Division 1B
Oban Saints v Lesmahagow

Kick Off 2.00pm
Referee Mr John Quinn

This Saturday Oban Saints faithful home support will catch the first sight of their favourites in competitive action since a Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy second round win over Port Glasgow on 6th April.

Since that wet afternoon more than four months ago Saints have departed the familiar surroundings of the Scottish Amateur Football League for a new challenge in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League.

Joining Saints in seeking to expand their horizons in arguably the best amateur football league in the country are Saturday's visitors Lesmahagow who, after two highly successful seasons in the Sunday Airdrie and Coatbridge Amateur Football League, have decided to try their hand in Saturday afternoon football.

Excellent choice of badge by the Airdrie & Coatbridge AFL

After joining the Airdrie and Coatbridge Amateur Football League in 2017 Lesmahagow took the Sunday afternoon scene by storm winning the Billy Harkness Cup and reaching the quarter finals of the Sunday equivalent of the Scottish Amateur Cup, the Scottish Amateur Football Association Sunday Trophy.

As well as their cup success Lesmahagow also began a short lived but fiercely contested rivalry with Lanarkshire Sunday top dogs Bullfrog which would see the new boys take the title holders all the way in a Premier Division title race where the Overtown men would eventually hold off their new challengers by three points.

The Gow kicked on in their second season grabbing a three trophy haul and with it the confidence to make the step up to Saturday afternoon football. The Premier League Cup was secured with a resounding 5 - 0 victory over Coatbridge Colts at the Airdrie Stadium on 29th March before a return to the same venue three weeks later saw the Premier League Amateur Trophy added to the Lesmahagow display cabinet thanks to a narrow victory over great rivals Bullfrog.

Having reached the quarter finals of the Sunday Trophy in their debut season Lesmahagow knew they were capable of making a big impression in the Sunday game's blue riband event. Impressive wins over Broadwood Clyde, CVD, Cranhill United, Eastwood Mearns and East Kilbride United took the Gow to the quarter finals for the second time where this time they squeeze past Sunday football giants Harvester in a penalty shoot-out.

Penalty kicks were required again in the semi-final at Ochilview Park where, after a 1 - 1 draw, The Gow defeated Westside 5 - 4 in the shoot-out.

The Falkirk Stadium was the venue for the final where the all conquering Castlemilk Dynamo, en-route to an incredible five trophy clean sweep, were too strong for the Gow and ran out comfortable winners.

Lesmahagow bounced back in impressive style to secure their third trophy of an excellent season with a satisfying last day of the season victory over Bullfrog. The relentless league form of the Airdrie and Coatbride Premier League's top two sides saw the destination of the league title go down to the wire and a final game winner takes all showdown. In front of a five hundred strong crowd The Gow eased the pain of their Sunday trophy final defeat with a 7 - 4 win over their great rivals to end their short time in the Sunday game on a high.

The Gow got their Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1B campaign underway last Saturday with a narrow 1 - 0 away defeat at the hands of Blantyre RGM who have been knocking on the door for promotion to the Premier Division for the past two seasons.

The visitors from Lesmahagow will provide a very stiff test for Saints as both sides go all out to make their mark in new league surroundings.Taking charge of this Saturday's 2pm home curtain raiser at Glencruitten is Mr John Quinn.

First Points On The Board

Saturday 10th August 2019
Craigneuk 0 - 1 Oban Saints
Central Scottish Amateur Football League
Division 1B
Dalziel Park
Hagen Drive
Motherwell
ML1 5RZ
Kick-off 3pm
Referee Mr. Sean Murdoch

Several spurned opportunities and a red card left Oban Saints clinging on desperately to record an opening day victory as the club made it's eagerly awaited debut in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League at Dalziel Park, Motherwell last Saturday afternoon.

Craig MacEwan bagged the honour of scoring Saints first goal in their new league set-up while Paul Carmichael has the slightly less prestigious distinction of picking up the first red card in a tight Division 1B encounter with Craigneuk.

Co-Manager Donald Campbell was on holiday leaving other half Willie Gemmell in sole charge for the club's first competitive outing of the season. Already without injured the James Ford suspended Steven MacLeod, Gemmell was dealt a further blow when work commitments forced Cammy Hill to withdraw from the travelling party on the eve of the match.

Saints lined up with Graham Douglas in goal behind a back four of Ruaridh Horne, Paul Carmichael, Captain Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. In the holding midfield roles were Myles McAuley and Matty Kelly with David Beaton, Lewis Cameron and Craig MacEwan ahead of them. Returning after a long absence to lead the line was Dean Smith.

Cammy Hill's late withdrawal forced Gemmell to take a place on the substitutes bench alongside Martin Bonar, Daniel Croarkin, Aaron McKay and Kerr Newbigging.

Saints kicked off attacking the railway line end of Dalziel Park and after an even opening spell created the first chance of the match in the seventh minute. David Beaton won a header from a Craigneuk throw-in on the left which Dean Smith was able to latch onto. Smith fed Lewis Cameron who darted into the box and cut the ball back for Craig MacEwan who unfortunately lifted his effort over the crossbar.

The hosts forced the first corner kick of the match in the eighth minute which was rolled out to Skipper Scott Thomson on the corner of the box. Thomson's cross to the back post looking for Jamie Grant was clawed behind for a second corner by Graham Douglas. Scott Thomson's delivery from the right was thumped away at the front post by Scott Maitland.

There continued to be little between the teams as Paul Carmichael headed a Lewis Cameron free-kick wide of target before Craigneuk reprised their earlier corner kick routine with Skipper Thomson this time sending a shot well wide of Graham Douglas' left hand post.

Craigneuk keeper Ralf Semrua was unable to deal with a twenty fourth minute Myles McAuley right wing cross however Lewis Cameron failed to take advantage of the chance sending the loose ball into the side net from a tight angle.

Paul Carmichael made a rampaging run forward from his central defensive position but his right foot shot from twenty five yards flew wide of Ralf Semrua's left hand post.

Semrua showed good handling to safely gather a twenty ninth minute Ruaridh Horne free-kick lofted into the Craigneuk box after Greig Williams had clattered into Matthew Kelly on the halfway line.

Two chances in as many minutes fell the way of Dean Smith who was firstly denied by a fine Ralf Semrua save on his six yard line after a good build up on the left before stabbing a thirty fourth minute Lewis Cameron pass inches wide of target.

Saints got their noses in front five minutes before the interval from a free-kick on the edge of the Craigneuk box after a promising Matthew Kelly run had been brought to a premature end by Greig Williams. The home defence couldn't deal with Lewis Cameron's delivery and Craig MacEwan pounced on the loose ball to open Saints Central Scottish Amateur Football League account.

Saints went in search of a second goal sixty seconds after the restart from a good move on the left. Matty Kelly held off his man well to flick a Scott Maitland pass into the path of Dean Smith who was once again denied by Ralf Semrua. The Saints bench were convinced Smith had been fouled in the act of getting his shot away however Referee Sean Murdoch, who had a good game, saw no infringement.

The good ending to the first half continued for Saints when Dean Murdoch halted a driving Scott Maitland run with a late tackle from behind. Lewis Cameron's delivery once again caused problems for the Craigneuk defence who were relieved to see Craig MacEwan inadvertently deflect a cushioned effort from Dene Cassells wide of target.

The half-time interval seemed to disrupt the Saints momentum and it was the home side who made the better start to the second period.

Under pressure from Kevin Totten, Graham Douglas could only punch a fiftieth minute Scott Thomson corner kick into the path of Taylor Lawrence who volleyed high over the crossbar from twelve yards.

Sixty seconds later a quick break on the right saw Dean Murdoch flash a low shot across Graham Douglas which Ruaridh Horne was happy to usher behind for a goal kick with Craig Rutherford closing in.

Saints registered their first attempt of the second half in the fifty third minute with Ralf Semrua palming a Matty Kelly shot from twenty yards into the path of David Beaton who was unable to get high enough over the bouncing ball and lifted his effort over the crossbar.

Craigneuk Skipper Scott Thomson found his way into Mr Murdoch's notebook for a late fifty fifth minute challenge on Scott Maitland and was quickly followed by Dean Smith for not retreating quickly enough at a free-kick.

Saints received a big let-off when, after relinquishing set piece duties Scott Thomson ghosted in completely unmarked to head a long straight Paul Rooney free-kick inches wide of Graham Douglas' right hand post.

With twenty minutes remaining Manager Willie Gemmell made his first change of the afternoon when young Aaron McKay replaced David Beaton on the Saints right.

Taylor Lawrence became the third miscreant to have Mr Murdoch reaching for his cards when he tumbled theatrically in the Saints box in the seventy first minute.

Graham Douglas made his first save of the afternoon in the seventy second minute when he comfortably held a thumping twenty eight yard drive from right foot of Scott Thomson.

Last season's top scorer Lewis Cameron passed up a glorious opportunity to open his account for this season when he pulled a seventy third minute shot wide of Ralf Semrua's right hand post after a patient Saints build up on the right involving Ruaridh Horne, Craig MacEwan and Aaron McKay.

The hosts made their first change with thirteen minutes remaining sending on Ryan Devine to replace Jamie Grant.

Craig MacEwan's diving back post header from a Matty Kelly right wing cross hit the side netting before a well timed sliding interception from Greig Williams stopped Aaron McKay from latching onto another good Kelly ball.

Craigneuk keeper Semrua produced an incredible eightieth minute triple save to keep his side in contention. After pushing out a Lewis Cameron shot from twenty yards Semrua was quickly back on his feet to deny firstly Matty Kelly and then Dean Smith on the rebound much to the disbelief of the Saints bench.

Saints continued to look the more likely to add to the scoring at this stage and Lewis Cameron's eighty first minute free-kick was helped on agonisingly wide of Semura's right hand post by the left boot of Craig MacEwan.

Daniel Croarkin replaced Dean Smith for the final eight minutes before an enforced personnel change saw Paul Carmichael earn the distinction of picking up Saints first Central Scottish Amateur Football League red card.

A straight ball over the top saw Taylor Lawrence winning the foot race with Carmichael and, with Graham Douglas well off his line, the big centre half elected to tug back the Craigneuk striker giving Mr Murdoch an easy decision to make.

The hosts introduced Graeme Richardson for the closing stages at the expense of Scott Thomson while Kerr Newbigging replaced Matty Kelly for Saints.

As Craigneuk tried to capitalise on their numerical advantage Greig Williams was left unmarked at the back post and the Saints defence were relieved to see the big fullback's header from a right wing corner kick hit Dean Murdoch and deflect wide of target.

The Saints defence, well marshalled throughout by Skipper Dene Cassells, survived what remained of the Craigneuk onslaught to get their Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1B campaign off to a hard fought winning start.

This coming Saturday the Glencruitten faithful will have their first glimpse of Saints in competitive action since the 6th of April when Lesmahagow visit Oban for the first time.

New Chapter

Saturday 10th August 2019
Craigneuk v Oban Saints
Central Scottish Amateur Football League
Division 1B
Dalziel Park
Hagen Drive
Motherwell
ML1 5RZ
Kick-off 3pm
Referee Mr. Sean Murdoch

An exciting new chapter for Oban Saints begins on Saturday 10th August when the D&K Lafferty (Contractors) Ltd. sponsored side make their eagerly anticipated debut in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League.

Widely considered to be the top league set-up in Scottish amateur football, the Central League has produced the winners of the Scottish Amateur Cup in six of the past ten seasons and an equal amount of West of Scotland Amateur Cup winners during the same period.

Saints have of course on many occasions faced top opposition from their new league set-up in the major cup competitions but it is hoped that the move from the Scottish Amateur Football League, the clubs home for forty two years, will see them pit their wits against the nation's elite amateur clubs on a more regular basis.

To reach the top flight of the Central Scottish Amateur Football League Saints must first successfully negotiate a path through Division 1B, already labelled by some pundits as "the group of death". Battling it out alongside Saints in what promises to be an extremely competitive division are Blantyre RGM, Bridgewater, Cambusnethan Talbot, Clydebank, Craigneuk, Garrowhill Thistle, Lesmahagow and Stedfast K.

The first of Saints sixteen Division 1B league fixtures comes this Saturday on the 3G surface at Dalziel Park, Motherwell against Wishaw based Craigneuk Amateurs. The North Lanarkshire men are beginning their third season in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League and, after two seasons spent adjusting to the League's high standard, will be looking to stake their claim for promotion to the top flight.

Following Saturday's opening fixture Saints loyal fan base, the Glencruitten faithful, will get their first glimpse of their favourites in competitive action in back to back home matches against Lesmahagow and Clydebank.

Taking charge of proceedings for this Saturday's 2pm kick off at Dalziel Park is Referee Mr Sean Murdoch.

Scottish Amateur Cup

In Wednesday's Scottish Amateur Cup first round draw Saints were one of twenty six West Region clubs to receive a bye. The three other Central Scottish Amateur Football League representatives to receive byes were Blantyre RGM, Bridgewater and Cambusnethan Talbot which, with all four clubs competing in Division 1B, gives Match Secretary Ross Stirling a few different options for his fixtures schedule on Saturday 7th September.

Player of the Year 2018 - 19

The Oban Saints Player of the Year award for 2018 - 19 went, unsurprisingly, to Lewis Cameron who also scooped the top goalscorer award. Even less of a surprise was that, when the trophy was presented on the players night out in Inverness last Saturday, nobody was sober enough to take a picture of the presentation.

Argyll & Bute Cup 2019 Preview

Oban Saints preparations for the new season suffered a further setback during the week when Inverness Athletic withdrew from this Saturday's scheduled friendly due to be played at Inverness Royal Academy. Despite the best efforts of the Saints Management team they have been unable to arrange alternative opposition at such short notice and have been left with yet another blank weekend on the eve of the new season.

Saints debut Central Scottish Amateur Football League season kicks off with a Division 1B away trip to Wishaw to face Craigneuk on Saturday 10th August followed by home games against Lesmahagow and Clydebank on the 17th and 24th respectively.

With the first team once again left kicking their heels the action starved Oban football going public will finally have something to feast their eyes upon when the club's second team, Oban Saints GG, entertain the home faithful in the Argyll & Bute Cup.

The newly formed Oban Saints GG have agreed, at short notice, to take on the mantle of tournament hosts from Lochgilphead Red Star who have done a sterling job over the past four years.

Joining Argyll teams Oban Saints GG and Lochgilphead Red Star are last season's Caledonian League Division 1A winners Milngavie Wanderers and Kilmarnock side New Farm Loch who reached the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Premier League for the first time in their short history when they clinched last season's First Division title.

Saturday's round robin tournament gets underway at 12 noon when Oban Saints GG will face Milngavie Wanderers on the all weather surface at Oban High School while New Farm Loch take on Lochgilphead Red Star at Glencruitten.

Each of the six matches will last fifty minutes allowing the respective Manager's to give a good amount of playing time to every member of their squad.

With the action switching between the High School and Glencruitten 2 there promises to be a busy day ahead for Referees Jimmy Litster and Martin Rae to whom Oban Saints GG extend their gratitude for agreeing to take part.

Monster Away Trip

Saturday 3rd August 2019
Preseason Friendly
Inverness Athletic v Oban Saints
Inverness Royal Academy
Culduthel Road
Inverness
IV2 6RE
Kick Off 1.00pm

This Saturday Oban Saints make the scenic journey up the A82, along the shores of Loch Ness for some monster spotting and then on to the Capital of the Highlands where they will face Inverness Athletic of the North Caledonian League in a preseason friendly at Inverness Royal Academy.

Established in 2016 as the brainchild of now Club Chairman Sandy Stephen, Inverness Athletic were quickly accepted as members of the North Caledonian Football Association and admitted to the North Caledonian Football League for the start of the 2016-17 season.

The newly formed club played their first ever competitive match on the 3rd of September 2016 in a logistically challenging trip to Orkney which ended in a 2 - 0 victory for the home side. Initially setting up home at Inverarnie Park in Inverness, Athletic slipped to defeats against Invergordon and Tain based St Duthus before recording their first ever win in a 10 - 0 rout of Alness United.

Just three months into their debut season Athletic were forced to find a new home when use of the facilities at Inverarnie Park was suddenly and unexpectedly withdrawn. The search took them west of the Beauly Firth to Pavilion Park, Muir of Ord where they would remain until the end of the 2018-19 season.

The change of location did nothing to improve the fortunes of the fledgling club which ended it's first season second bottom of the eight team league ahead of wooden spoon winners Alness United on goal difference only.

With Manager Tommy Wilson, who had replaced Chris Darch midway through the previous campaign, still at the helm Athletic continued to struggle to adapt to the high standard of football in the North Caledonian League and once again finished in seventh place albeit with an improved points tally.

The high point of the season for Athletic came in the Jock Mackay Cup where a resounding semi-final win over St Duthus set up a first ever cup final appearance for the Inverness men. Alas there was to be no silverware for recently installed Caretaker Manager Shane Carling who saw his temporary charges go down fighting in a 3 - 1 final defeat to Invergordon. The Cromarty Firth men were themselves denied a league and cup double and back to back league titles by Orkney who topped the league table by a single point to take the title across the water for the first time ever.

Carling's reward for guiding Athletic to their first cup final was to be handed the Manager's job on a permanent basis where he continued the club's improvement with a fifth placed finish in their third season. Eight wins and one draw earned Athletic twenty five points, four more than the previous two seasons added together, which the Inverness men will hope to surpass in the 2019-20 season ahead.

Athletic kicked off their preseason fixtures last Thursday night at a sunny Bught Park against Nairn County's under 20's. In an open game Ryan Ingram opened the scoring for Athletic before a brace from Tyler Edie edged the Nairn youngsters ahead. Michal Zaleski levelled from the penalty spot before Ryan Ingram headed home a Ross Harrison cross to restore the Athletic lead. County failed to take advantage of the game's second penalty kick and were further punished when an Athletic trialist extended the lead still further. Glen Main pulled another goal back for County in the dying minutes but Athletic held on to get their preseason off to a good start.

Saturday's match will provide a good test for both sides as the build up to the new season continues. Athletic have one further friendly arranged against Inverness Clachnacuddin under 20's but will be looking for several more before they kick off their North Caledonian League campaign with a home match against Bunillidh Thistle on Saturday 7th September.

Saints will begin their new adventure in the Central Scottish Amateur Football League on Saturday 10th August in a fixture yet to be confirmed.

While the Saints first team are pitting their wits against what promises to be a very useful Inverness Thistle side at Inverness Royal Academy, the club's second team, Oban Saints GG, will be entertaining the home faithful in the Argyll & Bute Cup.

The newly formed Oban Saints GG have agreed, at short notice, to take on the mantle of tournament hosts from Lochgilphead Red Star who have done a sterling job over the past four years.

The round robin tournament gets underway at 12 noon on the all weather surface at Oban High School when Oban Saints GG take on Lochgilphead Red Star in the first of six forty minute matches.

The action will switch between the High School and Glencruitten 2 with Referees Jimmy Litster and Martin Rae taking charge of proceedings.
