The latest installment in Oban Saints Scottish Amateur Cup adventures takes them to "the crossroads of Ayrshire" and the medieval abbey town of Kilwinning where they will face Kilbride Thistle of the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Premier League.

Scottish Cup

After receiving a first round bye, Kilbride Thistle commenced their very impressive 2017-18 Scottish Amateur Cup run so far with a 3 - 0 away win at fellow Ayrshire men and Division Two table toppers Heathside. This was followed by a mightily impressive 4 - 0 home win against Saints Scottish Amateur Football League colleagues and 2015-16 Premier Division Champions East Kilbride FC Amateurs.

The fourth round saw Thistle on their travels to Loganlea United of the Stirling and District Amateur Football Association Premier Divison with the West Kilbride men returning from Addiewell with a 3 - 1 victory under their belts.

Perhaps the most eye catching of all Kilbride Thistle's impressive Scottish Amateur Cup results came four weeks ago in the fifth round when they put three without reply past Central Scottish Amateur Football League side Campsie Minerva who themselves have been in a rich vein of form and are currently challenging at the top of the Premier Division.

League

Since joining the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association in 2011 Kilbride Thistle have made rapid progress up the league ladder gaining successive promotions to lift them from Division Four to the Premier League.

The 2012-13 season saw Thistle win their first silverware when they captured the Division Three title dropping just nine points to take the title from closest rivals Netherthird.

After reaching the Premier League in 2015 the West Kilbride men produced some solid performances to achieve 7th and 5th place finishes in the next two seasons and consolidate their position in Ayrshire's top flight.

Thistle currently occupy fifth place in the twelve team Premier Division where they hope to join Hurlford and Shortlees in mounting a challenge on the supremacy of reigning Champions and perennial league winners Hurlford Thistle.

Cups

Despite their impressive showing in the Scottish Amateur Cup and their progress to the quarter finals of the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Donsport Trophy Kilbride Thistle haven't fared quite so well in the other cup competitions.

A second round exit of the Ayrshire Cup at the hands of First Division table toppers Stewarton United on 2nd September was followed seven days later by a James Scott Trophy first round penalty shoot-out defeat to Largs Thistle of the Second Division.

A disappointing run of results for the West Kilbride men was completed on their very next outing with more penalty shoot-out agony this time in the West of Scotland Amateur Cup. After finishing level at 2 - 2 after ninety minutes, a further thirty minutes of football couldn't separate Thistle and Uddingston and the Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League new boys prevailed on penalties. Thistle, however, didn't have long to wait to get their season back on track and got their Scottish Amateur Cup campaign off to a flyer two weeks later against Heathside.

Kilwinning

With facilities scarce in West Kilbride, Kilbride Thistle play the majority of their fixtures in Kilwinning or Saltcoats. Saturday's tie will take place at Kilwinning Sports Club where Saints will have to raise their game considerably from last Tuesday night's lack lustre Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy display against Lochgilphead Red Star if they are to have any chance of maintaining their interest in this season's national cup competition. Unlike almost every other cup competition in amateur football the Scottish Amateur Cup includes replays therefore a re-match will follow at Glencruitten in seven days time if the two sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes.
