Stop/Start

Oban Saints stop/start season continued last Saturday with the late cancellation of their Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy second round match against Port Glasgow Old Boy's Union. The early indications were that the grass park at Parklea had managed to withstand the heavy rain during the week however, with the Saints squad on the mini-bus and ready to depart, word came through from Port Glasgow that Inverclyde Council had declared the surface unfit for play leading to the tie being postponed for a second time.

West of Scotland Amateur Cup

Saints final match of 2016 is an away trip to the familiar surroundings of East Kilbride. Saints have made the journey to Scotland's first new town four times already this calendar year and have yet to taste defeat. Cup wins against East Kilbride Rolls Royce and East Kilbride FC Amateurs were followed up with a league win against the Rolly and a highly creditable draw for a severely depleted Saints side against eventual Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs.

Saints opponents for this Saturday's West of Scotland Amateur Cup fourth round tie are Central Scottish Amateur Football League high fliers, and old friends, East Kilbride. With only two defeats in eighteen competitive fixtures East Kilbride are in a rich vein of form which has them sitting currently in fourth place in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division as the league's only unbeaten team besides runaway leaders Colville Park. East Kilbride's recent league inactivity due to cup commitments has seen them overtaken by Harestanes and Cambusnethan Talbot in the league race, however four games in hand leave them well placed to mount a serious challenge  in what looks to be a fascinating battle for second place behind odds-on title favourites Colville Park.

East Kilbride showed their class to take the scalp of the seemingly invincible Colville Park in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Bunrigh Trophy third round before succumbing to their first defeat of the season in the semi-finals of the same competition against the impressive Southside of Division 1A. East Kilbride's only other reverse so far came last Saturday in the fourth round of the Scottish Amateur Cup against another of Saints great friends Greenock High School Former Pupils. After a 1 - 1 draw in Greenock East Kilbride failed to capitalise on home advantage tumbling out of the cup after a goal in each half from the men from the tail o' the bank.

Saints and East Kilbride have a friendship going back many years with the South Lanarkshire boys regular pre-season visitors to Oban. Saints hold the upper hand in recent years fighting back from a 2 - 0  half time deficit to win 3 - 2 in 2015 before battling out a highly entertaining 0 - 0 draw in this year's July encounter. With a place in the fifth round of the West of Scotland Cup at stake friendships will be put aside for the afternoon where the tie must be decided. If the sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes extra time and penalty kicks will be required to decide who will progress.
