutes allowed by Mr Dickinson. Knight recovered sufficiently enough to continue and promptly picked up the only yellow card of the match for clattering into Marc Maccallum on the half-way line.

In the first of the added minutes Colin Gillies cleared a Donald Campbell shot off his own goal-line after a Matthew Kelly corner from the Saints right. This turned out to be Saints last chance of a disappointing afternoon as Motherwell Thistle played out the final minutes in relative comfort to claim the points doing their survival hopes no harm at all. Full credit to Thistle who worked hard all afternoon and took their chances well to run out deserved winners.

Saints must now lift themselves for their biggest match of the season this coming Saturday when they travel to New Douglas Park Hamilton to face the might of Colville Park in the Scottish Amateur Cup semi-final.

'Well Come

Saturday 8th April 2017
Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division
Oban Saints AFC v Motherwell Thistle AFC
Glencruitten 2
Mossfield Avenue
Oban
Argyll

Kick Off 2pm
Referee Mr Matthew Dickinson

This Saturday Saints warm up for their Scottish Amateur Cup semi-final against Colville Park when they welcome first time visitors Motherwell Thistle to Glencruitten. With three valuable Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division points at stake Saints will have to put the impending return visit to New Douglas Park to the back of their minds and concentrate fully on the task in hand against the Jags. Saints must take maximum points from this fixture if they are to keep in touch with title rivals Goldenhill, St Joseph's and East Kilbride FC Amateurs while the visitors are in desperate need of points at the other end of the table.

Premier Division new boys Motherwell Thistle secured promotion to the Scottish Amateur Football League's top flight with a third placed finish in last season's Premier Division One benefiting from Finnart's defection to the Caledonian League. The additional promotion spot behind Premier Division One Champions Drumchapel Amateurs Colts and runners up Ferguslie Star was gratefully accepted by Thistle to complete a meteoric rise through the divisions. After a shaky start to life in Premier Division One, where they lost four of their first seven matches, Thistle embarked upon a terrific run losing just one more match to clinch third spot on the last day of the season with a 2 - 1 win over Lochgilphead Red Star at the Ropework and with it a third successive promotion.

Currently in eighth place with thirteen points from thirteen games this season now looks to be all about survival for the Premier Division new boys. Thistle face an uphill battle to maintain their Premier Division status but with Saints, East Kilbride FC Amateurs and St Joseph's FP all still to play they may well yet have a significant influence on the final destination of the Premier Division trophy. Thistle's two other remaining fixtures are against fellow strugglers Ferguslie Star and Campbeltown Pupils both of which fixtures will be pivotal in the relegation battle.

Major Cup Competitions

Thistle's adventures in this season's major cup competitions were short lived where they were unlucky to be drawn against top quality opposition in the very early stages. Following a first round bye in the Scottish Amateur Cup a resounding 8 - 1 away win against Strathclyde Evangelical Churches League Premier Division title chasers Anniesland was followed up by another away draw in round three. This time the draw was particulary unkind pairing them with last season's runners up and reigning Kingdom Caledonian Amateur Football Association champions Leven United. Thistle put up an extremely good fight before losing out by the odd goal in three to Fife's top dogs. In the West of Scotland Cup after an away win against Central Scottish Amateur Football League Garrowhill Thistle and a walkover against folded Redbrae Athletic it was Central Scottish opposition again for Thistle in the third round. Unfortunately a narrow home defeat against Campsie Blackwatch Waterside of Division 1A ended Thistle's interest in the major cup competitions before the end of November.

League Cup Competitions

Thistle have reserved some of their best form for the domestic cups reaching the latter stages of both the Centenary Cup and the Jimmy Marshall Trophy. A 2 - 0  away win at East Kilbride YMCA and penalty shoot-out victories over St Joseph's FP and Duntocher Hibs put Thistle through to the quarter-finals of the Jimmy Marshall Trophy where they will face 2013 winners Hillington. In the Centenary Cup after topping group section 5 with convincing wins over Strathaven Dynamo, East Kilbride Rolls Royce, Busby and East Kilbride YMCA Thistle  reached the semi-finals with a 2 - 0 away win at Premier Division rivals Inverclyde. Unfortunately for the Motherwell men they came up against the very much in form St Joseph's FP in the semi-finals who ran out 2 - 0 winners.

Previous Encounters

Saints and Thistle first met in the Jimmy Marshall Trophy semi-final at Millburn Park, Alexandria at the tail end of last season where Saints won an entertaining encounter by three goals to nil. Ross Maitland's fourth minute opener was added to in the second half by Willie Gemmell and Dene Cassells to see Saints through to their third final in four seasons where they would eventually wrestle the trophy from holders St Joseph's FP.

When the sides met in their only previous league encounter in Motherwell last August Saints also notched three goals but unfortunately surrendered a 3 - 1 lead losing two goals in the dying minutes to allow Thistle a share of the points. Willie Gemmell's eighteenth minute opening goal was cancelled out on the hour mark by Ombeni Ruhanduka. Craig MacEwan restored Saints lead with thirteen minutes remaining and with just four minutes left on Referee Alan Smith's watch Donald Campbell successfully converted a penalty kick which should have made the points safe. Unfortunately for Saints the hosts had other ideas and refused to accept defeat. Ombeni Ruhanduka edged the hosts ahead in the bookings stakes for a foul on Marc Maccallum and during the stoppage Saints Manager replaced Myles McAuley and Craig MacEwan with Daniel Croarkin and Fraser MacFarlane. The young Saints substitutes had no time to settle as Thistle pushed forward looking for a way back into the game which they duly found in the ninetieth minute. Thistle substitute Christopher McEwan got a run on Jamie Graham beating the stand-in Saints left back on the outside and sending a low cross into the box which Saints failed to deal with allowing Ombeni Ruhanduka to lash a right foot shot past Thomas McCulloch. Saints were rocking now and switched off again immediately from the restart again allowing Christopher McEwan too much space this time to measure a diagonal ball to the left flank looking for Antony Mitchell. The Thistle man appeared suspiciously offside however Mr Smith, under scrutiny from a Scottish Football Association Referee's Assessor, waved play on allowing Mitchell to send a cross into the box where a pack of Thistle players were now waiting. Christopher McEwan continued his run into the box to join the throng and got the vital touch past the helpless Thomas McCulloch sending the home bench into raptures of joy and having the polar opposite effect on the Saints bench. There was barely any time left on the watch and Mr Smith blew for full time almost immediately after the restart leaving Saints to reflect ruefully on two dropped points. Full credit to hosts Motherwell Thistle who kept plugging away right to the end for which they deserved their share of the points.
