After home ties in rounds one and two Oban Saints take to the road this Saturday for an extremely difficult Scottish Amateur Cup third round tie against Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1A high fliers Falkirk Community.

Formerly Polmont and then Polmont Community, Saturday's opposition left the Stirling and District Amateur Football League for the Central Scottish Amateur Football League at the end of last season. Prior to the start of the 2017-18 season a deal was struck for a re-branding as Falkirk Community and for the club to take on the mantle of the amateur representatives of Falkirk FC which the club were naturally delighted to accept.

The Bairns currently occupy second top spot in the extremely competitive Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1A with fourteen points from their opening seven fixtures. Only two time East of Scotland Amateur Cup winners Steins Thistle have managed to take maximum points from the Bairns with wins against Mill United, Clydebank, Stirling City and league leaders Uddingston Anvil keeping them very much in the promotion hunt at this early stage in the league season.

In their domestic cup ties so far Falkirk have already exited the Cinema Cup losing out in a seven goal thriller at home to Division 1A Blantyre RGM. Their League Cup hopes also look to be hanging by a thread after Group Section Two defeats to Steins Thistle, Gartcosh United and Premier Division Eastfield.

In the major cup competitions the Bairns have safely negotiated the regional Scottish Amateur ties to book their place in the third round. After narrowly squeezing past Lothian and Edinburgh Championship side Musselburgh Windsor Falkirk had a considerably easier time in the second round away at Edina Hibs. The LEAFA Intermediate League (the lowest of the five divisions) outfit were no match for the Bairns who ran out comfortable 9 - 0 winners in Edinburgh.

It was also Lothian and Edinburgh Intermediate League opposition for Falkirk in the East of Scotland Amateur Cup. Following a first round bye Sporting Saughton were comfortably dispatched 10 - 0 at the Falkirk Community Stadium.

With Falkirk FC playing at home on Saturday, and preferred second home Stenhousemuir's Ochilview Park also unavailabe, home side Falkirk have been working hard to locate an alternative venue. The Bairns eventually settled on the 3G surface at Alva Academy which, although presenting the home side with a one hour plus round trip, at least ensures that the tie will go ahead on the scheduled date.

Saints Manager Alex Craik, like so many of his contemporaries, faces the usual mix of availability issues which should preserve his unenviable record of fielding a different starting eleven in every match so far this season.

Unlike almost every other cup competition in amateur football the Scottish Amateur Cup includes replays therefore a replay at Glencruitten will follow in seven days time if the two sides cannot be separated after ninety minutes.
