Oban Saints preparations for the new season suffered a further setback during the week when Inverness Athletic withdrew from this Saturday's scheduled friendly due to be played at Inverness Royal Academy. Despite the best efforts of the Saints Management team they have been unable to arrange alternative opposition at such short notice and have been left with yet another blank weekend on the eve of the new season.
Saints debut Central Scottish Amateur Football League season kicks off with a Division 1B away trip to Wishaw to face Craigneuk on Saturday 10th August followed by home games against Lesmahagow and Clydebank on the 17th and 24th respectively.
With the first team once again left kicking their heels the action starved Oban football going public will finally have something to feast their eyes upon when the club's second team, Oban Saints GG, entertain the home faithful in the Argyll & Bute Cup.
The newly formed Oban Saints GG have agreed, at short notice, to take on the mantle of tournament hosts from Lochgilphead Red Star who have done a sterling job over the past four years.
Joining Argyll teams Oban Saints GG and Lochgilphead Red Star are last season's Caledonian League Division 1A winners Milngavie Wanderers and Kilmarnock side New Farm Loch who reached the Ayrshire Amateur Football Association Premier League for the first time in their short history when they clinched last season's First Division title.
Saturday's round robin tournament gets underway at 12 noon when Oban Saints GG will face Milngavie Wanderers on the all weather surface at Oban High School while New Farm Loch take on Lochgilphead Red Star at Glencruitten.
Each of the six matches will last fifty minutes allowing the respective Manager's to give a good amount of playing time to every member of their squad.
With the action switching between the High School and Glencruitten 2 there promises to be a busy day ahead for Referees Jimmy Litster and Martin Rae to whom Oban Saints GG extend their gratitude for agreeing to take part.
