Division 1B
Oban Saints 9 - 0 ClydebankAFC

Kick Off 2.00pm
Referee Mr Tom Cavanagh

After labouring somewhat in their first two Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1B fixtures Oban Saints finally clicked into gear against Clydebank AFC at Glencruitten last Saturday afternoon.

Keeping up a high tempo from the first whistle Saints gave their goal difference a substantial boost rattling in nine goals without reply in a polished all round performance which kept the Glencruitten faithful richly entertained throughout the ninety minutes.

Already without the unavailable Myles McAuley, Saints Management duo of Donald Campbell and Willie Gemmell were dealt a further blow when Dean Smith was forced to withdraw from the squad at the eleventh hour.

The late changes meant places on the substitutes bench for both Co-managers alongside Daniel Croarkin, James Ford and Ross Maitland.

Saints lined up with Graham Douglas in goal behind a back four of Ruaridh Horne, Paul Carmichael, Captain Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland. Kerr Newbigging got the nod to partner Matty Kelly in the holding midfield role behind the more advanced triumvirate of David Beaton, Lewis Cameron and Craig MacEwan. Spearheading the attack was Cammy Hill.

Saints kicked off attacking the railway line end and were immediately on the attack with Clydebank keeper Andrew Cameron, who despite the scoreline had a good game, making a smart save low to his left to deny Matty Kelly on the end of a Lewis Cameron through ball.

A second minute overlapping run and low left wing cross from Scott Maitland was nicked away from Craig MacEwan inside the six yard box by Jay Malarkey at the expense of a corner kick which Kevin Stanley headed away at the front post.

Craig MacEwan and Lewis Cameron combined to good effect on the left to set up Cammy Hill for a close range fourth minute effort which the young striker stabbed narrowly wide of Andrew Cameron's left hand post.

Hill was off target again sixty seconds later from a David Beaton cutback as the Saints pressure continued to build.

The visitors had their first foray into Saints territory after six minutes but Barry O'Donnell's long free-kick into the box was comfortably plucked out of the air by Graham Douglas.

The early Saints pressure eventually paid off when Lewis Cameron slipped Cammy Hill through on goal with the big striker side footing a low finish into the net past the advancing Andrew Cameron.

After hooking a twenty yard effort over the crossbar, David Beaton doubled Saints advantage in the fourteenth minute reacting quickly to tuck away the loose ball after a Craig MacEwan shot had been blocked by Darren Murray.

Cammy Hill outpaced the Bankies defence to reach a twenty second minute Kerr Newbigging flick-on and take Saints goal tally to three. Hill kept his composure to round the exposed Andrew Cameron before tapping home a composed left foot finish from close range.

Bankies left wing back Ian Huggan had his name taken by Referee Tom Cavanagh for a trip on David Beaton before Kerr Newbigging narrowly escaped a similar fate for a late challenge on Kevin Stanley midway inside the Bankies half.

Andrew Cameron denied Matty Kelly for a second time gathering at the second attempt after parrying Kelly's sweetly struck thirty first minute shot after a good right wing build up from David Beaton and Ruaridh Horne.

A mistimed Ian Huggan sliding challenge on Cammy Hill inside the Bankies box gave Referee Tom Cavanagh an easy decision to make in awarding Saints a thirty eighth minute penalty kick. Andrew Cameron got down well to his left to push away Lewis Cameron's spot kick and was quickly up on his feet to save Cameron's second effort on the rebound and complete an excellent double save.

A forty second minute driving run through the inside left channel from Craig MacEwan had the Bankies defence on the back foot. MacEwan's pass inside found Cammy Hill who in turn picked out Lewis Cameron for a shot on goal. Cameron's effort was blocked and sent wide of target however Matty Kelly kept the move alive and cut the ball back from the left for Craig MacEwan to lift over Andrew Cameron for Saints fourth goal.

A rare breakaway on the right from Clydebank's Jamie Pollock was snuffed out when Kerr Newbigging, who had a good game in front of the back four, got back to help Captain Dene Cassells see out the danger before Referee Tom Cavanagh sounded the half-time whistle.

The Bankies made a change for the start of the second half replacing Ian Huggan on the left with Kieran McLeod.

McLeod had a chance to utilise his long throw after David Beaton had stood up well to block McLeod's attempted cross from the left. Graham Douglas was able to safely gather the long throw into the six yard box before launching a swift Saints counter attack on the right. Ruaridh Horne's run had the Bankie's defence backpedalling and his cross to the back post picked out Craig MacEwan. MacEwan's Bergkampesque exquisite first touch to control Horne's cross took him away from the advancing Andrew Cameron and opened up the space for him to roll the ball into the empty net for a wonderful goal that will linger long in the memories of the Glencruitten faithful.

David Beaton's tightening hamstring saw him withdrawn as a precautionary measure in the fifty first minute to be replaced by James Ford.

Bankies Skipper Kevin Stanley did well to cut out a Lewis Cameron cross intended for Cammy Hill after another good move on the left involving Cameron, Scott Maitland and Craig MacEwan.

Despite Saints domination of proceedings Clydebank kept battling away gamely and came close to notching a consolation goal in the fifty seventh minute. Dene Cassells, who was once again in commanding form at the heart of the Saints defence, was robbed playing out from the back by Barry O'Donnell. O'Donnell was able to thread the ball through for the run of Jamie Pollock who was denied by an excellent save from Graham Douglas to keep his highly prized clean sheet intact.

In Saints second change Kerr Newbigging made way for Daniel Croarkin in a straight swap in front of the back four after fifty eight minutes.

Last season's top scorer Lewis Cameron made up for his earlier penalty miss notching Saints sixth goal on the half hour mark. Matty Kelly provided his second assist of the afternoon picking out Cameron for a crisply struck shot across his namesake in the Bankies goal which nestled neatly in the bottom corner of the net.

This was the cue for Ross Maitland, who has been in impressive form with Saints second team, to make his return to the first eleven. After ripping his boots in training during the week, and learning of his recall to the first team, a frantic search for new boots for Maitland's dainty feet had ensued. With Oban Sports Shop unable to help, and no branches of Mothercare locally, a pair of boots had to be borrowed from Under 13's striker Zander Craik.

Also making a return after a long absence was Co-manager Donald Campbell who has been out of action since being stretchered off during last season's West of Scotland Cup semi-final. Campbell took Cammy Hill's place up front for the final twenty five minutes.

James Ford curled a left foot effort wide of Andrew Cameron's right hand post before Donald Campbell added a seventh goal in the eightieth minute. Campbell read the bounce of the spinning ball perfectly after a Matty Kelly shot had been partially blocked and volleyed past the helpless Andrew Cameron from close range.

Saints were almost caught cold from the restart with Scott Maitland having to scurry hastily back and make a vital interception to cut out a clever ball over the top for the run of Jamie Pollock.

Young Zander Craik's boots certainly did the trick for Ross Maitland as the evergreen wide man latched onto an eighty second minute Donald Campbell through ball to slam home goal number eight.

Maitland, who has been turning on the style for Saints since before some of the current crop of players were born, thumped home another excellent twenty two yard finish taking Saints goal tally to nine in the eighty seventh minute.

Mr Cavanagh, who handled the match well, denied Ross Maitland a hat-trick giving the benefit of an extremely tight ninetieth minute offside call to the visitors before bringing proceedings to a close after a minimal amount of added time.

This coming Saturday Saints take their 100% league record to Scotstoun Sports Campus where they will face Stedfast K who finished last season's Division 1A in fourth place just one point short of a place in the play-off's for promotion to the Premier Division.

Division 1B

Kick Off 2.00pm
Referee Mr Tom Cavanagh

Oban Saints will look to make it three wins in a row when they welcome Clydebank to Glencruitten this Saturday. Following narrow victories over Craigneuk and fellow league new boys Lesmahagow, Saints will now pit their wits against more seasoned Central Scottish Amateur Football League campaigners Clydebank.

Like Saints the Bankies also have two wins from their first two league fixtures, both of which came on the grass surface of the John Brown playing fields in Clydebank.

In their opening fixture of the Division 1B campaign the Bankies battled to a 2 - 0 victory over Garrowhill Thistle who finished last season's Division 1B in fifth place.

Last Saturday it was the turn of Craigneuk to visit John Brown's where the home side recorded a convincing 3 - 0 victory keeping intact their 100 percent league record with the added bonus of a second consecutive clean sheet.

In between their two league victories the Bankies suffered a heavy reverse in the Bunrigh League Cup at the hands of newly promoted to the Premier Division Drumchapel Utd PYM. At Drumchapel's Glenhead pitch the Bankies fell two goals behind before being handed a penalty kick lifeline. Unfortunately the spot kick was missed and last season's Division 1A runners-up took full advantage of the let-off to run in three more goals for a resounding 5 - 0 win.

Clydebank AFC's Central Scottish Amateur Football League finishes:-

2015 - 16 Division 1A 5th
2016 - 17 Division 1A 7th
2017 - 18 Division 1A 7th
2019 - 19 Division 1A 6th

Clydebank AFC's Scottish Amateur Football League finishes:-

2011 - 12 Premier Division 2 10th
2012 - 14 Premier Division 2 7th
2013 - 14 Premier Division 2 7th
2014 - 15 Pemier Division 2 7th

The Bankies will be a stiff test for a Saints side yet to hit full stride following their disastrous preseason where every single fixture has to be cancelled. Taking charge of proceedings for Saturday's 2pm kick-off at Glencruitten is experienced whistler Mr Tom Cavanagh.

Division 1B
Oban Saints 2 - 1 Lesmahagow

Kick Off 2.00pm
Referee Mr John Quinn

Goals early in each half gave Oban Saints the edge over visitors Lesmahagow when the D&K Lafferty Contractors sponsored side made their first home appearance of the season at Glencruitten last Saturday.

In an evenly contested Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1B encounter strikes from David Beaton and Lewis Cameron had Saints two goals to the good before a fifty ninth minute reply from James McGill set up a nervy closing third of the match for the Glencruitten faithful who were relieved to see their favourites cling on to claim the points.

Saints made two changes to the squad which had defeated Craigneuk seven days earlier adding James Ford and Cammy Hill at the expense of Martin Bonar and Willie Gemmell.

Lining up in goal behind an unchanged back four of Ruaridh Horne, Paul Carmichael, Captain Dene Cassells and Scott Maitland was Saints number one Graham Douglas. Myles McAuley and Matthew Kelly retained the holding midfield roles behind the further advanced three of David Beaton, Lewis Cameron and Craig MacEwan. In the only change to the previous week's starting eleven Cammy Hill was handed the number nine shirt in preference to Dean Smith who dropped to the bench. Keeping Smith company on the bench were Daniel Croarkin, James Ford, Aaron McKay and Kerr Newbigging.

Saints kicked off attacking the railway line end and were immediately on the attack with Lewis Cameron forcing a corner kick on the Saints left. Captain Dene Cassells climbed highest to meet Cameron's delivery on the six yard line but his glancing header flew wide of target.

Getting the first glimpse of their favourites in competitive action since 6th April the Glencruitten faithful didn't have too long to wait to savour the first home goal of the season when David Beaton's second minute diagonal run from the left was expertly picked out by Craig MacEwan. Beaton held off the attentions of Dean McLean and, with the outside of his right boot, lifted the ball over the advancing keeper Christopher Shaw and into the net to give Saints an early lead.

Beaton and Shaw were in direct opposition again two minutes later when Beaton collected a Matty Kelly pass and fired off a shot from sixteen yards which Shaw did well to push behind for a corner kick. Lewis Cameron again sent in a good delivery which Paul Carmichael at the back post sent crashing over the crossbar.

On the quarter hour mark Saints Skipper Dene Cassells headed out a long ball out from the Lesmahagow defence giving opposite number Johnny Logan a chance to wind up his prodigious long throw. The Saints defence coped well with the danger and launched a swift counter attack up the left wing from where Craig MacEwan's diving header on the end of a Scott Maitland cross was well held by Christopher Shaw diving low to his left.

Two minutes later Saints good start was almost undone from another long throw-in. Central defender Darren Smith demonstrated that Johnny Logan doesn't have the monopoly on the long throws and launched a looping delivery from the left deep into the Saints box. Shaun Malone's run wasn't tracked and his free header bounced back off the far post before being thumped clear by Scott Maitland.

Referee John Quinn controversially denied Saints what appeared to be a clear eighteenth minute penalty kick when Lewis Cameron was tripped inside the Lesmahagow box. To the bemusement of all, instead of pointing to the penalty spot, Mr Quinn gave the decision in favour of the visitors and cautioned Cameron for simulation.

The visitors were becoming more of a force in the game and Graham Douglas in the Saints goal did well to push a fierce James McCrorie left foot strike behind for a twenty first minute corner kick. The Saints defence struggled to get Johnny Logan's delivery from the right fully cleared and were relieved to see McCrorie's dangerous ball across the six yard box fizz behind with no takers.

Craig MacEwan sent a low shot wide of target in the twenty sixth minute before being denied a further shooting opportunity sixty seconds later. Returning to the Gow after a brief spell in the junior ranks with Cumbernauld United former club Captain Robbie Kilpatrick made a perfectly timed sliding interception in his own penalty box to prevent MacEwan from testing Christopher Shaw.

For the second time in the match Referee Quinn left the Saints Management team of Donald Campbell and Willie Gemmell perplexed at the lack of a penalty kick award after David Beaton received a blatant shove in the back in the twenty eighth minute.

Mr Quinn gave the benefit of a tight thirty second minute offside decision to the visitors when Shaun Malone raced onto a long ball over the top however Myles McAuley, who had a good afternoon patrolling in front of the back four, was alive to the situation and got back to snuff out the danger.

Lewis Cameron and Cammy Hill combined well on the right wing for Cameron to send a cutback fractionally behind the supporting run of Matty Kelly who dragged his shot high and wide of target before Cameron sent another effort over the Gow crossbar after a good turn on the edge of the box.

The visitors were forced into an early change when Shaun Malone limped off seven minutes before the interval to be replaced by Kieran Laing.

Lesmahagow hit the woodwork for the second time just before the half time whistle when the unmarked James McCrorie headed a James McGill cross onto the inside of Graham Douglas' left hand post and back into the arms of the grateful keeper.

Saints started the second half in the same fashion as the first with a goal after two minutes. A quick release of the ball from Graham Douglas after he had safely gathered a Darren Smith long throw sent Cammy Hill away on the left only for the young striker to be upended midway inside opposition territory by Gow fullback Gordon Hamilton. Lewis Cameron's free-kick rolled up to the edge of the box was taken towards the byeline by Craig MacEwan. There was no way through for MacEwan but his lay-off to David Beaton was cut back to Lewis Cameron on the edge of the box whose low shot through a sea of legs deceived Christopher Shaw and nestled in the bottom corner.

Referee Quinn allowed a suspiciously offside James McGinn to continue his fifty ninth minute run on the right with Dene Cassells eventually getting back to concede a corner kick. From Johnny Logan's delivery the Saints defence left McGinn and Robbie Kilpatrick completely unmarked at the back post and were punished accordingly when Kilpatrick took the ball down for McGinn to poke the ball home from five yards out.

Saints responded with a David Beaton shot from the corner of the box which warmed the palms of Christopher Shaw before the Gow keeper pulled off an excellent save from Lewis Cameron. After being felled twenty four yards out Cameron picked himself up and sent a dipping effort up and over the four man wall which Shaw, at full stretch, finger tipped over the crossbar.

Cameron kept the pressure on the Gow defence with a succession of corner kicks which finally came to an end when Paul Carmichael headed wide of target at the back post.

Saints made a double substitution in the sixty sixth minute sending on James Ford and Dean Smith as direct replacements for David Beaton and Cammy Hill.

The game, which for the most part had been played in a competitive but fair spirit, erupted momentarily in the eightieth minute however Mr Quinn very quickly restored order and once the dust had settled issued yellow cards to team Captains Dene Cassells and Johnny Logan.

Saints made further changes replacing Matty Kelly with the fresh legs of Daniel Croarkin and withdrawing Lewis Cameron in favour of the added aerial presence of Kerr Newbigging.

Lesmahagow also made a change for the final five minutes taking off goal scorer James McGinn and replacing him with Derrin Mackenzie.

The visitors stepped up their aerial bombardment for the closing stages but the Saints rearguard stood firm under pressure protecting keeper Graham Douglas well.

Saints had one final chance to take the pressure off the hard worked defence with an eighty eighth minute breakaway on the left. Craig MacEwan raced into the box and, after rounding Christopher Shaw, saw his effort from a tight angle cleared off the line by Robbie Kilpatrick.

Dean Smith picked up a ninety first minute yellow card for a badly mistimed tackle on the halfway line giving the visitors another chance to lump the ball into the Saints box. Once again it was a Saints head meeting the ball and the danger was safely repelled.

Mr Quinn brought proceedings to a close after three added minutes confirming back to back league wins for Saints and a place among the early Division 1B pacesetters alongside Clydebank and Blantyre RGM.

Saints are at home again this coming Saturday when they welcome Clydebank to Oban on Central Scottish Amateur Football League Division 1B business. Kick off at Glencruitten is at 2pm with Mr Tom Cavanagh in charge.
