Last Weekend's Fixture

Saints had no fixture last weekend.

Following the first round away victory at Easthall Star Saints continue their defence of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy this Saturday with a home tie against Jamestown. The Alexandria club are currently bottom of Premier Division One with just four points from their opening seven matches. Jamestown arrived in this season's Premier Division One on the back of two successive promotions but with five defeats already on the board they have a battle on their hands to avoid a swift return to Premier Division Two. In Jamestown's favour is the number of fixtures remaining, there are 33 points still up for grabs so survival is very much in their own hands.

Despite there being only one more week until the clocks go forward this will only be Saints second home fixture of 2015. The non-availability of Glencruitten 2, means that Saints must go "back to school" with a second successive visit to the 3G Community Pitch at Oban High School. Saturday's home fixture presents a great opportunity for Saints to build on the 5 - 3 victory over fellow league title challengers Haldane United two weeks ago and get some much needed momentum into their challenge for league and cup success.

Saints and Jamestown met at the quarter-finals stage of last season's Jimmy Marshall Trophy at Argyll Park, Alexandria where Saints survived a late scare to progress to the semi-finals. Saints were leading courtesy of two goals from Craig MacEwan either side of the half time interval, however a late strike from the home side made the closing stages very nervy for the eventual tournament winners. The draw for this season's quarter-finals has paired the winners of this tie at home to Haldane United which is a mouthwatering prospect for both Clubs. For Saints it would mean one last chance to pit their wits against the Central Scottish Amateur League bound side against whom they have enjoyed a keen but friendly rivalry in recent years. For Jamestown it would mean a fiercely contested local derby with a semi-final place at stake in addition to local bragging rights. Despite Jamestown's lowly league position Saints can therefore expect a tough match which must be settled on the day with the prospect of penalty kicks if the scores are level after ninety minutes. Iain Jackson has close to a full squad available which should present one or two interesting selection dilemas for the Saints Manager.
