The much missed Argyll & Bute Cup ends a seven year absence to make a welcome return to the amateur football calendar in Lochgilphead this Saturday. Hosts Lochgilphead Red Star are the current holders having edged out then holders Oban Saints on goal difference to win the cup at Glencruitten when the tournament was last played in 2008. Always keenly contested the Argyll & Bute Cup throws up ties that the league positions of the respective clubs never could which contributes towards the unpredictability of the final outcome.

Group One, to be played on grass at the Ropework Park, contains holders Red Star, fellow Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division One side Dunoon, Red Star's local rivals Tarbert of Premier Division Two and St Mirren Under 19's.

Group Two, to be played on the all weather surface at Lochgilphead Joint Campus, contains Argyll's most successful clubs old rivals Campbeltown Pupils and Oban Saints. Also in group two are tournament debutants Dunoon Athletic of Scottish Amateur Football League Division One and Oban Athletic of the West of Scotland Amateur Football League Premier Division. Some fascinating ties are in store here as the long established clubs Pupils and Saints have never before faced either of the new boys.

The matches will last 40 minutes each and every team is guaranteed at least four games presenting respective coaches with the opportunity to give all of their players a decent amount of game time ahead of the start of the league season next Saturday. The weather forecast looks favourable so hopefully a healthy number of spectators will turn out to support what promises to be a great day of football.
