Two time beaten semi-finalists Oban Saints return to the Scottish Amateur Cup trail this Saturday when they host Mauchline United in a first round tie at Glencruitten. Mauchline of the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association First Division versus Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division Oban Saints is one of twenty nine first round ties to be played across four regions with the remaining four hundred and eighty three entrants receiving byes.
Much like Saints, Saturday's opponents Mauchline United have not enjoyed the best of starts to the 2017 - 18 season. Home defeats to Troon Dundonald, Mossblown Boswell and last season's Division Two Champions Catrine leaves Mauchline without a league point and second bottom of the table. Only Winlinton Wolves lie below them with a significantly worse goal difference.
Saturday's match will be Mauchline's second cup tie of the new season and they will be hoping to fare better than their Ayrshire Cup first round exit last weekend at the hands of Second Division Largs Thistle.
Buoyed by last weekend's first victory of the league season away at East Kilbride FC Amateurs, Saints Manager Alex Craik will be looking to build on that success and secure a place in the Scottish Amateur Cup second round draw. Despite their poor start to the season opponents Mauchline are likely to provide a stiff test for a Saints line-up virtually unrecognisable to that which reached the semi-final stage in each of the last two seasons. The Ayrshire men will also view their trip to Oban as an ideal way to kick start their season with a win.
In charge of proceedings is Central Scottish Amateur Football League Referee Anthony McCann. If the two sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes a replay will take place in Mauchline next Saturday.
