Saints brought the curtain down on a league season which started way back on the 15th of August at a sun drenched Kintyre Park, Campbeltown last Sunday. An Argyll Derby with the hosts desperate for all three points to avoid relegation was to prove a fitting end to a debut season of highs and lows for Manager Alex Craik and his charges. Not for the first time this season Saints were down to the bare bones with only eleven available players and some of those playing through the pain barrier. Work and family commitments saw Willie Gemmell, Keith Millar and Ross Maitland drop out from the squad which drew with Shawlands the previous afternoon with Donald Campbell and Jamie Graham making welcome returns. Jamie lined up at right back to make up a back four with Skipper Marc Maccallum. Scott Maitland and the Gaffer. Dene Cassells took an unusual right midfield role alongside Paul Kerr, Donald Campbell and Craig MacEwan. The remaining places had a more familiar look with Thomas McCulloch in goal and a front pairing of Dean Smith and Allan Mackay.

As was to be expected the Pupils need for the three points saw them do most of the early pressing particularly down their right hand side where the powerful running of right back John McCallum was a constant threat. Despite the early pressure the Saints back four were coping well and denied the hosts any clear sights of goal. A mistimed tackle on Keith Mitchell by Allan Mackay gave the Pupils left back a chance to launch a high ball into the Saints box. Martin McCallum sent a header back across goal which Thomas McCulloch couldn't gather at the first attempt letting the ball squirm from his grasp to Ryan McConnachie. The Pupils striker skilfully took the ball around the Saints keeper but had his shot blocked by a timely Marc Maccallum interception at the expense of a corner kick. After a brief stoppage for some treatment to Martin McCallum the Pupils winger lined up an outswinging corner from the right which he sliced horribly towards the goal and away from the assembled throng on the six yard line. Thomas McCulloch attempted to claw the ball over his crossbar but the dip and swerve beat his right hand and the head of Scott Maitland guarding the back post to nestle in the back of the net. A hugely fortuitous goal for the home side but just the slice of good fortune required when battling relegation. With their goal safely in the bag the Pupils were happy to take a more defensive approach allowing Saints to dictate the play but generally managing to keep the visitors at arms length. On the few occasions that Saints did manage to get behind the well drilled Pupils back line they were thwarted by last ditch interceptions by Shaun Grumoli who was in no mood to let anybody past. With Ross Maitland missing due to work commitments namesake Scott assumed the role of corner kick taker and sent in some good deliveries but found Pupils keeper Craig Lamont to be in good form catching or punching anything that came his way. With passions running high and some meaty challenges going in from both sides Referee John Scott was quick to produce his yellow card to try and put a lid on things. Ryan Gilchrist was first to go into the book for a late lunge on Dene Cassells where he was soon joined by Jamie Graham and Marc Maccallum for mistimed tackles on Ryan Deans and Keith Mitchell respectively. Neither keeper was seriously troubled during what remained of the first half and on the Mr Scott's whistle the players trooped off for rest and a chance to take on some much needed fluids.

Saints made a good start to the second half but again found the Pupils defence a tough nut to crack with Donald Campbell being crowded out before he could get a shot away after a quickly taken short free kick from Allan Mackay. Although they seemed content to hold onto their one goal lead the Pupils did venture forward on occasion and tested Thomas McCulloch with a header from Ryan McConnachie and and rasping twenty five yard drive from Liam Renton which McCulloch acrobatically tipped over his crossbar. Missing from the last three games due to family holiday commitments Donald Campbell provided a few glimpses of what Saints had been missing slipping in delightful passes for Craig MacEwan, who was beaten by another last ditch tackle from Shaun Grumoli, and Allan Mackay who brought out an excellent save from Craig Lamont narrowing the angle to beat down what looked like a certain farewell goal from the Saints striker. When the Saints goal did come it was from an unlikely source and in rather unfortunate circumstances for the Pupils keeper. Allan Mackay was upended on the corner of the Pupils box by Ryan Gilchrist for a seventy sixth minute free kick. Donald Campbell drilled in a low shot from the edge of the box which Lamont spilled straight to Alex Craik who bundled the ball over the line from four yards. Unsurprisingly the equaliser brought about a drastic change in approach from the home side with full backs Mitchell and McCallum quickly re-assigned to attacking duties. The Pupils also made full use of their five substitutes to freshen up their options a luxury which unfortunately was not open to Saints. With just five minutes remaining the home sides increased sense of endeavour finally bore fruit when Mitchell picked up a loose ball on the half way line and was allowed to advance unchallenged to the edge of the Saints box. The diminutive full back threaded a pass into the box for his colleague from the opposite flank John McCallum. McCallum thumped a shot off the crossbar but his momentum carried him forward allowing him to get above McCulloch and head the rebound into the unguarded net for the winning goal. The elation from the dramatic Pupils winner was understandable as was the disappointment among the depleted Saints contingent who had a deserved share of the points cruelly snatched from their grasp right at the death. Mr Scott, who handled a potentially tricky fixture well, brought proceedings to an end confirming Campbeltown Pupils place in the Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division for a third consecutive year and consigning Saints to their lowest league finish since the 2008-09 season.

Congratulations to Campbeltown Pupils on escaping the drop to Premier Division One and on giving the amateur football fans of Argyll at least two derby matches to look forward to next season.

Saints will now take a short but well earned rest before their pre-season schedule kicks off on Saturday 2nd July with the D&K Lafferty Cup Tournament.

Saints played their final home game of the 2015-16 season at Glencruitten last Saturday afternoon against first time visitors Shawlands. Despite the oppressive heat and there being nothing but pride at stake the sides produced an entertaing spectacle for the Saints faithful. Manager Alex Craik's selection options were dealt a severe blow when Dougal Graham and Craig Campbell had to call off through injury joining Martin Bonar and Myles McAuley in the treatment room. Adding to the Manager's problems were unavailable trio Donald Campbell, Jamie Graham and David McArthur resulting in yet another shuffle of the pack for the Gaffer. Ross Maitland made the switch from attack to defence slotting in at right back alongside Sipper Marc Maccallum, Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. Willie Gemmell came into the midfield alongside Paul Kerr and Paul Carmichael with Allan Mackay, making his farewell home appearance for the club, spearheading the attack flanked by Dean Smith and Craig MacEwan. Goalkeeper Thomas McCulloch completed the line-up with Keith Millar dropping to the bench where he was kept company by Manager Craik.

After a quiet opening spell Saints had the first effort on target when Paul Carmichael beat Shawlands goalkeeper and Captain Anthony Curran in the air to head a Ross Maitland corner from the right back across goal only to see full back Keiran McKay hook the ball off the line just inside the post. The visitors were content to sit in and hit Saints on the counter attack a ploy which paid off for them just after the half hour after. Dene Cassells matched a good run from Mark Watt to get on the end of a long ball out from the back eventually getting in a sliding challenge to concede a corner kick. Gavin McCracken's outswinger from the left was met by the unmarked Ross McDougall who looped a header over Thomas McCulloch and into the net to the Warriors the lead. Almost immediately after the restart Anthony Curran produced an excellent save low down to his left to deny Dean Smith an equaliser clawing away Dean's shot and getting just enough on it to send the ball agonisingly out of the reach of Allan Mackay at the far post. In the thirty fourth minute Craig MacEwan found his way through the solid Warriors defence and from the left of the box sent a cross to the back post for Paul Carmichael who made good contact with his header down into the dry Glencruitten turf and unfortunately over the crossbar. At the other end the visitors once again showed their threat on the counter attack with Thomas McCulloch having to pull off an excellent save to deny Gavin McCracken. Saints equalised just before the interval and fittingly it was Allan Mackay who made it onto the score sheet on his final home appearance. Mackay peeled off at the back post for a Ross Maitland cross from the right and cushioned a cut back to Craig MacEwan who had the ball taken away from him by the arm of central defender Billy Gracie. Referee Gordon Kelso immediately blew for a penalty kick with Mackay eager to accept the challenge from the spot. The visitors were unhappy with where Allan had placed the ball and there followed a nervous wait while Mr Kelso paced out the twelve yards to satisfy his own mind. Thankfully the delay did nothing to unsettle Allan and he calmly slotted the ball to the Curran's left leaving the big keeper rooted on his goal line. Shawlands restarted the action and Saints turned the tables on their opponents counter attacking style. Centre forward Jonathan Stephen tried a shot from distance which Thomas McCulloch saved easily. The Saints keeper sent a towering clearance from hand which Allan Mackay was quickly onto getting beyond the Shawlands back line to crack a low shot off the inside of Curran's right hand post with the ball bouncing across the face of goal before being hoofed to safety.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with the tireless running of Mark Watt keeping Marc Maccallum and Dene Cassells very much on their toes. In the fifty first minute a long Willie Gemmell throw from level with the penalty spot on the Saints right was punched clear by Anthony Curran with David McKay sending a raking pass forward looking for the run of Watt. The live wire striker turned inside Dene Cassells and sent a powerful shot on target which Thomas McCulloch did well to beat away but only as far as Mark Robertson who angled a shot past McCulloch which Paul Kerr managed to intercept on the goal line with a clearance on the half volley. Manager Alex Craik made his only change in the fifty eighth minute replacing Willie Gemmell with Keith Millar a move which also brought about a switch to a 4-4-2 formation. Paul Carmichael joined Allan Mackay in attack with Dean Smith and Craig MacEwan dropping back into midfield alongside Paul Kerr and Keith Millar. Saints needed more width to get behind the solid Shawlands defence and the instructions from the Manager were for full backs Ross Maitland and Scott Maitland to push forward at every opportunity. Scott sent over a good cross from the left in the sixty eighth minute which Paul Carmichael did well to head back to Dean Smith unfortunately Dean couldn't keep his effort on the half volley on target sending it high over the cross bar. Mr Kelso allowed the players a water break in the seventieth minute to top up their fluid levels in the warm mid afternoon sun. The Manager's tactical switch looked like it might pay dividends with Saints finding ways through the visitor's defensive shield on a number of occasions. Paul Carmichael sent a flashing left foot drive from sixteen yards just wide of the foot of Anthony Curran's left hand post. Shortly afterwards Dean Smith made a good run from right to left and sent a cut back to the six yard line where Paul Carmichael couldn't get enough power on his shot on the turn to seriously trouble Curran. Carmichael managed more power on his next effort from a Ross Maitland free kick after Dene Cassells had his run from the back halted unceremoniously by Gavin McCracken. Carmichael got in a good hook shot but once again Curran was equal to the task tipping the ball round the post for a corner kick. With ten minutes remaining Curran was again the hero for the Warriors pulling off another terrific save from Dean Smith. Ross Maitland almost capped a good afternoon's work in an unfamiliar right back role by working a quick one-two with Dean Smith to break into the Shawlands box and taking aim for the bottom corner only to see his shot blocked by a well timed sliding interception by David McKay. Having successfully blunted the Saints attack the visitors committed more men to attack for the final minutes but the Saints defence, lead manfully by inspirational Skipper Marc Maccallum, stood firm to close out the match and earn a share of the points which on the balance of chances created was a fair result.

The sound of Mr Kelso's whistle brought proceedings to a close signalling the end of Allan Mackay's final home appearance for Saints. Plans for a lap of honour from Allan had to be abandoned however when Saints Skipper and Argyll & Bute Council Groundsman Marc Maccallum refused to allow Allan to bring his van onto the field and the veteran striker couldn't face walking a complete circuit of the pitch.

Wouldn't It Be Nice To Get On With My Neighbours

Saints bring the curtain down on their 2015-16 season with an Argyll Derby against old rivals Campbeltown Pupils at Kintyre Park, Campbeltown this afternoon. While Saints have been gently winding down their Scottish Amateur League Premier Division campaign for several weeks now the Pupils have been engaged in a fascinating battle for survival at the foot of the league table with Alba Thistle. An away win yesterday at last season's Champions St Joseph's sets the Pupils up nicely for today's match where a win for the Kintyre men could be enough to secure their survival. However there is still the question of the unfulfilled fixture against Goldenhill on 28th May which will be subject to a committee decision so nothing less than a win will do for Pupils today. Saints last defeat at Kintyre Park came at the back end of the 2008-09 campaign when the teams were in remarkably similar positions. Unfortunately for Pupils the 3 - 2 win over their Argyll rivals wasn't enough the keep them in the Premier Division on that ocassion with only one win from their final three matches seeing them join Duncanrig FP in dropping into Premier Division One.

It took Pupils five seasons to fight their way back to the the top division and in the most recent league fixtures between the old rival Saints have prevailed on all three occassions. The incentive for a Pupils victory is clear but Saints desire to maintain local bragging rights will ensure a full bloodied encounter in front of what is sure to be a bumper Kintyre Park crowd.

Saints bring the curtain down on a long hard season with a double header of Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division fixtures this weekend. Sunday's trip to Kintyre to face relegation threatened Campbeltown Pupils is preceded by a home match against one of last season's promoted clubs Shawlands FP. The Warriors were highly impressive in securing promotion to the top division last season losing out on the Championship by the narrowest of margins to East Kilbride FC Amateurs. Sitting pretty at the top of the league having defeated East Kilbride in their last game of the season the Warriors were left to look on anxiously as Kilby won three games in a week to finish the season level on points with the Warriors but above them on goal difference. Despite not kicking on in quite the same manner as newly crowned Premier Division Champions Kilby the Warriors can be reasonably satisfied with their first season in the top flight having guaranteed safety from the drop with two games to spare thanks to a 4 - 0 away win at Alba Thistle on 7th May. Crucial to Shawlands' survival has been their away form with five of their seven wins coming on the road. Noteable scalps for the Warriors were home and away victories over Goldenhill and Inverclyde which finally tipped the scales in their favour allowing them to pull away from the drop zone leaving Alba Thistle and Campbeltown Pupils to sweat over which of them will join East Kilbride Rolls Royce in Premier Division One next season. Both Saints and Shawlands are already looking forward to next season and the prospect of challenging for what is sure to be a keenly contested Premier Division title race.

When the two sides met at Lochinch in October Saints produced a scintillating performance to record their biggest 2015-16 league win at the same time inflicing the Warriors heaviest defeat of the season. Four goals from Donald Campbell and one a-piece from Craig MacEwan and Dean Smith had Saints on easy street before a lapse in concentration at the back allowed Mark Watt to nip in and grab a consolation goal for the home side. That match was Lewis Cameron's final outing for Saints before his departure for Australia where he is currently turning out for Rochedale Rovers in the Brisbane Premier League. The farewell banners will also be out this Saturday at Glencruitten as Saints striker Allan Mackay makes his final home appearance for the club before hanging up his boots. Saints stalwart Allan has lead the line with distinction since breaking into the team in 2003 and will be a big loss to the club on and off the park. Winning In The Rain wishes Allan a long and happy retirement.
